Weisdale Mill
Café In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn the Mill Café is a popular spot all year round for locals and visitors alike.
Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect.
The menu features locally-sourced produce and specialities, all prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the café caters for those with special dietary requirements. Our menu changes daily - check our specials board to see what we have on offer today.

NOUP & NOOST
Bert Simpson Landmarks that guide and act as places of shelter for those who live by - and from - the sea Noup & Noost is a personal and nostalgic look at Shetland - the place Bert still calls home. “When returning to Shetland I am reminded of its strong cultural influences and feel compelled to express those thoughts in my work.
Bert Simpson was born and grew up in Shetland in the 1940s and 50s, before leaving for art school and life as an artist and designer in Edinburgh. He studied furniture, ceramics and industrial design and worked for a leading firm of Edinburgh architects before turning freelance in the 1970s, mixing design projects and painting with running a successful pottery business. He is now based in Orkney and is a fulltime painter, exhibiting his work widely throughout the UK.

Dee Beale Dee Beale is a printmaker/designer based in the Peak District. Most of her prints are produced on a Japanese Print Gocco, a small selfcontained table-top screen-printing machine first produced in Japan in the 1970s. Her use of colour and Scandinavian style make these prints both charming and distinct and we are delighted to be showcasing her work in the Lower Gallery at Bonhoga for Christmas.

ISLAND CONNECTIONS
Vivian Ross-Smith Vivian is interested in the passing of knowledge through generations, resulting in communities having a deep understanding toward their island. Combining elements of painting, textiles and sculpture, Vivian embeds the stories and traditions of island life into the materials and imagery of the works.
‘Island Connections’ is a series of works considering the relationship between people and land. Vivian recently spent two months as Artist in Residence on the island of Korpo, where she developed this new body of work as a conversation between the Finnish Archipelago and her home islands of Shetland, and in particular Fair Isle. Although these two networks of islands have very different landscapes, they are tied together by latitude and island mentality. Being an islander is an identity that connects people. It’s a way of life, of thinking and being.

Toby Paterson Architecture is the starting point from which he explores the effects of the passage of time on the spaces that surround us, hinting at the economic, social or political ideas behind building projects. He has also been influenced by 20th century artists such as Robert Smithson, Victor Pasmore, Mary Martin and Donald Judd.
Toby Paterson is one of Scotland’s leading contemporary artists. His work derives from encounters with architecture and the built environment, and can manifest itself in various two and three dimensional ways, whether in galleries and museums or in public spaces. His work stems from an interest in the ideas of architects who were influenced by Modernism and working in the post-war period. Toby draws on first-hand experiences of visiting and recording built environments around the world, but his artworks go far beyond simply documenting such places: he creatively interprets and re-imagines architectural spaces.

SHETLAND CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTION Its aim was to bring a wider appreciation, enjoyment and understanding of contemporary art to people in Shetland, especially young people. With this in view, the paintings were loaned to schools on a rotational basis. They will be displayed here for up to a year.
The Shetland Contemporary Art Collection was purchased by Shetland Islands Council in 2004 with funding from the Scottish Arts Council (now Creative Scotland) and Scottish Executive. The collection, which consists of paintings, prints, photographs and sculpture, is the work of 16 artists from all over Scotland who graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow School of Art in 2004.

ITE H W & K C A L B Open and Bairns’
THE SHETLAND OPEN 2016 The Shetland Open celebrates the creativity and diverse talent abundant in Shetland, bringing together work from established and new artists. This year’s Open theme was Black and White, which inspired a fantastic variety of work that sits together as a dramatic and intriguing collection.
Winners receive a cash prize followed by a further award of £150 each from Shetland Arts to fund the creation of work for a group exhibition, taking place at Bonhoga from 29 April to 11 June 2017. This provides the opportunity for emerging and established artists to work collectively towards new work.
The Open winners were Jeanette Nowak (Photography, Print & New Media), Aimee Labourne (First Time Exhibitor), Gillian Bridle (Craft & Design) and Vivian RossSmith (Painting, Drawing & Sculpture).
The Bairns’ Open had the same Black and White theme this year and showcased a great variety of new talent. The winners were Brooke Robertson (6) for her collage, Penguins, and Evie Napier (13) for her photograph, The Smuggler’s Cave. 18
