Welcome I would like to welcome everyone to the Safari Club International – Flint Regional Chapter 37th Annual Fundraiser and Wild Game Dinner. By attending tonight, you are supporting our mission to protect the freedom to hunt and promote wildlife conservation worldwide. Your support will help SCI protect our hunting heritage. Wildlife conservation, education and humanitarian programs through the years. The Flint Chapter was the recipient of several awards at the 2018 SCI Annual Convention in Reno, Nevada. Being there was a pleasure and an honor. Working hard alongside George Peterman, Mike Dickerson, Matt Bluntzer, Neal Porter and Carl Griffin making connections and getting hunt donations so we can better serve the Flint Chapter. All the hard work paid off as we bring back the coveted 2018 Top Gun Award for the second year in a row! We also received First Place Newsletter Award, Website Award and received 2nd place for Diamond Conservation and the 2018 Fundraising Publication. I am very proud of the accomplishments the Flint Chapter has made, consistently through the years. We should all be proud to be members of this chapter! To date, Flint’s contributions have totaled over $38, 000. • Sportsmen Against Hunger: A program devoted to supplying food to the underprivileged through contributions of wild game meat from hunters. This program has supported over 48,000 pounds of meat to the needy since 1998. Sportsmen Against Hunger

In 2018 SCI/Flint Sportsmen Against Hunger partnered with Michigan Sportsmen Against Hunger to help expand our reach and multiply our resources. This partnership has proven to be very beneficial to both organizations. At the time of this writing firm numbers are not available for 2018 but anecdotal information from processors indicates that venison donations are up dramatically over a year ago. This is a good news/bad news situation. The good news is yes, we are able to feed more people. The bad news is there still remain many more folks that truly need help. While we certainly continue to support the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, additionally, we have been able to impact many smaller charities that are helping to feed the hungry in their local communities. There are far more hungry in our communities than most of us realize and these local charities are having a significant impact in reaching them. On behalf of the Flint Chapter and the many hungry in our area I extend our sincere thanks to all those who donated to Sportsmen Against Hunger or helped in any way during 2018. Looking ahead I am asking for your help again in 2019 in four different ways. During the 2019 hunting season please purchase an extra doe tag and fill it for Sportsmen Against Hunger. Just take the deer to any participating processor and donate it. SAH will pay the processing and each deer will provide a meal for approximately 160 people. An updated list of processors will be available in upcoming chapter newsletters and on the chapter website. Help us spread the word! There is still a large percentage of hunters who are not aware of Sportsmen Against Hunger. I can’t tell you how many hunters commented to me this past year when I explained SAH to them “What a great idea, I will be glad to help. I wish I had known about this sooner.” Share information about SAH with your hunting buddies and encourage them to join you in buying and filling an extra tag or two. License vendors are supposed to ask people who buy hunting, fishing, ORV, trapping or antlerless license to donate $1.00 to Sportsmen Against Hunger. Unfortunately, many don’t ask. It is these dollars that pay for the processing and distribution costs of the donations. When you buy a license this year if the vendor doesn’t ask you to donate please remind them and then donate a dollar or more. Oh, and tell them why their remembering to ask hunters for a donation to SAH is so important. If you know of a deer processor in your area that may be interested in becoming a participating processor please let me know and we will take the necessary steps to help them get registered. The more processors that are available the shorter the drive for hunters to drop off a deer. Keep in mind that each processor must be inspected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) before any food bank or other food distribution charity can accept donations from them. If you have any questions or need help in supporting “Sportsmen Against Hunger” please let me know and thanks again!. Together we can make a real difference for many of our neighbors. 47th ANNUAL SCI CONVENTION The Ultimate Sportsmen Market Reno-January 9 - 12, 2019

The Safari Club International Convention, held in Reno, Nevada, was definitely one to remember. For 47 years, SCI has been FIRST FOR HUNTERS and this year’s was well attended by Flint chapter members and board members.

President Paul Babaz opened the event with a ceremonial ribbon cutting while Angela Chapman’s Exhibitor Welcoming Brigade was on the convention floor meeting and greeting all of the donors and exhibitors. SCI Flint was well represented in the brigade- Scott Chapman, Dennis Peters, Sheri Harvey, Joy Peterman, George Peterman, Carl and Jane Griffin, and Neal Porter all volunteered for service.

