Monday 24 - Friday 28 July Shetland Arts’ Creativity Camp will allow 7-11 year olds a chance to explore a range of skills in film, drama, dance, music, literature, visual art and crafts, while developing confidence, encouraging creativity and having lots of fun! Sessions run from 10am – 4pm starting Monday 24 July, running daily through to Friday 28 July. The block will culminate in a brand new performance for friends and family. Some sessions during the week will be active, so children should wear clothes that they can move comfortably in. There will be a supervised lunch hour, so please bring a packed lunch.

The ambitious and expansive story from Stephen King, brilliantly adapted for the big screen.

Acclaimed director Christopher Nolan (Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Memento) directs this stunningly cinematic World War II drama about the evacuation of Allied troops from the French city of Dunkirk.

11-year-old Jake Chambers follows clues about another dimension and is spirited away to Mid-World, where he encounters a Gunslinger (Idris Elba) who is on a quest to reach and protect the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Dark Towerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. The tower holds both their worlds together, and is under threat from the ruthless Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey).

Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. Dunkirk features a prestigious cast, including Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy.

Shetland Arts’ Annual week-long celebration of the Shetland Fiddle Tradition, For one week each year, Fiddle Frenzy opens Shetland’s doors for everyone to learn fiddle in the islands themselves. This is a unique, immersive experience which encompasses not only music, but all of Shetland’s rich culture.

2017/2018 Classical Season

Neil Georgeson & Abby Hayward “In Our Homeland” Thursday 7 September Two musicians originally from Shetland, cellist Abby Hayward and pianist Neil Georgeson, bring a varied and timely programme exploring national and regional identity. The programme draws on the 19th Century Nationalism movement in music, presenting pieces including "In My Homeland" and "National Song" by Edvard Grieg, and pieces by Peter Sculthorpe, who appropriated indigenous Australian melodies, as well as some new arrangements of traditional Shetland music. Also featuring an intriguing John Cage piece composed for the 200th anniversary of American Independence, and a beautiful work written by Olivier Messiaen in a WWII concentration camp, as well as the complete works of Anton Webern for cello and piano and the spirituality of “Fratres” by Estonian composer Arvo Part, both of whom had their music banned by their respective governments. Sonata in E minor for cello and piano by Johannes Brahms completes the programme. This concert is the first in our 2017/2018 CLASSICAL SEASON, which will also include a solo performance by Neil Georgeson, and performances buy Scottish Opera, the Edinburgh String Quartet, and brass ensemble The Wallace Collection.

The Emoji Movie (Cert: TBC) A hilarious family animation that unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within your messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city filled with emojis, each of whom has a single facial expression – except for one. Having toured the world as frontman of Scottish indie giants, Idlewild, acclaimed songwriter Roddy Woomble recently toured UK in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of this debut solo album, My Secret Is My Silence.

Scouting for Girls are coming to Shetland as part of their tenth anniversary tour, celebrating the release of their 2007 self-titled debut album, which hit No.1 in the UK. The band, known for tracks like She's So Lovely and This Ain't a Love Song, will perform the record in full on the tour.

CARMEN SUNDAY 13 AUGUST, 1:30pm Sir Richard Eyre’s gritty production of Bizet’s steamy melodrama, filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Brilliant mezzosoprano Elina Garanca stars as the ill-fated gypsy temptress, with tenor Roberto Alagna playing her desperate lover, the soldier Don José, and Teddy Tahu Rhodes the swaggering bullfighter, Escamillo, who comes between them. Yannick Nézet Séguin conducts the timeless score, which features one beloved melody after another.

Delight in intimate musical conversation between Peter Gear & Ewen Thomson, then Jenna Reid & Kevin MacKenzie. Finish the frenzy with a Mareel session from 10pm.

Fiddle Frenzy’s last hurrah! An afternoon of Shetland Reels, informal concert tunes by Maurice Henderson & Friends, and a farewell session from 1pm to 2pm. Everyone is warmly welcomed at this free event in Mareel’s Café Bar.

