President’s Message Greetings fellow SCI members and friends. This year has been challenging and educational for me. I just returned from Tucson, Arizona for the board of directors meeting. There is so much behind the scenes activity, that I really didn’t realize that SCI International had that much going on. This is truly a worthy organization to belong to! They are there to protect everyone of us hunters and make conservation and education top priorities throughout this world. Our Chapter, is a very important part of this total scheme. It is important to open our eyes and in a lot of cases our wallets to help them succeed! Don’t get me wrong, I am not asking you for money, just trying to point out your commitment and support helps make this happen. I am proud of our Chapter and all of our members for doing just that! Our March Fundraiser is a prime example of this. The goals for the future are to increase our Chapter memberships and expand our services to the members so you can all get top notch enjoyment and satisfaction. This is starting at the top of SCI and then onto us. Each Chapter will be responsible to pass this on to the membership. Now as you all know, we are approaching our hunting season. I just finished with our Deer Pole at Maddens and am making plans for the Buck Pole event in November. I am looking for help if you are interested, we need sponsors and donations for this big event. If you are interested contact me and I will gladly put you to work! Let’s make this event the biggest, the funnest, most talked about Buck pole together! We have a lot of great people that belong to the Flint Chapter; let’s work together and show them exactly what we can do! If you are hunting and in this area, stop by and enter your deer. If you don’t, shame on you; you are going to miss a great time! No matter what, remember when you are out hunting, safety first. We all want you to return safely! Have a safe and successful hunting season; see you at Maddens on November 15th in Davison.
Good luck and be safe. Dennis Gepfrey President of SCI Flint Chapter

August Board Meeting Major Donation to AWLS
S
afari Club International held the annual fall board meeting in Tucson, Arizona in late August. The agenda was packed with SCI, SCIF, committee and sub-committee meetings. The Flint Chapter was well represented with President Dennis Gepfrey, his wife Camille, SCI VP Scott Chapman and Regional Rep Neal Porter all in attendance. SCI has benefited greatly from a smooth transition of power in recent years. Paul Babaz became president on July 1st and this was his first Board of Directors meeting as our leader. Like his recent predecessors, Paul is very passionate about protecting the freedom to hunt. New SCI CEO Rick Parsons along with Paul presented their vision on how we will continue to be First for Hunters. Scott Chapman is the Convention Chair for next year’s event. Fellow VP Sven Lindquist, and Regional Rep Jeff Meyerl are the co-chairs. This will be the last year in Las Vegas for several years. 20192021 events will be held in Reno. The convention provides most of the funding for SCI and the committee is working hard to deliver a better event than ever before.
even had dinner with a tarantula on his chair and didn’t know it until he got up - life in the desert! SCI Flint contributed a Kimber handgun to the veterans’ breakfast during the convention. The gun will be used to generate funds for veterans hunts and events in the future. SCI Flint also made a commitment to donate $10,000 in 2017 and 2018 to fund the American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS) at Granite Creek Ranch renovations. Several projects are currently under construction including new cabins. Granite Creek runs through the property and there is a hot springs just a few miles away at the end of the road. This area is so scenic
The Annual Leadership Training Seminar preceded the Board Meeting on Thursday, August 24th and Dennis Gepfrey was in attendance. Many chapters from around the US and Canada sent incoming officers to the seminar. This seminar is a great opportunity to meet many of the employees of SCI, learn their roles, and how they support our chapter. We were also educated by the legal and accounting departments on how to operate as a chapter and minimize our risk. A dinner party was held at the SCIF Museum on Friday night. This year’s event featured a scavenger hunt. Did you know that Teddy Roosevelt took 1,100 animals on his African Safari or that a giraffe has the highest blood pressure of any mammal? You can learn this and much more at the museum. Neal Porter 4

that portions of the fly fishing movie “A River Runs Through It” was filmed on Granite Creek between the Granite Ranch and the hot springs. Cabins are available to rent in June, September and early October and there is an outfitter operating backcountry hunting camps in the area as well.
