CORONOVIRUS AND THE HOLIDAYS HOW TO MAKE THE BEST OF AN ALREADY STRESSFUL SITUATION By Barbara Evans, EdD, LCPC
To say that 2020 has been a most challenging year is quite the understatement. Deaths, unemployment, food lines, depression & anxiety as well as social isolation. The year 2020 has proven to be more than one can fandom. Just when most people have adjusted to the “new normal” way of existing, we are presented with an increase surge of the Coronavirus resulting in an increase of deaths and hospitalizations. As if to add insult to injury, most states have required the shut-down of schools & restaurants as well as a decrease of social gathering of 6 or less persons…untimely, one week before Thanksgiving. However, before you throw that turkey in the garbage and close the blinds, consider these survival tools for getting through the holidays with a smile.
Be mindful that most people have either experienced a loss in their family or they know of someone who has been impacted by a death in theirs therefore, the Holidays serves only as a painful reminder of a loss of a loved one with no desire to celebrate.
Give a gift for the person with the lowest temperature. It’s all in the name of fun. Celebrating alone…no problem. Decide what you want to eat, cook or order it and wear your most comfortable chill outfit that will help you to relax while binge watching movies or read that new book you have been trying to make time for.

Meet Joyce Dawkins, the Founder of She ROCKS It, Celebrating Women Who ROCK which is a organization that host event experiences designed to honor and empower women all over the world; She is the founder of S.H.E. Inc non-profit, which is a organization that partners with other organizations whose mission aligns with her in that they focus on helping women move beyond their past and focus on rebuilding their future. She is the voice of My Soul Point of View which is a motivational platform where she gives her PerSOULnal Perspective on topic She is most passionate about. She is the flavor creator of My Soulfood Point of View which is where she chronicles her passion of cooking.
Lastly, she is the creator of the thriving Facebook Group I AM SHE which is a networking community for like-minded women to come together to network, meet, encourage, support, motivate, inspire and empower one another. This group was the inspiration for this publication. I AM SHE encourages women to take leap and follow their dreams. Each week different "table topics" are presented to get the women engaged around topics that impact the lives of women. The group also does a member Spotlight where members are introduced to the group and recognized for achievements they have made.

Let's get upclose and perSOULnal with Joyce as She gives her Soul Point of View on questions She has been asked often. What is your favorite time of the year? As you can probably tell from these pictures, I love the fall. I love the fall fashion selections and I love the bold reds, oranges and brown colors that complement the season. Fall also leads into the winter which is the season of my birthday. What do you do when you are not busy building your SHE brands? Thinking of ways to build the SHE brand more, LOL. I actually enjoy cooking. I consider myself a great cook and have been told that I am so I take that and run with it. What is your best dish that you prepare? I would say my peach cobbler and my collard greens. I also make a homemade barbeque sauce that has been getting a few great reviews, so I will see what happens with that.
What do you do to relax? Grab a cup of tea, turn on Netflix and get isolated alone in my office. What is your favorite saying or quote? Do the things in life that makes your Soul Satisfied! What was one of your biggest and most memorable moments as the founder of She ROCKS It? Being discovered on Instagram and then being asked to kick-off Women’s Day at the 112th Edition of the Chicago Auto Show and host my signature event The She Lounge Experience. What is on your playlist? I say ALEXA play my Gospel songs. I love all things praise and worship, contemporary and old school Gospel. What would people be surprised to know about you? That I talk to myself as if I am being interviewed, this helps me perfect the art of public speaking. What's next for your SHE Brands? I want to see how people receive this publication, maybe this is someting that I will look to do more often.

