WHY EXCEL? Excellence. Student Success. Innovation. Professionalism. Integrity. These values represent the future of Sherman College of Chiropractic. By now you’re probably used to hearing me say phrases like “transformational change” and “preeminent chiropractic college.” And by now I hope you realize those aren’t simply buzzwords for us here at Sherman College. They truly describe what’s happening on campus, and it has been nothing short of magical to experience. Like any good chiropractic analogy, our changes are taking place from the inside out. We have a team of expert faculty and staff – leaders in their fields – dedicated to providing our students with the best possible classroom and clinical experiences. We have fully embraced technology, revolutionizing the delivery of the doctor of chiropractic program. We have created initiatives focused on helping our students succeed academically and thrive emotionally. We have established a business program that is unrivaled among chiropractic colleges. We have incorporated evidence-based study into our curriculum, emphasizing its importance in practice. And our “small” college, and our world, are reaping the benefits. We have more than doubled enrollment over the past five years and expect continued growth in the years to come. We are rising to the top of the chiropractic profession with continuing education programs of the highest

quality in science, philosophy and art. We are raising the profile of our institution locally by building bridges in our hometown community and contributing to the well-being of our neighbors through our on-campus Chiropractic Health Center. We are literally opening up our front doors, welcoming groups to campus thanks to the beautiful new meeting spaces in our Gelardi Student Center. Most importantly, we are fulfilling our mission by graduating doctors of chiropractic who bring the message of principled chiropractic and the valuable service of vertebral subluxation correction to the betterment of their practice members and to the advancement of our profession, our community and the world. So, what’s left? Now it’s time to build on our successes. To work harder, and smarter. To EXCEL. Won’t you join us?

#MindfulnessMonday Sherman College has recently added a labyrinth to campus near the side of the Scallon Building, where on clear days, you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. Though similar in appearance to a maze, the labyrinth leads to the center and back out the same way, with no wrong turns, and no dead ends. While the designs vary, all labyrinths have a single path leading to a center; our center features the Sherman College logo as a reminder of chiropractic philosophy.

Labyrinths offer a way of addressing the spiritual, emotional, and psychological aspects of healing. Walking a labyrinth often brings mindfulness, insight and peace.

Sherman Provides Chiropractic Care to SMC Athletes As part of its efforts to enhance community outreach and improve lives with chiropractic care, Sherman College and its neighbor Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) have a collaborative agreement where student interns and faculty members from Sherman provide chiropractic care for the benefit of SMC student athletes. Our interns now have 90 active case files for our SMC clinic. This means we see nearly 34 percent of the student-athlete population at SMC. Compared to the profession’s national utilization rate of roughly 10-12 percent annually, this is an impressive statistic, particularly since our practice there is completely based on referrals and word of mouth. We expect further growth as we continue working to make a positive impact on the lives of our local athletes.

Honor Wall Donors Recognized Near Gelardi Student Center Many donors who contributed in the past to Sherman College’s Honor Wall have inquired as to what will happen to their honor and memorial tributes. To recognize the donors who contributed to the Honor Wall, the college is recreating this particular form of donor recognition in a different format, so all those who had tiles will have them reinstated in a different way. Brick pavers have been created with the same messages and images that were on past Honor Wall tiles. The pavers are larger in size (12”x12”) than the original tiles (8”x8”), and they have been installed in front of the Gelardi Student Center. Spring 2019

Our Field of Dreams Sherman College Opens the New Gelardi Student Center

T

he dedication of the new Gelardi Student Center signals a new era of transformational change and offers a tangible reminder of Sherman College’s commitment to serving others and being a force for positive change in the community and the field of chiropractic.

For Students and the Community Sherman College of Chiropractic celebrated its commitment to Spartanburg and to principled chiropractic education during the opening of the Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center February 8 on the college’s 80-acre campus in Spartanburg, SC. About 600 guests attended, with many alumni and supporters watching via livestream on the college’s Facebook page. Aside from its clear purpose of serving Sherman College students, the Gelardi Student Center is also designed to serve the local community by providing event space for community use. “This facility strengthens Sherman College’s commitment to serving humanity and reinforces our commitment to Spartanburg,” explained Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C. “Serving others is a key component of our mission, and we are committed to becoming an even stronger positive force in our community.” Sherman College broke ground the 22,000-square foot facility in November 2017, sparking transformational change on campus and beginning the next phase of its campus master plan and ongoing capital campaign.

18 www.sherman.edu

In addition to the construction of the Gelardi Student Center, Sherman College’s ambitious campus master plan has included a complete renovation of Scallon Hall, the college’s main classroom building, and a renovation of the Olsen Building, which houses executive offices. A labyrinth was also added to campus.

Ongoing and future plans include updates to the Chiropractic Health Center, which serves 35,000 patient visits each year to Upstate South Carolina residents, and further enhancements to the campus plaza and campus drive to welcome visitors, open up green spaces, and showcase the college’s 80-acre campus.

What’s In a Name? “Colleges are living things. They have a non-material soul; their reason for being. A college’s reason for being is the standard of value for everything it does. Sherman College exists to teach a competent and affordable vertebral subluxation adjusting service AND to bring that service to as many people as possible.” – Dr. Thomas A. Gelardi Sherman College Founder

Cordero said the college’s expansion plan is designed to meet the demand for skilled, passionate and successful doctors of chiropractic as the profession continues to grow, with increasing numbers of consumers seeking less invasive and more proactive approaches for healthcare.

The Gelardi Student Center is named in honor of Thom Gelardi, D.C., who founded Sherman College in 1973, and his wife, Betty Gelardi, D.C., ’76, a member of the college’s first graduating class. Thom Gelardi boldly opened the doors of Sherman College of Chiropractic to meet a great need in the chiropractic profession. This need, as he saw it, was for a new college that would provide a top quality chiropractic education while remaining consistent with the profession’s principles, goals and objectives. In founding Sherman College, Gelardi sought to promote and preserve the philosophy of chiropractic; he envisioned an environment where chiropractic could be studied, advanced, taught and then shared worldwide for the ultimate good of humanity. Sherman College carries on that purpose today.

Dedicated to Students It is fitting that the purpose of the building named in honor of Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi is primarily to serve the needs of students. After all, Gelardi noted in his remarks during the Gelardi Student Center dedication celebration, it was students who assumed the greatest risk in the startup of Sherman College. Students in those early years enrolled without the benefit of student loans and with the knowledge that their credits were non-transferrable. If Sherman failed, students would shoulder the loss. Students played a pivotal role in helping to establish the college in its current location in 1979 and continued to propel Sherman forward in the ensuing years.

“Students are the reason Sherman College exists, and they are the reason it will continue to follow its ideals. It is indeed a great honor, then, to have our names on this building – a building with a goal of serving the students of Sherman College, the future of the chiropractic profession. Betty and I humbly express our deepest thanks.” – Dr. Thomas A. Gelardi Sherman College Founder