Presidents Journey to Tucson On August 22nd I headed out to Tucson for the 2017 August Board of Directors’ meeting to represent our Chapter. I had not been to Tucson and was excited to go because I wanted to visit the SCI museum as well and view all of the animals and learn more the history of SCI. Upon arriving at the resort, the view was fantastic. There were mountains all around me with a golf course sitting right in the middle of this hot desert. The weather was awesome, 97 degrees and sunny. Wednesday morning was the official start of Directors Board Meeting. We started off with a tasty breakfast and then jumped right into the Executive Committee meeting. That meeting lasted 4 hours and covered various topics within our organization. There are new programs in the works and are being implemented within the SCI and SCIF and onto our Chapters. Plans are to incorporate new ways and ideas to retain current chapter members. Every Chapter within the SCI are all having problems keeping current new members to sign up after their memberships have expired. The 25.00 special memberships are history. We are under selling our organization and loosing money daily. In order to be the # 1 hunting organization in the world, we need to continue with our mission and protect hunter’s rights. We need to be ready for the anti-hunters ! Thursday morning I attended the Guides and Outfitters meeting and then onto the Convention Committee meeting. I listened in on the strategy and future plans
to make SCI bigger and better for the Chapters and it’s members. The last meeting that day was the SCI Foundation Board of Directors meeting. This meeting covered sustainable use and wildlife conservation, education, humanitarian services, fundraising and development, and marketing and communications. All very essential and important programs for SCI and the Chapters. More details to come! Friday was a really busy day. I attended the Veteran’s Committee meeting and at that meeting our Chapter donated a pistol to help them raise money for the Veteran’s breakfast next February in Las Vegas. I attended the Membership and Chapter development meeting and then onto the Chapter President’s Forum meeting. At this meeting all of the SCI Chapter Presidents discuss any issues, ideas, suggestions or problems within the SCI. This is really each Chapter’s way to voice concerns of any kind that affect the Organization. Later that evening I attended the International Wildlife Museum Scavenger Hunt, followed by a reception and dinner. What an experience! The museum was unbelievable; so many animals in their natural settings from all over the world. I spent hours in there looking at every display and every detail. You really need to experience this in person if possible. Saturday morning at 8 am I attended my final and most important meeting of the week. We covered the Treasurers report; the Presidents and PresidentElects report and the Chief Executive reports. The meeting continued with Conservation, Humanitarian and Education reports. So much information in just 4 ½ hours. Information for our Chapters will be available soon. Finally the meeting ended. I was able to meet our new President of SCI; Paul Babaz. I at that time invited him to join us in March for our Fundraiser; we will see if he shows up!

My 25 year Dream Comes True
My
trip to South Africa started as a dream 25 years ago when I was a young teenager. As the years flew by I was not sure if I would ever get the chance to travel around the world and hunt the animals I had dreamed about. I made a list of animals I would want to hunt if I ever got the chance to go. At the top of that list was the kudu bull, one of the most beautiful animals in Africa.
“And she said yes!

Summer 2017 | www.scif lint.com
In March of 2014 my girlfriend and I went to a SCI Banquet not planning on buying any hunts, but by the end of the night we were going to South Africa. We only had a few months to get ready for the hunt I had been dreaming about for decades. We immediately started planning. I got our archery equipment ready for bigger game then what we hunt here in the Midwest. I bought every Africa bowhunting DVD I could find and we started learning the anatomy of the animals that were on our list. I was going for the kudu bull, gemsbok, and a blue wildebeest. Sarah was going for an Impala and a warthog. With only a couple months to go I decided what better place to propose then a hunting trip of a lifetime around the world.