The best outfitters in the world exhibit at the convention and the hunter has the opportunity to plan and discuss his next adventure in great detail before booking the hunt. Unique home furnishings, clothing, optics, firearms, custom wildlife jewelry, artwork- it’s all at the convention and the quality is all world class.

Other volunteers from SCI Flint included Bruce Eavenson and Matt Bluntzer, both working on the exhibitor care floor team and Guides and Outfitters team. Scott Chapman served as Chair of the convention committee, along with many other roles. Matt

Bluntzer volunteered for duty at the Sables Luncheon event. Hunt Donor Chair for SCI Flint, Mike Dickerson, attended the convention along with his team of SCI Flint board members. They were able to add some great hunting trips to our upcoming fundraiser. Next year’s convention will be held once again at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center from January 15 to January 18, 2020. The host hotel will be the Peppermill. If you’ve never been, start making plans now to attend- every hunter needs to experience the greatest hunting celebration on earth at least once! In 2022, the convention will return to Las Vegas.

Blue Bag Travels to Guatemala

T

his past October 16 people boarded an airplane and headed to Camotan, Guatemala a town about 120 miles or a four hour drive east of the capital Guatemala City. We were there to support a group called Servant Ministries which was started by Nancy Sheldon in 1989 and is based in Michigan but works in Guatemala. Servant Ministries works to support the local people who are primarily subsistence farmers with minimal resources. Their primary agricultural crop is corn used mainly for food along with fruits and vegetables grown in each family’s garden. Since it’s beginning Servant Ministries has started new churches, medical, dental and optical clinics. Various groups travel from the U.S. periodically to Camotan to provide medical and dental care and deliver supplies to the clinics in addition to providing support for the overall ministry. This trip had three primary goals. 1. to help put a new 20ft X 20ft addition on one of the approximately 20 mountain churches Nancy has planted 2. to help provide and distribute school supply

packs for the mountain children and 3. to provide maternity packs for new mothers and babies. The addition to the church provides more seating and was built from concrete block with stucco on the interior walls topped by a tin roof. Through the help of many hands, the entire building project was completed in the seven days we were there. 2400 school packs consisting of supplies ranging from pencils and sharpeners to pens, scissors, markers and crayons and other supplies based on the ages of the children, were assembled, packed in zip-lock bags and distributed. Other groups will provide additional packs for a total of 7000 that will go to schools across the mountains. The maternity packs were composed of everyday items that we take for granted but are largely unavailable to them. Lotion and baby wash, diapers, blankets and stuffed toys were among the items.

12 | 2019 Wild Game Dinner and Fundraiser | www.sciflint.com

A number of the participants on the trip adopted children for continuing support after our departure. Some of the help is to provide improved diets. Many of the children suffer from various forms of malnutrition due to many foods either not being available or beyond the means of their family. As mentioned earlier their primary food is corn which is baked into tortillas three times a day and accompanied by some vegetables from the family garden. Our support will help them obtain additional food stuffs such as potatoes, carrots and cabbage and beans. There are so many people like those we visited that need so much and have so little. Too often they are invisible to us due to distance and a lack of awareness of their plight. The continuing work of Servant Ministries is making a significant impact on this area and it’s people. We thank SCI Flint for your support through the Blue Bag program to bring much needed help to them. Linda Hamilton, RN

MEDIA PERSON OF THE YEAR

Jenny (Olsen) Ciolek Jenny is best-known as producer and co-host of Michigan Out-of-Doors Television – the longest-running show in the state, and quite possibly the country. Along with her teammates, each week Jenny helps carry on the great tradition that Mort Neff started back in 1951 when the first episode of Michigan Outdoors aired on a Thursday night here in our Great Lakes State. Growing up on a farm in nearby Ortonville, Michigan, Jenny learned from an early age the importance of being a steward of the land, and the delicious rewards of growing and harvesting her own crops and livestock. From the time she was able, Jenny enjoyed tagging along on pheasant and deer hunts with her parents and brothers. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1992, Jenny returned home to help run the family busi-

