ART
Berenice Carrington
Unearthed Ethnography, art and skran from Shetland’s oil era Saturday 25 July - Sunday 6 September Over 35 years ago the construction of the Sullom Voe oil terminal transformed the lives of many Shetlanders. Berenice Carrington presents drawings, lino prints and collages describing how the skran from the accommodation camps at Firth and Toft was saved and incorporated into a more traditional living style. Resulting from her long term research project in Shetland, the work brings together art and ethnography; “I am motivated by stories about the things that we do that enable us to make a place for ourselves. In so doing we discover our selves”.
4
The exhibition includes artworks by the Yell Arts and Crafts Group, with whom Berenice has been working to explore the similarities between what is happening in Shetland today and the oil era of the late 1970s.

1. Ethnographic drawing Wed 29 July, 1 - 4pm
An introduction to the method that has been the basis for the drawings in the Unearthed Exhibition. A series of short and simple activities demonstrate how to develop a drawing about the meaning of an object. Please bring an object to the workshop that either has significance for you or that you find intriguing. This workshop will include working with other participants as well as working independently.
2. Discovering a drawing in photographs
Tue 18 August, 10am - 1pm
Photographs can hold much more information than might appear at first glance. Historical photos have been a significant point of reference for the development of some of the drawings in Unearthed. Using tracing, overhead projectors and photocopying, you will visually dissect and reinterpret photographs and then use what you have discovered as the basis for a drawing. Photographs are available to use, alternatively you are welcome to bring your own photographs to work with.

3. Lino printing Sun 23 August 1 - 4pm
Unearthed includes a suite of six lino prints that each depict the moment when a person showed their oil era skran to the artist. In comparison to putting pencil to paper, lino prints offer a completely different way to develop a drawing. A lino image is primarily created by juxtaposing areas of ink with areas where the plain paper is exposed. Moreover, because the drawing is made by cutting into the lino and then printing it onto paper, more than one drawing can be made. This workshop involves the use of sharp hand tools and inks; participants are advised to wear covered shoes, and an old shirt to protect their clothing from staining.

When he is informed that Lime died a week previously in a car accident, Martins is intrigued by inconsistencies in the accounts of the death and decides that he can’t leave the city without investigating matters further. As a consequence, he finds himself drawn into a web of intrigue and searching for the elusive ‘third man’ who was at the scene of Lime’s death. When the head of the local military police, Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), informs him that Lime was involved in black market drug distribution, the plot thickens even further...

Eye Can Draw A Shetland Arts Case Study The current exhibition in the Upper Café Bar at Mareel brings together art and technology with powerful effect. Eye Can Draw features the work of two artists, Jackie Smith and Dawson Murray, who have been using eye-tracking technology as a drawing tool. Both Jackie and Dawson have Multiple Sclerosis resulting in limited mobility and have benefited from the development of this head-mounted equipment as a means to re-engage with drawing.
Narrative Non-Fiction Workshop.
Hosted by local writer Malachy Tallack Mareel Monday 27 July, 6pm
Drawing using the eyetracking device is very different from using pencil on paper, especially as the device uses point-to-point vector lines to construct the images digitally. The process takes a huge amount of concentration and training to restrict the eye’s natural, almost continuous motion. The computerised drawings are then used to create etching plates, woodblocks and screens from which colourful and multi-layered prints can be made using traditional print methods.
From travel to memoir to nature writing, narrative non-fiction is increasingly popular among readers today. For writers, too, using your own life as material can be hugely rewarding. But it can also be a real challenge. In this workshop, Malachy will share tools and techniques to help you turn your experiences into words, and to produce rich and dynamic writing. Malachy Tallack is a writer, editor and singer-songwriter from Shetland, currently based in Glasgow. His articles, essays and reviews have been published widely, and he has written on a variety of subjects, including politics, literature, landscape and agriculture. His book, Sixty Degrees North: Around the World in Search of Home, will be published by Polygon in July 2015, and he has recently completed a second book, The Un-discovered Islands.