With only a 16-hour flight away we could not have been any more excited. When you land in Johannesburg and drive to the lodge the first thing you notice is the air is a unique smell, the sound of the birds are different, and seeing warthog cross the road in front of the vehicle puts a smile on your face. Immediately after getting to the lodge our professional hunter (PH) Chris tells us to shoot our bows to make sure the sights are still good after that long flight and then we headed out hunting. That first night I was fortunate to shoot a beautiful blue wildebeest. The next few days we saw hundreds of animals come to the water to get a drink. Sarah shot a nice impala and I got a gemsbok, but still no shooter kudu. On the third day
I decided now is the time to propose. I told our PH Chris that I was going to propose and that I needed him to take pictures at lunch. I think he was more nervous than I was. So while Sarah went to wash up I put the ring on her arrow rest and when she came back I said let’s grab our bows and have Chris take some pictures of us. As I handed her the bow she saw the ring. It was great Chris was able to get some good pictures of the special moment. And she said yes! After the pictures were all taken we headed right back out to the blind. On the last day of the hunt Sarah shot a great warthog. It definitely was a hunt of a lifetime from seeing animals like giraffes to monkeys and some of the most beautiful birds we have ever seen. Before we left the lodge to start the trip home I had decided hat we are coming back in two years for the kudu bull that had eluded me all week. I guess that’s why they call them the grey ghost. Sarah and I got married and before you knew it, it was time to start getting ready for the 2016 trip. Chris, the head PH, knew how important the kudu was to me so he had multiple trail cameras up and was sending pictures to me a month out. Talk about being excited! I think I looked at those pictures every day leading up to the hunt. This trip Sarah would be hunting for a gemsbok and I would be going for the kudu. This time our PH would be Francois; he is also a diehard bow hunter. As soon as we got to the lodge we shot our bows and went right out to where the shooter kudus had been coming in to the water. We sat until dark but no kudus. Day two was windy, but we went right back to the same spot and sure enough here came the kudu bulls and cows as they closed the distance the wind picked up and the side of the blind made a flapping noise, a cow barked and the hunt was over that fast, they all ran off. The next day we saw hundreds of animals; Sarah shot a great gemsbok. On the fourth day the kudu bulls came to the water and the one we have been waiting for walked up broadside at 25yards. My release was clipped on and I was just wanting for Francois to give the go ahead. I am getting more excited by the second. Still waiting and then Francois said “we’re going to pass on this bull”. I whispered “what?”. He said again “we’re going to pass on this bull”. He whispered “now that I have seen this bull I think we should hunt the other blind. I think the other bull coming in is a better looking bull. He is wider at his first curl and his tips point out more.” So needless to say my heart sank. But I listened to our PH and we watched the kudus walk off. When we got back to the lodge that night, we stood around the fire telling all the hunting stories from that day. I think everyone thought we lost are minds for passing that bull. I just kept thinking I hope Francois knows what he is doing. The weather the next couple day was so windy we barely saw anything. So with only a couple days to go I was starting to get a little worried.
With the weather still not great, windy and overcast, we went to the blind even earlier then we had been the previous mornings. The three of us just sat and waited and then Francis said “here they come and your shooter bull is with the group of kudus”. My heart started pounding immediately and I hadn’t even seen them yet. Francois whispers to me to stand up and get ready and the bull I want is the one to the back. The bull we have been after for days is finally coming in and I could not have been more excited. He is standing at 32 yards broadside; I draw my bow back, put my sight pin right where I want it and released the arrow. It hit him right at the back of the front shoulder. He made it out of sight so we gave him some time and then we started the track and he did not go far. I was so pumped up. After two trips to South Africa I had finally got the African animal I had wanted for decades. We took lots of pictures and I could not wait to get back to the lodge to tell everyone. I am so excited to get the kudu mount back in the next few months. SCI Chapter member, Ryan Payton

Eastern Michigan Food Bank
Can you believe that it is September already and fall is coming fast? We have had a really great summer, so now onto a great hunting season. Yes, it is that time again and I am still up to my usual routine collecting food for our community and families that count on us. It has been a slow year for some reason, donations are only at 276 pounds for this year compared to our total of 1,787 in 2016. It is so important to get the calls from local authorities when a deer is hit and needs to be picked up. We respond as soon as the calls are received! Hopefully things will start picking up now that deer season is about to start again and the deer are moving. The Eastern Food Bank has expanded their business and are doing school lunch programs now and need our help even more. Once again, I am reaching out to each and every one of you to help this worthy cause. Donate whatever you can this year to help our friends, families and neighbors whenever it is possible. So far, since this program began SCI has donated over 293,571 lbs

of meat to the Food Bank. This is from all of you that donate every year and because of your generous donations, hundreds of families lives are better. It is the little things in life that we do, that make the biggest differences possible. We need to be involved anyway we can to make good things happen. It will put a smile on your face knowing that you helped a stranger and his family. So with that being said, I am reaching out to you again for your help to donate whatever you can this hunting season. 1 or 2 lbs of meat is not much to donate, but when you add all of these donations together, it adds up fast! SCI is doing our best to help our community, our neighbors and those in need as much as we can. Mark Thomas Deer Processing will assist you with your donation they are valued partners in our efforts and do a great job processing your deer the way you like it! Highly recommended and a chapter member! We need your help and thank you for your efforts. Be safe in woods and good luck this season!