REFLECTIONS OF A HER-STORY MAKING YEAR

0 20 2 Has truly been a year to remember. As I reflect back, I had 2 children that were part of the graduating Class of 2020 who didn’t have a formal graduation, prom, junior high dance or class trip. I lost my father, and held a very nontraditional service for him; no choir singing, clapping, no large crowd to celebrate his life the way he allowed other families to celebrate their loved ones as a funeral director. This year my 50th birthday falls during a season where celebrations are limited to really no one other than your household. This was the first year, there was no Annual Celebrating Women Who ROCK Awards Gala. I no longer worked in the “office” but transitioned to my own home office. I lost an uncle/pastor who eulogized my father. I was faced with decisions, choices, changes, many things that could have impacted how I chose to live my life, but God! In the midst of all this, I became a co-author of a book, I was awarded A Leading with Virtue Award alongside some phenomenal women in the Chicagoland Area, I became an Ambassador for Diversity and Inclusion at my corporate job. God allowed me to maintain my sanity, my peace, my joy and my happiness. He continued to fill me with innovative ideas (this magazine) and had my name brought up in corporate settings at the table with leaders who never even knew who SHE was. Yes, God did that! So, I say to you, don’t let life stumbling blocks keep you on the ground, get up, dust yourself off and get back on the starting line. 2021 is looking bright! THE JOB HUNTER By Laisha McDaniel
Many professionals in the workforce wake up with the dreaded blues of going to work. However, life’s obligations leave us with no other choice than to “make the bacon.” The average working professional spends more than 90,000 hours working during a lifetime. According to a Deloitte Index Survey, 87% of Americans have no passion for their jobs. In other words, more than half of the working population are just going through the motions. Resources are certainly replaceable but the most valuable resource that can never be replaced is time. Time is precious and should be spent both wisely and strategically. Think back over the last 15 years, what opportunities has your career afforded you? Have you advanced your education? Were you able to put your degree to use? I mean after all, like most ex-students, you’re likely still paying for your collegiate education. Perhaps you had a salary adjustment and you were able to purchase a home for your family. Now if your answer is simply, “No, I’ve had little to no opportunities” it’s time for a change. Before you grit your teeth, change isn’t always bad. In fact, change is exactly what you need in 2020. It’s time to elevate your career. Yes, it’s do-able but will require some work on your behalf. First thing’s first, change your mindset. Affirm greatness and you will be great. Cancel thoughts of doubt and focus on all that will be. Even on your toughest days, remember positivity is key! 1. Get out of your way: Today marks the first day in which you take the personal pledge to remove yourself as a career barrier. Understand change starts with you. Acknowledge growth is intended to make you uncomfortable. Embrace your career journey, even the not so pretty days. I promise they’ll be worth it later. I would recommend starting a career journal and document your journey. Capture your emotions when offered an interview and even when you didn’t get the job you really wanted.
2. Assess yourself: What are you really good at? Where are your shortcomings? Success comes easier when you leverage the things you do exceptionally well and make plans to address those things you don’t. When professionals are successful in their careers, they love what they do. When it’s fueled by passion, it rarely feels like work. 3. Update your résumé: Your résumé is your professional narrative and certainly, it should tell the best story about you. Ditch the copy and paste of job descriptions résumé and create a story that shows your contributions and how you’ve moved the needle. The job market is very competitive. Position yourself to stand out in the crowd. January and February are the best times to look for a job because budgets have been created for new talent.

4. Hire a career coach: I’m sure the results of your self-assessment won’t come as a surprise but perhaps you uncovered some ugly truths. 5. Don’t take no for an answer: When one door closes, another is guaranteed to open. Delay certainly doesn’t mean denied. Make a personal commitment to not give up when things don’t move at your desired pace or if you happen to be told no. Consider the no as a warning sign; better awaits you. Like each event hosted by She ROCKS It, women will always have the opportunity to network, showcase their business as vendors, eat, network and have a great time. She ROCKS It recently launched The SHE Lounge Experience the place where the conversations take place. The She Lounge Experience is our take on a talk show. We held the She Lounge on the biggest platform to date at The Chicago Auto where we kicked off Women's Day.

Inc is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that partners with local community organizations that provide shelter, food and clothing for homeless women and women living in low-income areas. S.H.E. Inc helps by volunteering their time, talent and resources to help other organization’s fulfill their mission and purpose in serving women. S.H.E. Inc. provide meals, clothing and toiletries to these facilities.

She ROCKS It Celebrating Women Who ROCK Awards Gala is the most anticipated event of the year for our organization and the women who support us. In the past years we have seen attendance at our galas near 400 women. This year we were set to honor and acknowledge women from across the Chicagoland Area, Mississippi, Tennessee and Indiana. Invitations had gone out, tickets were on sale, the venue and menu were set. We introduce the honorees to all of social media, we shared it on radio shows and at every event we attended. The word was spreading. We were all set to go then the unthinkable. In early March the word around town was Covid-19. Each week, every day, all you heard on the news was this highly contagious flu like disease that was going from state to state country to country. The disease had gotten so bad venues were cancelling events and closing down, restaurants, stores, schools and companies we all closing their doors.

