> True Stories

A United Kingdom (12A)

Snowden (15)

From director Amma Asante (a guest at Screenplay earlier this year with her previous film, Belle) comes this powerful drama, based on extraordinary true events. In 1947, Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable…

Few contemporary public figures are as contentious as National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden. His decision to leak classified information, exposing the astonishing breadth of the NSA's global surveillance programs, alerted the world to how seriously its privacy had been compromised. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Snowden in this gripping real-life political thriller from Oscar winner Oliver Stone.

Sully: Miracle on the Hudson (12A)

Gimme Danger (15) Including revealing interviews and blistering live footage, this hugely enjoyable new documentary from director Jim Jarmusch chronicles the story of Iggy and the Stooges, arguably one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time. The Stooges blew a crater in the musical landscape of the late 1960s, assaulting audiences with a blend of rock, blues, R&B and free jazz, and planting the seeds for what would be called punk and alternative rock in the decades that followed.

Tom Hanks stars as a modern American hero in this riveting true life drama. On 15 January 2009, Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger became a national hero when the world witnessed him pilot his disabled plane onto the waters of the Hudson River, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. However, even as Sully was being championed for his bravery and skill, an investigation was unfolding that threatened to destroy both his reputation and his career.

> Drama

Dog Eat Dog (18)

Indignation (15)

A gleefully over the top and darkly hilarious crime drama from filmmaker Paul Schrader, featuring brilliant performances from Nicolas cage and Willem Dafoe. Three ex-cons are looking for one last big job, something that’ll provide them with enough money to retire. They seem to have hit the jackpot when an eccentric mob boss hires them to kidnap a baby, but when what should be a straightforward abduction goes awry, the trio find themselves on the run from both the mob and the cops.

An intelligent, meticulously crafted drama based on the novel by Philip Roth. 1951. Marcus Messner, a brilliant working class Jewish boy from New Jersey, wins a scholarship to a small, conservative college in Ohio, thus exempting him from being drafted into the Korean War. But once there, Marcus's growing infatuation with his beautiful classmate Olivia, and his clashes with the college's imposing Dean, put his and his family's best laid plans to the test.

> White Ribbon Day Event

SUNDAY 4 DECEMBER, 4pm A special event to Mark White Ribbon Day, the international day against violence against women. Raising Our Sons to be Good Men features Michael Kaufman, the co-founder of the White Ribbon Campaign – the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women. Michael’s work for the United Nations, governments, nongovernmental organisations, women’s groups, trade unions and corporations has seen him speaking and leading workshops all over the world, and in September 2015 he visited Shetland, delivering an inspiring talk at the Lerwick Legion. This film gives you another chance to watch this positive, engaging talk, which is aimed at both men and women. Also screening as part of this special event is Wolf in my Home, a stunning short animation created by Daniel Gear for Shetland Women's Aid. For more information on the White Ribbon Campaign go to www.whiteribboncampaign.co.uk  £5

Allied (15) A thrilling romantic drama set during the Second World War, starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard and directed by Robert Zemeckis (Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future). In North Africa in 1942, intelligence officer Max Vatan encounters French Resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. Reunited in London, their relationship is threatened by the extreme pressures of the war.

> Christmas Classics

It's A Wonderful Life (U) It's Christmas Eve, 1946, and George Bailey (James Stewart), who has long considered himself a failure, faces financial ruin and arrest. High above him, two celestial voices discuss George's dilemma and decide to send down eternally bumbling angel Clarence Oddbody to help him out. But first, Clarence is given a crash course on George's life, and the multitude of selfless acts he has performed. The ultimate heartwarming Christmas classic – bring a hanky!

White Christmas (U) A charming musical starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kays, Vera-Ellen and Rosemary Clooney, with songs by Irving Berlin. A pair of former soldiers start a new career as nightclub entertainers. They try to boost the popularity of their old commanding officer’s struggling winter resort in Vermont by staging a series of extravagant shows, with a little help from their former army buddies and a talented singing sister act.

The Muppets Christmas Carol (U) The Muppet Christmas Carol's warmth, wit and obvious affection for Dickens make it one of the greatest Christmas films of all time. Scrooge (Michael Caine) is a bitter, miserly old moneylender who shoos away charity collectors, sneers at his happy-go-lucky nephew and rages at the prospect of giving his clerks a day off for Christmas. But he's forced to reconsider his attitude to the world when visited by a procession of ghosts on Christmas Eve…

Love Actually (15) Ten stories of love and heartbreak loosely intertwine in Richard Curtis’s star-studded romantic comedy. There's the new prime minister falling for the teagirl; his sister suspecting her husband may stray; her friend grieving over his wife's death; his stepson longing for a girl from school; a heartbroken writer; his newlywed friends whose best man is acting strangely; and a washed-up singer hoping for a Christmas number one. A warm and fuzzy seasonal favourite.

Frozen Sing-A-Long (PG) Elsa and Anna are two young princesses in the mountainous kingdom of Arendelle. They were once very close, until an accident caused by Elsa's icemaking powers pushed them apart. Now soon to become Queen, Elsa's worry over her powers has built so much that an emotional outburst causes her to cast the whole kingdom into eternal winter. Princess Anna must find her sister and save Arendelle. Sing along with this snow-fulled Disney adventure – the song lyrics will be projected onto the screen!

Paterson (15) Every day is much the same for bus driver and secret poet Paterson (Adam Driver). Once his shift has finished, he goes home and has dinner with his wife Laura, before taking their dog down to the local bar and enjoying one beer. Jim Jarmusch’s charming and quietly profound character study astutely observes the triumphs and defeats of daily life, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

After Love (L'économie du couple) (12A) French Language with English Subtitles After 15 years of living together, Marie and Boris decide to get divorced – but the separation proves far from simple. Boris can't afford to move out until the house in which they live with their two daughters has been sold, and they soon find themselves at an impasse in which all of their frustrations, resentments and grievances start to mingle with feelings of past affection. An astute, intelligent and moving examination of modern relationships.

Chi-Raq (15) Spike Lee’s dazzling, rage-fuelled, hip-hop musical repurposes Aristophanes’ Lysistrata – a comedy about a Greek heroine who leads a sex-strike to prevent war – setting it in Chicago’s South Side. Chi-Raq is the leader of the Spartans and the lover of foxy, feisty Lysistrata. The Spartans are at war with rival gang, the Trojans, led by Cyclops. When an 11-year-old-girl is killed in the crossfire of a gang battle, Lysistrata decides to take action.

Under the Shadow (15)

American Honey (15)

Persian Language with English Subtitles A masterful blend of family drama and psychological horror from Iranian writer-director Babak Anvari. Shideh lives with her young daughter Dorsa in a Tehran apartment amid the chaos of the Iran-Iraq war, in which her absent husband is fighting. After an air raid badly damages the building, Dorsa’s behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, and Shideh becomes convinced that a supernatural force within the building is attempting to possess her daughter.

Award-winning British director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights) crosses the Atlantic for her latest feature, a dazzling, bittersweet road movie. Star, a teenage girl from a troubled home, runs away with a travelling sales crew that drives across the American mid-west selling magazine subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this gang of teenagers, and falling for the charismatic Jake, she soon joins in with the group’s hard partying, law-bending lifestyle.

Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga Gallery, The Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events. We do this because we want to see Shetland celebrated as a place where inspiration & innovation are valued; where people want to live, work & study; and we want the full social & economic potential of the islands to be achieved.

Shetland Arts is supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082).