ness – a small manufacturing facility in Fenton (not a passion, but a necessity). It wasn’t until 1999 that she found a passion that would turn into her career. She was offered the position of co-host and editor of Michigan Out-ofDoors TV, where she quickly learned how to run a camera and edit tape. In 2005, Jenny took what would be a 4-year break from Michigan Out-of-Doors and accepted a position as editor of Ted Nugent Spirit of the Wild TV Show on The Outdoor Channel. In the years that followed, she also worked as editor and camera operator for Fred & Michele Eichler’s Predator Nation, Easton Bowhunting TV, and Muzzy’s Bad to the Bone TV. Jenny also contributed to Jimmy Sites’ Spiritual Outdoor Adventures and special video projects for Michigan-based Scent-Lok. In 2009 Jenny returned to Michigan Out-of-Doors TV, and balances her time between the television show and Huron Lady Cruises – a tour boat business she owns and operates in downtown Port Huron, Michigan. In June of 2018, Mr. Matt Ciolek changed Jenny’s life…and her last name! The newlyweds share a love of the outdoors, and spend most of their free time in the woods and on the water.

Triston Cole was first elected to represent and serve the 105th District in the Michigan House of Representatives in November 2014. The district includes Antrim, Otsego, Charlevoix, Montmorency and Oscoda counties. After being re-elected in 2016, Representative Cole chaired the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee while also serving on the committees on Energy Policy, Judiciary, and Michigan Competitiveness.Cole also served as assistant Majority Floor Leader. He also took the lead on the Northern Caucus as well as Co-Chairman of the Sportsman’s Caucus. For the 2019-2020 Legislative term, Representative Cole will serve as the Majority Floor Leader for Michigan’s 100th Legislature. He serves as Vice Chairman of the committee on Government Operations. He will also serve on the committees on Transportation and House Fiscal Governing. Prior to being elected as Representative, Triston had nearly 20 years of executive experience as a member of many diverse boards and committees at the local, regional, and state levels. He served on the board of the Antrim County Farm Bureau for 12 years, two as President. He also served two years on the Michigan Farm Bureau’s State Policy Development Committee and four years on the Farm Bureau’s State Young Farmer Committee. In addition, Triston Cole displayed his leadership qualities as the Antrim County Republican Party Chairman for two years.

LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR

State Representative Triston Cole

Triston has a true affinity for nature and the outdoors. As a teen, he garnered experience as a hunting guide that would propel him into 15 years in the hunting and guiding industry. In 2000, Triston and his wife, Stacy, started a family farm from scratch. They became small-business owners whose farm over the years provided a variety of fruits, vegetables, and shiitake mushrooms for local direct market sales. The farm is now a small U-pick Fall raspberry patch. When not working the land, Triston was a truck driver with over 10 years behind the wheel of a semi, two of those years driving a fuel tanker delivering gasoline and diesel. As a hunter and outdoorsman, Triston Cole has worked hard in the Michigan House of Representatives to ensure effective and sensible policy and laws regarding outdoor recreation. Triston introduced and passed a bill that allows young hunters greater access to Michigan’s 4.5 million acres of state land to harvest deer, elk, and bear with a firearm. He also introduced a bill that freezes the DNR’s ability to issue deer sterilization permits, which promotes hunting to be used as the primary species management tool. Triston has also opened more diverse pathways to nature for all Michiganders through legislation. He introduced a bill that opened 6,300 miles of forest roads and trails to the use of ORVs and side by sides while also allowing for the recovery of harvested big game off the roads and trails to promote and ensure game recovery especially with an aging hunter population. All these bills have been signed into law by Governor Snyder and enhance the sportsman’s experience with the outdoors. Triston and his wife, Stacy, have been married for over 20 years. Triston and Stacy have three beautiful daughters together and the family enjoys hunting and fishing together. The Cole family is deeply committed to conservation and a love for the outdoors. Triston is honored to serve the people of the 105th District, as well as every other Michigander across the state.

2018 SCI Flint Veteran Hunt

My name is Christopher Werth and I had the pleasure of going on a veteran’s turkey hunt hosted by Northeast Missouri Outfitters and SCI Flint. My career as a marine was a good one, I did 4 years as a radio operator and a secondary MOS as a marksman coach. I was fortunate to meet a lot of awesome people while I served and will never forget them. It’s truly a brotherhood that will change you forever. Describing my hunt in one word would simply be, AMAZING. I had a phenomenal trip. Good food, great people, and lots a fun. This was the first time I had attempted turkey hunting, so it was all new to me. But with a little coaching from Ryan Lewis and his phenomenal team at Northwest Missouri Outfitters, I was good to go. They walked me through everything and made sure I was prepared when that monster bird came in. The morning of the hunt, Aaron Quillan, aka “the awesome guide”, and myself went out early in the morning to the blind we set up the prior day. We sat waiting as the sun came up and began to hear more and more big toms gobbling over the ridges. It was a pretty awesome few

