KA SIN SHERON SIU

Sheron is passionate in architecture, she loves exploring the relationship between nature, space and human. She believes that architectures are the furnitures of nature. They should respond to the surrounding environment and occupants’ needs. While everyone supposes architects do not have “life,” Sheron trusts that work-life balance is very important as an architect because we should explore the world and things that we have

LIVE & LIFE BOTANY BAY, SYDNEY FEB - NOV 2018

The senior group with a high median age occupies a considerable portion of the Australian population. Social disconnection has been recognised as one of the most common issues in this demographic group, which is also mutually shared within the younger populations. In response to this phenomenon, the concept of “co-housing is proposed as the overarching theme for this project to encourage social connection, healthy lifestyle and the promotion of creativity in Sydney. Communal amenities and shared spaces surround each apartment building serve as the major driving aspects of the design, all of which are linked by a jogging track to enhance social connection between residents. Retails are mixed with the model of SOHO (studio office home office) on the ground level, while subsequent levels are reserved for residential purpose. Each floor accommodates two units with a shared balcony in the middle that maximises the opportunities of interaction between neighbours.

SUPER TOWER CBD, SYDNEY JUL - NOV 2017

The concept of this project is connection, from outdoor to indoor. The design aims to link the Sydney landmarks together, including the CBD, Wynyard and Circular Quay Station. At the same time, the relationship between the internal spaces and interaction of the occupants are also important. Therefore, this tower is designed to serve as a gathering and meeting point. There are two building entrances, one is in the public domain near Bent Street while another one is on the street level that connects Spring and O’Connell Street. The three stories podium, rooftop garden and criss-cross atrium on the office levels are designed to create spatial connections for the occupants. In terms of structure and sustainability, the tower is mainly supported by the core on the western side, to minimise excessive sunlight in summer. Perimeter braced steel frames and double skin façade are used for the rest, to support and avoid direct sunlight hitting the interior of the building respectively.

EARTH & SKY LIGHTNING RIDGE, NSW JUL - NOV 2016

Driven by the environmental situation of the site, this researcher accommodation is designed to integrate into the crescent edge of the landscape with horizontal expanse. While preserving the best horizon and sunset spot of the site, the design is embedded along the Southeast side of the cliff. By carefully positioning the residence, laboratories and exhibition spaces, this allows the geologists and astronomers to have separated spaces for living and working. With minimalist aesthetic and natural light, the courtyards offer a sanctuary where the occupants can relax, discover and enjoy the natural landscape. To deal with the significant temperature difference throughout the year, the embedded design utilises Lightning Ridge’s landmass for its consistent temperature of 21 degrees. To further supplement this climatic response, thick insulation is implemented throughout the concrete wall of selected rooms for maintaining internal temperature while windows and open spaces allow natural ventilation.

EXPERIMENTAL ART FOUNDATION WAVERTON, SYDNEY JUL - NOV 2015

In response to the historic site and surrounding environment, the interlocking public, shared and private spaces of this experimental art foundation are designed to emphases the idea of connection between the site and spaces. To preserve the significant historical value of the coal loader and wharf, this project minimises the demolition of the site while integrating more natural elements into the design. The coal loader roof is redesigned from an empty space to a rooftop garden, with natural elements, seating and an outdoor performance space. This large open space is a great spot for sunset, which offers the occupants to gather and enjoy the bay. A small part of the coal loader is reconstructed and transformed into experimental art laboratories, workshops and exhibition spaces. By converting the coal loader from a solid form to an art foundation with access of natural light and ventilation, it strengthens the connection between the design and surrounding, from visual to physical connection.
