Northern Flyway is a newly created performance by Inge Thomson and recently arrived Shetland resident Jenny Sturgeon, exploring the ecology, folklore, symbolism and mythology of birds and birdsong. Drawing on such sources as the extensive field-recordings of musician/composer and birdsong expert Magnus Robb, the duo have worked with singer/multi-instrumentalist Sarah Hayes (Admiral Fallow) and the renowned vocal sculptor Jason Singh to create this brand-new piece. Jenny’s background as a biologist and Inge’s home island of Fair Isle, have contributed to an evocative piece, combining vocal and instrumental composition with sonic experimentation and lush visuals. Northern Flyway will also be performed at the Tron Theatre as part of Celtic Connections 2018. 6

The Post (12A)

Phantom Thread (15)

Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks star in Steven Spielberg’s superb account of a true story of journalistic courage.

Daniel Day Lewis gives a sublime performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s compelling drama. Renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and his sister, Cyril, are at the centre of the glamorous world of post-war London fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars and heiresses. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, and finds his carefully controlled life disrupted by love.

This thrilling drama tells the story of the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post’s Katharine Graham, the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee, as they risk their careers – and their freedom – to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four US Presidents.

Mountain (PG) Sunday 28 January, 1.30pm

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (15)

Only three centuries ago, climbing a mountain would have been considered close to lunacy. The idea scarcely existed that wild landscapes might hold any sort of attraction. Peaks were places of peril, not beauty. Why, then, are we now drawn to mountains in our millions? Mountain shows us the spellbinding force of high places – and their ongoing power to shape our lives and our dreams.

It’s been seven months since her daughter was murdered and Mildred Hayes is fed up. Fuelled by grief and outraged that the investigation has gone quiet, she provokes the local police department with a series of messages plastered on three disused billboards outside her home town. So begins a rapidly escalating and very public feud between Mildred and the town’s venerated police chief.

SCREENPRIDE

All the Money in the World (15)

52 Tuesdays (15) Thursday 1 March, 5.45pm Monthly screenings of contemporary and classic films with themes or characters who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual. This award-winning drama from Australia is an insightful and moving exploration of gender and sexuality with a compelling, time-lapse structure: it was shot chronologically, every Tuesday, over a year. 16-year-old Billie goes to live with her father for a year while her mother transitions from female to male. The pair, who are extremely close, agree to meet every Tuesday during their year apart.

Ridley Scott directs Christopher Plummer and Michelle Williams in this nail-biting true story, now notorious as the film in which Kevin Spacey’s scenes were cut and re-shot at the last minute, following recent allegations against him. When 16-year-old John Paul Getty III is kidnapped, his devoted mother tries to convince his billionaire grandfather to pay the ransom. When Getty Senior refuses, the situation becomes increasingly volatile.

This powerful documentary blends intimate testimony with archive footage to bring the stories of twelve Holocaust survivors to the screen. Their stories do not end with liberation – we learn how they survived the chaos that came afterwards, and of their attempts to build new lives. BEN OTTEWELL

SATURDAY 3 MARCH, 8pm

Mareel  £15 / £10

As a singer and lead guitarist in rock band Gomez, Ben Ottewell is well known for his unmistakable voice and talent for blistering and inspired guitar solos. Rolling Stone declared "Gomez's not-so-secret weapon is Ben Ottewell." And as GQ Magazine once wrote and anyone listening can attest "his voice is not of this world". Since his first solo release, Shapes and Shadows (2011), Ottewell has been pleasing audiences with a series of sucessful acoustic tours across the UK, US and Australia. Ben has released 2 further solo albums to widespread acclaim, Rattlebag for 2014 and A Man Apart, which was released earlier this year. Ottewell will re-join his Gomez bandmates in 2018 for a tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their ground-breaking debut album, Bring It On, with most UK dates already sold out.

Human Flow (12A) Directed by artist-activist Ai Weiwei and filmed in 40 refugee camps in 23 countries, this stunningly cinematic documentary chronicles the staggering breadth of the global refugee crisis. Today there are more than 65 million displaced individuals looking for a place to call home. To profoundly moving effect, footage of refugee camps is interwoven with personal testimonies from those forced from their native lands due to war, famine and climate change.

Marjorie Prime (12A) Veteran actress Lois Smith and Jon Hamm star in this haunting vision of a future where death has become slightly less final. When her husband Walter dies, 85-year-old Marjorie decides to replace him with a Prime – an artificially intelligent avatar that looks and sounds exactly like Walter did when he was 40. This Prime provides Marjorie with much-needed support and warmth, but for her daughter, it feels like an interloper.

Hostiles (15) Christian Bale, Wes Studi and Rosamund Pike star in this compelling drama of redemption and reconciliation. 1892, New Mexico. Army captain Joseph J Blocker undertakes one final mission before retirement: he must escort Yellow Hawk – a dying Cheyenne war chief – and his family back to their sacred tribal lands. The two great warriors, once rivals across the battlefield, must learn to trust each other and find peace in an unforgiving land.

Menashe (U)

Walk With Me (PG)

A charming, wryly funny trip into Brooklyn’s ultraOrthodox Hasidic community. Menashe, a kind, hapless grocery store clerk, struggles to make ends meet and responsibly parent his young son, Rieven, following his wife Leah’s death. Tradition prohibits Menashe from raising his son alone, so Rieven’s strict uncle adopts him, leaving Menashe heartbroken. But when the Rabbi permits father and son to spend a week together, Menashe is finally given an opportunity to prove his worth.

A rare insight into a community of Buddhist monks and nuns who have given up all their possessions and left their homes in order to master the art of mindful living under the guidance of world-renowned Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh. With unprecedented access, this intimate and meditative film, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, touches on the universal themes of belonging, love, loss, hope and death.