Hugely talented singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner is coming to Mareel as part of his autumn tour of the UK and Europe! Newton shot to fame in 2007 when his first album, Hand Built By Robots topped the charts, since then Newton has toured the world and released four more hugely successful albums. His latest Human Love is a colourful statement of intent, an alluring maelstrom of rhythm and harmony. Embracing racing drums, African percussion, chanted choruses, ambient interludes and the most imposing hooks of his career to date. Early ’60s London, and gay men across the city are being blackmailed, threatening exposure at a time when consensual homosexual acts could still result in imprisonment. Basil Dearden’s classic thriller stars Dirk Bogarde in his most daring role, as a closeted, married lawyer fighting back against the blackmailers who dare to target him.

While in prison, bogus preacher Harry Powell learns his cellmate has hidden $10,000 somewhere around his house. After being released, Powell seeks out the man's family. A dark and dreamily atmospheric fairy tale of two innocents on the run from a terrifying bogeyman.

As you might expect for a band as renowned for its brilliant stage performances as recordings, Lau will be taking this retrospective material to concerts and festival stages throughout the summer of 2017 and then touring it in the UK during the November and December 2017.

Shetland Arts’ annual book festival Welcomes writers of local, national and international renown, Wordplay features a mix of readings, writing workshops, children’s events, and book signings. Wordplay offers a unique opportunity for readers and writers to meet with their favourite authors, hear them read their work.

The inhabitants of a Scottish island conspire to plunder 50,000 cases of whisky from a nearby stranded ship. A warm and witty remake of the beloved 1949 film, which was based on the novel by Compton Mackenzie, and which itself was based on the real events of 1941, when the S.S. Politician was shipwrecked in the Outer Hebrides. Gregor Fisher and Eddie Izzard star, and our very own Chris Stout plays on the soundtrack!

A cross-cultural romcom that’s funny, heartfelt and intelligent. When aspiring comedian Kumail connects with grad student Emily after one of his standup sets, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, dashing the hopes of Kumail’s traditional Muslim parents. Then Emily is beset with a mystery illness, forcing Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.

After Scott and Kate Johansen lose their daughter Alex’s college fund, they become desperate to recoup their losses so she can pursue her dream of attending university. With the help of their neighbour Frank they decide to start an illegal casino in the basement of their house, but, as the money rolls in, Scott and Kate discover they have bitten off more than they can chew.

Following that experience, Simon Yates has been increasingly drawn to places where few others have trod and this illustrated lecture features spectacular images of the most remote and rarely explored mountain ranges of the world.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Thursday 26 October, 8pm Mareel  £22.50 Scouting for Girls are coming to Shetland as part of their tenth anniversary tour, celebrating the release of their 2007 self-titled debut album, which hit No.1 in the UK. The band, known for tracks like She's So Lovely and This Ain't a Love Song, will perform the record in full on the tour. Scouting for Girls have made three albums since their debut, including Everybody Wants to Be on TV (2010) and Still Thinking About You (2015). Frontman Roy Stride has recently written songs for groups such as One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer and McBusted. David Lynch: The Art Life (15) The Midwife (12A) An insightful and contemplative documentary about David Lynchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life as a visual artist, narrated by the idiosyncratic filmmaker.

A sparkling French character study driven by two wonderful performances from Catherine Deneuve and Catherine Frot.

Lynch recounts the influence his youth had on him as an artist and his subsequent move into filmmaking. Combining home movies, stock footage, moody artworks and observations of him working on his paintings and sculptures, David Lynch: The Art Life is an immersive and compelling experience, with a deliciously strange and beautiful soundtrack.

The life of an ordered and sensible midwife becomes unexpectedly complicated when her fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flighty former lover arrives back in Paris, having been given just a year to live. Funny, astute and gently melodramatic, this delightful film follows the two women as they learn to accept one another and, by revealing long-held secrets, try to make up for lost years.

Land of Mine explores moral responsibility in the aftermath of war through the story of a group of these young men, working under the supervision of an embittered Danish sergeant.

Concessions include children under the age of 16 years old (those aged 16 and above must buy adult tickets), students (must produce valid ID), seniors (aged 60+), and people with disabilities.

Relaxed Screenings

Screenings where sound levels are lower than usual and the lights slightly brighter, for customers with additional support needs, autism spectrum disorder and dementia, as well as anyone else who would prefer to watch films in a more informal environment. Please note, all are welcome at these screenings but customers should be aware there may be some noise or disruption during the film.
