EX 01: FROM VOLUME TO SPACE Space making is fundamanetal to the architectural design process. As students we were asked to draw a mold of space and investigate ways in which a space can be defines, contained, and inhabited. By doing this we developed an understanding of the relationship between positive and negative space. This brought up the question of what is exterior v. interior. “Contrast between the inside and the outside can be a major manifestation of contradiction in architecture?

EX 02: THE LIVING ENVIROMENT

The translation from abstract spaces and strategies into spaces from inhabitation was the main goal of this excercise, which could occur through exploration of previous abstract spatial conditions. The intrduction of human inhabitation of spaces will require a careful scaling of spaces to host different activities including sleeping, eating, gathering, etc. Trying to adapt the spacial conditions to these specific activities will result in the conception of a very specific living enviroment.

PRIVATE PUBLIC CIRCULATION

CIRCULATION CONTINUES UP

The division of space in the project is very specific, with large focus on public space. Having the circulation take place around the outer edges of the model allows for more opportunities for space to be used for other programs.

Circulation< Private < Public The size of the spaces are meant to be divided as expressed above, circulation taking up the least amount of space for occupants to do just that, only circulate. Private space are smaller and take up less area on each floor in order to push people out into public/gathering space.

As a site strategy I chose to aggreagte my module lower towards the middle of the site not to block views across the entire site, which was left unobstructed due to a park across the street from the site. The module continues to forma tower on opposite sides of the site in order to allow for the maximum amount of units to accomodate FAR2 requirements. A courtyard was developed in the center of the aggregation which is left private to residents and is a common strategy among similar housing units on the island.