with, or at least to pick their minds to sort out where you might like to hunt sometime in the future.
For those of you who have been to a SCI Convention in the past, you know what the excitement is. If you haven’t, you really won’t believe your eyes when you step on to the Show Floor for the first time.
If you are a firearms enthusiast, you will have fun talking with and looking at products from all the major producers, and dozens of custom gun makers. All in the same place, you can visit everyone from Remington to Ruger, Beretta to Rigby, Jarrett to Krieghoff, Holland & Holland to Griffin and Howe, and custom makers like Turnbull, Brown Precision and McMillan.
The 2018 Convention is named “Chase the Adventure”, and for four days, you will be able to do just that. From outfitters from around the world, to rifles, shotguns, optics, hunting clothing and gear, ammunition and archery equipment, artwork and home furnishings tailored to the hunter’s lifestyle, it is all under one roof on a show floor more than 800,000 square feet! I attended my first Convention in 1996, and from the minute I walked in the door, I knew that I would return year after year to plan future hunts, to learn about new destinations and animals that I had not thought about before, to stock up on equipment and clothing, and to see the latest in ammunition and firearms. Soon it became a place to make new friendships and reconnect with old friends. Whether you are interested in hunting in Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Western States, Texas, the Deep South, Europe, Asia or South America, there are guides and outfitters to talk to from every conceivable destination. Maybe you are thinking about your first African Safari, or maybe you are a seasoned African hunter—either way, you will find hunt providers from all corners of the African continent to make plans
Want to know the latest in bullet and ammunition technology, or to talk to a factory rep about bullet performance? You can find them all here – from Barnes to Hornady, Norma, Cutting Edge, Corbon and more. If you have an interest in wing shooting, you will find two dozen outfitters who specialize in bird hunting in North America and South America, Europe and Africa. Perhaps you have wondered about Big Game Fishing – you will find outfitters from Alaska to Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama all at the show. The list goes on – you will see spell binding taxidermy displays, the largest gathering of wild life artists in the US, knife-makers, jewelers, books and videos – all for the Hunter! Youth Deer Pole 2017 Hunting season is here already. We just finished our 7th annual youth deer pole at Maddens Lounge in Davison Mi. It was a very early and warm weekend for hunting, but I was prepared! I had a refrigerated truck ready on site to stack the deer in. Saturday morning about 9 am they started pulling in. I didn’t have the scale set up yet but it didn’t take long to get it rolling! Once we started, it was like a convoy of vehicles lined up waiting to cross my scales. We got through the morning and had a break until about 4 pm, then it started again. The deer seemed to get bigger and heavier later that afternoon. I think that we closed up about 9 pm that day; no wonder I was tired! Sunday morning we were back at it by 9 am. I had a few trucks already there waiting for me. We unloaded the deer, weighed them and stuck them in the truck. The boys and girls, along with the parents were so excited and shared their hunting stories that lead up to this point. I explained to each one of them that we would be giving out some awesome prizes this year, so they needed to come back by 8:30 that evening. They said that they would be there! By the deadline which was 8:30 pm we had 47 deer hanging from our deer pole. It took me a few minutes to get everything organized and my thoughts together. Everyone was checking the scoreboard and waiting for the results. The top deer was a 9 pt that weighed 167 lbs. The 2nd place deer was a 8 pt that weighed 167 lbs and the 3rd place deer was a 8 pt that weighed 165 lbs. They continued down to does. Everyone that entered a deer at this event also had a chance to win a custom built deer blind that was donated by our Chapter. Each person’s name was put into a hat and 1 lucky winner ticket was pulled out by the DNR officer. That blind is at home now in Holt Michigan. Congratulations

Semper Fi Veterans’ Hunt This year I had the coolest hunting experience ever. In years past I have deer hunted thinking that was the only type of exciting hunt. I would soon learn that wasn’t the case, in fact completely the opposite. Myself and another Veteran were sent down to Missouri to experience our very first turkey hunt. We were able to spend time down there at North East Missouri Outfitters where Ryan Lewis and company were excellent hosts. One of my
Mike Seymour
favorite parts about turkey hunting was getting in the blind and listening to the Toms sound off prior to day break. The first couple days we had lots of action but the Toms stayed just out of range as a hen would come out of nowhere and take the Tom in a completely opposite direction. On the last day we switched up spots and went to one of the many awesome spots NEMO has to offer. Getting in the blind early that morning we heard about 6-8 Toms around us, we thought for sure at day break we would have the shot we had patiently waited for. Turns out at dawn the Toms all went the complete opposite way of where we suspected them to go. We sat all am until about 12:00 hearing minimal to no gobbles. So Ryan decided to get a bit more aggressive with calling. Ryan decided to do a fighting purr call and as soon as he did it we received multiple responses that were about 150 yards out. We waited a few minutes and Ryan did it again and again we received instant response except this time they were about 75 yards closer. Again we waited about 2 minutes this time before calling and when we did the turkeys were about 25 yards away. From that point we let our decoy pull them the rest of the way in. I sat at the
SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL BUCKPOLE
Nate Bundy ready waiting for a shot and from the window of the blind and 6 Toms appeared. I selected the shooter and it was great eating after that. I learned right then and there that turkey hunting was awesome and soon to be one of many more. I’d like to thank the SCI Flint for sponsoring a great Veteran hunt- this memory will always be a favorite of mine. Also like to thank North East Missouri Outfitters as well for hosting such a great hunt.