At first we postponed the gala, then we postponed it again, finally after the possibility of postponing for a 3rd time, we spoke with the venue and they agreed to transfer all money over to 2021 so that we wouldn’t lose anything. They were so supportive and even shared that this was one of the events the look forward to each year, and whatever they could do to make sure we are able to have the gala they were willing to help. After much prayer we were able to change the date of the gala to May of 2021 in hopes of the world being back open for business. The group of women that we are honoring are simply amazing and so worthy of this honor. In the following pages get to see who SHE is, then visit our Facebook page where you can scroll back and read their amazing stories and you too will see why we said SHE ROCKS IT. We are thankful that all of our honorees were so understanding and so supportive, it was truly a blessing and it showed that we had definitely selected a phenomenal group of women to honor this year.
We are grateful for those who purchased tickets in advance, they were extra supportive an understanding. Their tickets were automatically upgraded to VIP for 2021. As we continue to provide our followers with events that empower, inspire, educate, motivate our main priority is the safety of all of our guest that attended our events. While 2020 didn't allow us to host a Gala, a Girlfriend Gathering or a She Lounge Experience we did our best to keep our social media platforms engaging and informative. MEET CASSANDRA TURNER: YES....SHE PAINTED THAT! My desire to paint initially came from seeing friends on social media posting all these paintings that they had painted at Paint & Sip party/gatherings. I started seeing them more and more and over the years, I realized I had never been to one or been invited to one. As I continued to see this it sparked something inside and I thought why not plan to go to one these paint parties for myself. Finally, New Years Eve exactly three years on this upcoming Dec 31, 2020 will mark 3 years that I decided to stop waiting and I just went to one of those paint and sip galleries.
I enjoyed myself so much I went every other Sunday. After 2 months I realized I could do this same thing from the comfort of my home. I started painting at home and I haven't stopped since. I feel extremely blessed. I realized after about a year and half into this journey that I prayed for this. I remember the day I asked God to give me something I could do with my hands that I could prosper from. I know this is his gift to me because I have been very Blessed to have secured a second income doing something that I love. I encourage everyone to find that thing that makes you happy and just do it!

I am a woman who has found joy in releasing who I really am .I do that through moments. Creating special moments for me and others all while prioritizing what is important at that time.I have been on a journey to discover my true self these last several years. This happened through self-love, finding out what I want and what I need and coming to grips that it is ok to have my needs met. It is not selfish. I enjoy traveling, discovering something new about a city, creating memories that will last. I also love to cook, plan creative events and dates, and I like creating games to break the ice or get to know someone better. I also release who I am through my signature t-shirts. The Inspiration behind my signature line started with the t-shirt PRIZE. I was going through a period where I wasn’t feeling like the Queen that I am. I allowed myself to be treated less than my worth. One day, I basically told myself to wake the hell up because I am a PRIZE. And here we are. Prior to that, I always loved expressive t-shirts and would always buy from others. Ultimately, I thought, why not create your own? I realized that I can't sit and wait for the opportunities to come, because those opportunities may be waiting for me to show up! So, I am creating a path that will allow me to journey in directions where opportunities await. For example, this publication; I could've waited for someone to ask me for an interview however, why wait, If I want to do an interview, why not interview myself and share the story.
I’m just saying, 2020 has given me a new perspective and I will not sit still hoping and wishing when I could be out there getting my hustle on making it happen the way I want it to. If I want a meeting, I am going to schedule it with them rather than waiting for them to knock on the door, I am the one doing the knocking. I will be 50 and what happened in the past 49 years showed me that I have to do the things in life that make my Soul Satisfied.

I want to encourage you to get back to chasing your dreams. We had a 2020 that will go down in history, from covid-19, to remote school and jobs, to loss beyond our wildest imagination, to news headlines that seem to never end all the way to a HER-Story making election when Kamala Harris was elected as the First African American Women elected as Vice President of the United States of America. We truly had a year to remember. As I reflect back to my social media time lines I must say I had a lot of women in my network who were winning! These women were buying homes, starting new careers, launching businesses, traveling, celebrating milestones, and living their best life. 2020 may have given you a curve ball, but that's not the end of your story, so go into 2021 writing a new chapter.
