APPLIED MUSIC COURSE INFORMATION Place of study: Mareel, Lerwick Mode of study: Full-time or part-time Length of course: Full-time: four years Part-time (structured): eight years Start date: September 2015 Entry requirements: 3 Scottish Higher(s) at grade ABB or above. OR: 2 A levels at grade BB or above. Additional entry requirements: Grade 7 Associated Board or Trinity College or equivalent on first instrument (including grade 5 music theory or equivalent). Consideration will also be given to candidates who can demonstrate a high level of ability in one or more of the following: composition and creative skills; music technology including computer-based music production. You will be required to attend an audition and interview to assess your technical ability.
COURSE SUMMARY
COURSE CONTENT Year one: CertHE Students will study five core modules and one elective module which includes Gaelic. Performance practice 1; Ensemble 1; Music in its widest context - Social, cultural, historical; Creativity is more important than knowledge; Remote digital music collaboration. Year two: DipHE Students will study five core modules and one elective module. Performance practice 2; The effective contributor; Music; power and commerce; Creative Skills; Creation through technology; Free Elective. Year three: BA Students will study five core modules and one option from two.
Do you want to study music in your home region, in any genre or style, and prepare yourself for the music industry of the future? This new exciting BA (Hons) Applied Music course has been designed for you.
Core modules: Professional practice’; Music in social and historical contexts; Research skills; Creative identity; Understanding live sound.
Studying traditional, Celtic, pop, jazz, classical or rock, this course will give you the opportunity to explore the culture of the Highlands and Islands and focus your study towards the application of music in a variety of professional contexts.
Optional units: Entrepreneurship and social enterprise; Music in educational and community contexts 1.
Addressing the modern needs of the professional musician, you will study with top individuals in their fields. You will also develop skills in business, finance, enterprise, networking and communication, which will help you access opportunities nationally, in Europe and the USA.
Year four: BA (Hons) Students will study three core modules and two optional modules. Core modules: Applied music: performance, creation or research; Applied music critique and evaluation; Personal employability strategy.

CREATIVE INDUSTRIES HOW WILL I STUDY? You will study by a combination of face to face and distance delivery. Video conference facilities at Mareel are used for regular lectures, and BA students visit the venue as part of their ‘residential weekends.’