“Hunting the Forbidden Island”
‘‘
My entire Niihau experience was everything I had hoped for and more.
‘‘
– By Emily Perreira
S
eventeen miles southwest of the island of Kaua’i, is an island that most visitors who come to Hawaii don’t even know exists. The 72 square-mile privately owned island is home to about 120 native Hawaiians, as well as an abundant amount of wildlife. Merino sheep, wild pigs, Aoudad, and Eland, roam in great numbers throughout the island of Niihau. You can only experience the island of Niihau through invitation or by booking a hunt with Niihau Helicopters. Niihau has always been a hunting destination that I have had in my sights. When we arrived at Niihau Helicopters office, I knew that one of my dream hunts would soon become a reality. On this hunt, I had my hopes on harvesting a merino ram with my Lady Raptor Barnett Crossbow, as well as a wild boar.
As we approached a large lake, Enoka explained that there are usually nice rams along the lake’s shore. We decided that this would be a good place to start our stalk. Within a few minutes off of the truck, it was evident that we were in major sheep country.
At the office we met Shandra, who helped coordinate the hunt, our guide Enoka, and members of the Robinson family.
After seeing lots of ewes and small rams, we saw a pair of rams fighting in the distance. After glassing them with our binoculars, Enoka told me that those were the kind of rams that we were looking for. Our stalk of the rams immediately began. We were able to get within 100 yards of them however; I knew that I needed to get closer to make an ethical shot with my crossbow. Despite our attempts, we were spotted by ewes that were in between us and the rams. After seeing us, they ran and spooked the entire herd including the rams that we were after. Although we were disappointed, Enoka reassured me that it was still early in the day and that we would have many more opportunities. We decided to head back to the vehicle and try a different area.
When the helicopter left the ground at the commuter airport, we soared over the deep blue ocean. When we began to near the “Forbidden Island,” my excitement quickly increased as my anticipation for the day ahead began to build. As we approached the island and hovered over our destination, I was immediately mesmerized by the island’s beauty and how untouched it was. Once the helicopter landed, our hunt quickly began. As we drove down the dusty dirt roads, riding on the back of an old World War II Power Wagon, we soon saw lots of game in the fields. 14
Summer 2017 | www.scif lint.com
When we arrived in a different part of the island, our stalk began once again as we saw a group of rams bedded in the distance under a tree. As we snuck closer, we quickly closed the distance between the rams and us. We continued to sneak. Enoka pointed out one of the oldest rams in the group all the way to the left. He was extremely massive and had a tight curl. Not wanting to spook them I quietly reached for my range finder. 32 yards. I slowly pulled an arrow out of my quiver and slid it into position on my crossbow. After putting my crossbow on the shooting sticks, I found the big ram in the scope. As he turned broadside, I put the 30-yard pin on his lungs. I slowly exhaled and squeezed the trigger. After running about 20 yards, I could see my ram crash into the brush in front of me. As I approached him I was immediately amazed by the amount of character he had. His horns were polished and he was unbelievably massive. Just by looking at him, I could easily tell that he was an old ram. My entire Niihau experience was everything I had hoped for and more. After shooting my ram, I was also fortunate enough to harvest a nice Niihau boar. I was so touched by the kindness and hospitality of the Niihau residents and by the amount of “Aloha Spirit” that they shared with us. Our guide Enoka was extremely knowledgeable about the land and the animals. He continued to exemplify his great patience on every stalk. Hunting on the island of Niihau was an unforgettable hunting experience and I am already looking forward to my next Niihau hunt. Special thanks to the Robinson family for allowing me to experience the beauty and adventure that their unparalleled island offers.