moments and something you must experience if you’ve never hunted turkey before. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a group of hens and a couple jakes came in from the right. I decided I was going to take one of the jakes and got myself ready for the shot. Looking down shotgun scope, picking out the best one in the group, I took a deep breath and using my marksmanship skills I acquired from the Marine corps, shot my first turkey! It was awesome! After the hunt, we went back to the lodge for food, drinks and lots of laughs. The group of guys there that week were great. Very professional at their task but so personable at the same time. I couldn’t have asked for a better group and I can’t wait to go back to NEMO and hunt with my new friends. So many thanks to send out. First, Ryan Lewis, Dave Kirby, and the entire Northeast Missouri team for providing this amazing hunt and lodging. Thank you so much. Even the food was amazing! Thanks to Aaron Quillan for driving over from Monarch Rivers to help guide me on my hunt. Thank you, Mike Dickerson, for driving me down to the outfit and back. We had a lot of fun on the trip and I would do it again with you in a heartbeat. Thanks to Zach Goodheart for reaching out to me and setting this trip up, it was much needed time away and an amazing experience for my first turkey hunt. Finally, thank you to the Flint Safari Club. Without the chapter and its members, I know that none of this would have been possible. Once again thank you all for giving me the opportunity to share good times and good laughs, it really meant a lot to me and will be an experience I’ll never forget. Sincerely, Sgt. Christopher Werth Veteran, USMC

AWLS

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Dear Flint Chapter SCI, I planned for weeks for my trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I had no idea exactly what to expect. I followed the packing list as precisely as I could, managing to shove 8 days’ worth of clothing into my carry on to avoid a checked bag fee. Eager with anticipation I stepped off of the plane and into paradise. With the mountains behind me and an arch of antlers ahead of me, I embarked on this life changing journey. Marge greeted us with amazing hospitality as we entered the American Wilderness Leadership School. Thirty-six teachers from all around the country coming together with one goal in mind, our future generation. Every staff member we met was passionate for the cause and excited about the upcoming week. Breakfast was at 6:45 in the morning and our learning went well into the evening ending in the classroom at 9:00 pm every night. They managed to squeeze 85 hours of education into 6 days. We learned about survival, conservation, ecology, hunting, guns and archery. Coming into AWLS, I was actually a bit terrified of guns. Although I stand by the 2nd amendment, I never thought I would handle a gun. Well that all changed!! I left AWLS with knowledge in gun safety and experience with shotguns, rifles, and handguns. I went from never planning on shooting a gun to wanting to own one. The NASP certification program was one of my favorites. John and Laura are amazing individuals and I am pretty sure every educator left with a passion to bring the NASP program back home. Archery is a great opportunity for children to develop several lifelong skills. I am so excited to be NASP certified and I plan on using it throughout my career. When I arrived in Jackson Hole I had very little understanding of hunting. I have several family members that hunt but never had any interest or desire to do it myself. I had no idea the huge impact hunting has on conservation. I am very thankful for my new understanding of hunting and my ability to share my knowledge with students and others I come into contact with. I might even go hunting myself. All week we learned about ways to take what we were learning back to the classroom. We did activities and lesson plans that we can implement immediately. They sent us home with an 8GB flash drive packed full of educational materials to use upon arriving back home. Although I am still actively searching for a job this upcoming school year, I cannot wait to share all that I have learned with my future students. Given the opportunity, I would love to be part of an outdoor education program. The beauty in Wyoming was breathtaking and the friendships built will last a lifetime, but the knowledge and tools I left AWLS with will change the future. I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to the Flint Chapter of SCI for giving me this amazing opportunity. You will never begin to understand how much of a blessing this has been to me. I look forward to working with you in the future as we unite to educate future generation. With Deepest Gratitude, Ashlee Talaski