Hunters and Conservationists With deer season fast approaching we are sending a safety reminder for hunters to check ropes, ladders, straps and blinds for things like wasp nests prior to opening day. Now that we covered safety, make sure to take lots of pictures of your hunt! We would love to put your picture in one of our publications with an article telling the tale. Maybe it all started with an adventure up north, a father son trip, a deer you’ve been watching on your property for months, an unexpected opportunity. It is up to you to share your story and keep the thrill of hunting alive for generations to come! The only thing we ask is that you keep the pictures non-bloody for our young readers. Just a reminder all members can also enter their critters into the SCI Flint Record Book and the International Record Book.
Looking To Volunteer?!? It may seem early for some to be thinking about our annual fundraising expo in March but the SCI board is already in preparation for the 2018 show. Currently, we are looking for both men and women to help our committees. We are also looking for dedicated members to join the SCI Flint Board of Directors (We generally meet the second Tuesday of the month in Davidson). Please contact Dennis Gephrey at denny5775@yahoo.com or call Dennis Peters at 586-536-5411 if you are interested or would like to learn more.

uring my junior year of high school my dad, Jeff Douglas, told me that as a graduation present he would take me on any hunt that I wanted to go on. With so many different hunts to choose from I knew it was going to be a difficult decision, but I kept my eye out and continued to search for the perfect hunt for such a special occasion. Later that year I was working at a local SCI event and I happened to meet a hunting outfitter by the name of Matt Cates. Matt is the owner of Triple M Outfitters Unlimited out of Palm Bay Florida and he outfits hunts for alligators, Osceola wild turkeys, wild boar, and many other species throughout the year. Matt and I discussed all the various hunts he provides and after our conversation I knew deep down that I wanted to book a hunt with him and try my hand at alligator hunting.
My senior year finally rolled around and when it was time for me to make my final decision I told my dad I decided on an alligator hunt with Matt at Triple M Outfitters Unlimited. Before I knew it the two of them were on the phone working out all the details and my dream hunt was becoming a reality. July finally arrived and we found ourselves on a flight to South Florida with neither my dad nor I having any idea what we had in store for us. I would later find out that the events about to transpire over the next few days would have a positive and profound impact on both my hunting career and on the way, I would view family and friends for the rest of my life. After our flight arrived in Florida that first afternoon Matt picked us up from the airport and told us he felt very confident we would both harvest our 18

gators that same day. My dad and I both looked at each other thinking he was crazy but we continued to listen to what he had to say and began preparing for the hunt. After we settled into camp Matt took us to a swamp known to hold very large and very old alligators and after an exciting and intense hunt both my dad and I harvested 8 foot 6 inch alligators. We couldn’t believe it, 5 hours off the plane and we both killed our gators. Turns out Matt wasn’t so crazy after all! We decided on the second day of our exciting trip to hunt for hogs so Matt took us out on his airboat which glides across the swamps and wetlands with ease. Matt also brought along his good friend Larry to help with our hunt and in the end, we all had a fantastic time out in the South Florida swamps. Its amazing all the sights and sounds you encounter in that part of the country.
All the alligators, wild hogs, deer, and many different bird species create an environment so beautiful that is almost too difficult to explain. At the end of the hunt we were all successful in harvesting hogs and my dad and I got to experience something new and exciting all over again. The following day was the last day of my graduation hunt and it couldn’t have ended any better! We decided to hunt for hogs one last time and this time we used a swamp buggy to make our way though the endless miles of swamps and grasslands Matt has access to. By the end of the hunt I was fortunate enough to harvest a 230 lbs. hog which made it the perfect way to cap off a perfect hunt! In the end, my dad and I had a fantastic time with everyone from Triple M Outfitters Unlimited. Everyone there were true hunting professionals with unbelievable knowledge of the land and the animals they hunt. We were both treated like family and we knew that this wouldn’t be the last time we hunted with Matt. After we left my dad and I kept in very close contact with Matt. The following year Matt was attending our local SCI show and offered to have me return to Florida and hunt with him once again for turkeys, gators, and hogs. Two weeks later I found myself on a plane and headed south to start another adventure in the Florida swamps. When I arrived in camp I met another hunter by the name of P.J. who was there on an Osceola turkey hunt. The first morning of our hunt couldn’t have played out any better with both of us being fortunate enough to fill our tags on two beautiful gobblers. As a bonus, these were the first Osceola long-beards for the both of us and P.J. was able to finish his Wild Turkey Grand Slam as well! The next two days found the three of us hunting alligators and hogs during the day, and bobcats and coyotes at night. We were
also fortunate to be able to spend time at Matt’s mother’s house eating fantastic dinners and really becoming part of the family while sharing lots of stories and laughs. I was lucky enough to harvest a smaller management alligator and a larger seven-foot alligator by the end of my second trip with Matt in Florida, and I knew our friendship and hunting adventures wasn’t going to end there. After my first two hunts in Florida I was delighted to have the opportunity to host Matt on his very own hunt in my home state of Michigan during the spring turkey season. By the end of his stay Matt was able to harvest a beautiful Eastern wild turkey and I was delighted to help return the favor for being such a great friend and hunting partner to both my dad and me. Since then we hunted two more times together, once in Kansas where I was able to harvest my first ever coyote and Rio Grande wild turkey, and in Florida again for a third time where I was fortunate enough to harvest an ancient old 11-foot alligator and massive 250 wild hog. Every experience that I have ever had with Matt has been unbelievable, and the hunting in South Florida is fantastic. I just want to thank Matt, Brandon, Larry, and everyone else associated with Triple M Outfitters Unlimited for allowing us to become part of the family. I know that I am extremely lucky and fortunate to have experienced the things I have up to this point in my hunting career, and I hope that these experiences and friendships are just the beginning of many more to come. If you are interested in any of the hunts I mentioned in this article or would like to see everything Triple M Outfitters Unlimited has to offer you can contact Matt Cates at (321) 8632985 or you can look them up on the internet at www.triplemoutfittersunlimited.com. I
met Kevin Mattice, operator of High North Outfitting, at the SCI convention in 2015 and I knew after our long conversation that I would hunt Quebec-Labrador Caribou with him some day. Since the Quebec-Labrador Caribou hunting tags were reduced from 2 per hunter to 1 per hunter, I thought waiting a few years might produce a better chance at an exceptional bull. When Kevin emailed me in December that sport hunting would be suspended at the conclusion of the 2017 hunting season and he still had a few openings, I was immediately “all in.”
I decided to drive to Montreal for the convenience of bringing back the trophy and meat. Upon entering the hotel, I met one of my hunting partners for this hunt, Mark Hampton. Unfortunately, Mark was missing his luggage and Thompson Center Encore in .308 that he was using for an article. I knew that Mark is a handgun hunting legend, outdoor writer, GSCO Board member, and handgun hunting consultant on the SCI record book committee. I would soon learn that he is also a great hunting partner. After meeting my other 2 roommates, Curt Marks and Pete Carlson, from Minnesota and hearing that I would also be hunting with fellow SCI regional representative Herb Atkinson, this hunt was starting off great. On September 6, we flew from Montreal to Kuujjuaq and then on into camp in a 1957 De Havilland Otter with the very desirable $1 million turbo prop upgrade. We arrived in camp and met the departing, successful hunters. We spent a few minutes with George Lawrence III (grand slam right handed rifle, grand slam left handed rifle, grand slam .30/.30 lever action, grand slam 24
Summer 2017 | www.scif lint.com
muzzleloader, grand slam archery, among other major hunting accomplishments). George said the hunting seemed to be getting better and we should have numerous chances- “look them over first” was his advice. But, this hunt was different from the moment we arrived in camp. Every hunter had aspirations to take the North American 29. Mark was to 26, Pete at 24, Herb at 20, Curt at 18, and so on. This was it, most likely the last chance to harvest a QuebecLabrador Caribou in our lifetimes- there would be no ‘do overs’. Kevin opened his Lac Dufreboy camp in 1992. Over the years, he built this camp into a very comfortable and efficient operation. His cook, Dave, was the best I have ever experienced in the bush. (French Onion Soup was “to die for!”) We learned that Mark would be receiving his rifle the next day, but the luggage could not be found. Kevin had accumulated many extra items over the years and it was a group effort to dress Mark for hunting. I donated my extra rain gear and some other items, Kevin had boots and camo, Pete, Curt, and Herb donated as well.