2019 AUCTION LIST SOME SPECIAL NOTES ON OUR HUNTS & TRIPS 1. Upgrading your hunt, while not required, is certainly appreciated by our donors. If you do not want to add another animal, consider bringing along a friend. This really helps out these outfitters and hunting companies that are trying to help us! With few exceptions, these donors are not wealthy philanthropists, but rather they donate to help wildlife, ensure the future of our sport, and generate new business for themselves. Please do what you can to help! 2. If you buy a live or silent auction hunt at our auction, that the donor fails to provide for you, through no fault of your own,we will make arrangements for a replacement hunt or we will issue you a credit for the next year’s auction. If you simply find it inconvenient to go on the dates available, or change your mind for some reason, then it is to be worked out between you and the outfitter. The buyer is responsible for communicating directly with the outfitter to confirm dates and details. 3. Different hunts include or specify different things, such as meals, lodging, transportation, weapon type, (gun, bow, or either), available dates, etc. Please read the descriptions carefully. As a general rule, hunting licenses are not included, unless on an enclosed game ranch. On Canadian hunts, there may be a Goods and Services Tax added to the selling price of the donated hunt (approximately 7%). 4 We do our best to solicit donated hunts only from competent outfitters. However, we do not guarantee the quality or success of any hunt purchased at this auction. All of this said, it is important to note that hunts purchased at our auction generally go very well, with both the donor and the buyer being well satisfied. Certain trips such as mountain hunts or spot and stalk hunts require a high level of physical fitness to maximize the opportunity for success. Other trips, such as game ranch hunts, are not physically demanding. 5. Please report the results of your donated hunt on the form included in your buyer’s packet. We really would like to know how it went. We also would like to encourage all buyers to submit photos and/or a complete story for publication in our chapter’s newsletter. 6. All sales and prizes are subject to state and federal taxes including sales tax. 7. If you are unable to attend our live auction in person and wish to place bids for live auction items, you may submit a bid online by establishing an account and providing payment information through our third party online auction representative. One of our representatives will then try to purchase your items of choice at the lowest price, but never for more than the top amount that you indicate. To place an absentee bid online, you will need to provide in advance a pre-approved credit card or other method of payment. 8. Reserved Bid: Auction Items marked with minimum bids have a reserve price. These items

will be sold only if the reserve (or minimum) price is met. The high bidder will have the first opportunity to purchase the item at the reserve price if the minimum bid is not reached. Hunt’s #20, #34 and #66. Special Notes: SCI Flint is not responsible for hunts modified from auction items as written. No hunts can be used in conjunction with any other hunts. Hunts are not to be resold.

Thank You!

Experience Georgia quail hunting as it has been done on most of the private plantations for over 150 years. If quail hunting is anything, it is driven by tradition. And for those who believe in traditions, there is only one way to hunt quail‌ from horseback and mule-drawn wagon. Quail hunting from horseback is as deeply embedded in the southern plantation psyche as grits and cornbread, and the mule-drawn wagon is an iconic symbol of the grand plantation quail hunting social experience.

Oldaker Outfitting provides deer hunts in the beautiful Pine Ridge of Sioux and Dawes County Nebraska where the population is strong and the animals are mature and healthy. Oldaker Outfitting, LLC leases and owns 35,000 privately owned acres, which gives our clients a great opportunity to see many types of trophy class bucks across many types of challenging terrain. We allow our clients or group ample opportunity to hunt where the deer population has been scouted by our guides prior to your arrival. The deer herds on our land are approximately 50% mule deer to 50% whitetail. Mule deer bucks seen on our property can range from a 130-class to 180-plus buck. Whitetail bucks range from 120-class to 170-plus bucks. All of our land has been well managed with good genetics allowing trophy class game to be seen, and harvested year after year. This is a fair chase, free ranging, wild deer hunt. Our deer are not fenced in or shot under bait traps. If you like the thrill of the chase then this is for you.

Become a Chapter Member My name is Dennis Peters, the current membership director of the SCI Flint Chapter. I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you for joining us this weekend during our chapter’s largest fundraising event. This event is planned each year not only to raise money but also engage and reconnect the fellow sportsmen. That being said, if you are not a member of the Flint SCI Chapter please find me during the show, because we need to get you signed up! Why? If you consider yourself a hunter, this is the easiest and best way to promote the sport and preserve it for future generations. Since 2000, SCI Foundation has provided $60 Million to promote science-based conservation through wildlife research, education, and humanitarian programs that prove the importance of the hunting community worldwide. Since 1979, SCI has spent nearly $400 Million on hunter advocacy and wildlife conservation As you can see, each and every member contributes to these supporting efforts to help make a global impact. I strongly encourage memberships not because it is my job but because it is my passion. We must protect the habitats and protect our freedom to hunt.