Opening day found me paired up with Mark Hampton, and our guide Jamie Patrick for a 2 on 1 hunt. I was informed by Mark that I had won the coin toss and I had first shot. I felt slightly uncomfortable about the phantom coin toss, but knew there would be no arguing with Mark, so I graciously accepted. We left the dock first and went up the lake for 15 minutes when Jamie saw 4 caribou port side. We determined that all were cows and Jamie mentioned that sometimes the bulls bed on the starboard side island. As Jamie began to glass the island, he immediately saw a bull bedded and declared that it had very good tops-GAME ON! Jamie coasted the boat to the edge of the island as I grabbed my gun and 2 cartridges. We snuck up to a rock and I got set up. The caribou was actually on the next island and about 225 yards away. When I got the scope on him, I realized he not only had great tops, he had great EVERYTHING! Mark and Jamie agreed that this was not a bull to pass on at any time, even after only 15 minutes of hunting. However, he had bedded with a rock perfectly covering his vitals and I did not like the setup. I moved forward to the next outcropping and it gave Mark and Jamie a chance to study the situation from my old position. We had a discussion about having Jamie whistle to get him up, but I decided against it. I do not like alerting an animal when he has no knowledge of our presence. After moving a few rocks and getting a good rest, I elected to take a shot at the base of the neck. The bull tipped over at the report of my custom Pierce Engineering .300 RUM bolt action rifle and we declared that he was done. We got in the boat and began to motor over to the next island- I looked ahead and was shocked to see my bull back on his feet! After a few tense moments, another shot anchored him. I broke one of my rules by not watching him in the scope for at least 2 minutes and I was lucky we did not have to track him. When I approached the bull, he looked bigger and bigger the closer I got. He had a double shovel and is as balanced as any caribou I have ever seen in photos or otherwise, and the velvet was in perfect condition, the alianait (Inuit word pronounced ah-lee-aj-nite meaning “wonderful”) bull. We hunted the rest of the day looking for a bull for Mark, but only saw 2 small ones, a few cows with calves and 2 wolves. The other hunters arrived while we were out (Joe and Eric from Missouri, Mike “card shark” Nucci from Michiganan SCI Flint fundraiser attendee) and Joe also got a bull on day 1. The caribou were not migrating south yet and this turned out to be a difficult hunt for most, but all were eventually successful. The last 3 hunters tagged out on the last day. The Ptarmigan hunting and Lake Trout fishing were “world class.” 2-3 hours of either would flush 6-10 coveys or produce about the same number of fish. I harvested my greatest trophy so far (by score) on this hunt, but I will remember the friends I made more than any other aspect. I hope to hunt again someday with my roomies-Pete, Curt and Mark- we had so much fun. Pete took a small bull on
day 4, due to not seeing many and never looked back. Curt had a knee replacement in March and worked hard on a 3 mile stalk on day 5 to get his bull. Despite not having any of his gear and enduring a tough hunt, Mark never complained and made the most of what he had- a trait of a great hunter and a great person. Herb Atkinson took an alianait bull on the last day with 1 shot at 509 yards. Unfortunately, my bull will probably never take its rightful place in the Boone & Crocket record book. I refuse to strip the velvet and alter the animal to satisfy the measuring requirements of the B&C club. Sadly, Kevin Mattice is trying to deal with the uncertainty of a sport hunt that is ending and having invested 25 years into a camp in the high north that will be of little value now that caribou hunting has ended. He is hoping to secure another operation in Greenland for Muskox and Central Barren Ground Caribou. Wherever he lands, I highly recommend Kevin as a hard working, well prepared, and great communicating operator and Dave as the best bush camp cook ever! Postscript: I would have never met this outfitter without attending the SCI Convention in Las Vegas-the best place on earth to plan your next hunting adventure. SCI Chapter Board Member Neal Porter
