PRESENT VALHALLA SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY, 7.30pm
Beoga are a leading force on the music scene in Northern Ireland, and are one of the most prolific bands on the touring circuit. McKay and Stout have performed regularly with Sean Og Graham of Beoga with the group Fiddlers Bid. This led to the idea of a cross national show incorporating new material and trademark compositions. As well as a 20 minute program of new compositions, the collaboration seeks to explore and develop the music from Seavaigers (featuring the music of Sally Beamish and Chris Stout & Catriona McKay, July 2014) and Beoga’s albums The Incident (Grammy shortlisted album in 2009) and How To Tune A Fish (2012).
Mareel £18
Valhalla is a new suite of work composed by Beoga, along with Chris Stout and Catriona McKay. The artists will undertake a five-day residency commissioned by The MAC to jointly create new music. The compositions will marry the links between the music of Shetland and the music of Ireland. The residency will result in a series of performances to showcase the collaboration in The MAC and other venues across Ireland and Shetland.

Joy (12A)
The Big Short (15)
Jennifer Lawrence reunites with her Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell for the true story of Joy Mangano, who founded a business empire that spanned four generations. Joy grew up with a domineering father and put her life on hold when her parents divorced. But she eventually got sick of dealing with her family and struck out on her own, founding a hugely successful business. But big money always attracts the interests of the Mob. Reuniting Lawrence, Russell, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, Joy is the story of one woman’s determination to take on the world, no matter the cost.
It’s 2005, and the housing market is booming. But four outsiders see what no one else can: the whole thing is a time bomb. The Big Short is their story. People were buying houses they couldn’t afford, with money they didn’t have, which they borrowed from banks that were negligent and greedy. Four men realised a crash was coming, and bet against the American economy to take on the banks. And make themselves rich as well, of course. The true story of a crisis we’re still reeling from, The Big Short boasts an outstanding cast including Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell.
Sisters (15)
Creed (12A)
From the makers of Pitch Perfect - Maura is the perfect sister, who works at a hospital and is calm and collected. Katie is the other sister, rather less responsible. When they discover that their parents are selling their childhood home, they decide to throw one last party before they have to clean it out. Maura was divorced two years ago, and needs this opportunity to let her freak flag fly. As the raging party begins to spiral out of control, the girls soon realize that there may not be a house left to sell once the dust settles.
Rocky Balboa is back – but he’s not going into the ring himself this time. Instead, he’s training Adonis Johnson, the son of his friend Apollo Creed, to be a fighter. Adonis never knew his father, and he’s reluctant to take up his name. But he’s been fighting his whole life, and could have a chance at the championship with Rocky as his trainer. It’s time for him to live up to the legacy of his late father.

The Revenant (15)
The Hateful Eight (TBC)
Oscar-winning director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu brings us The Revenant, an epic true story of one man’s search for vengeance after being left for dead in a frozen waste. In 1832, Hugh Glass is mauled and nearly killed by a bear. John Fitzgerald, one of his companions, murders his son and buries Hugh alive in a shallow grave. But to John’s horror, Hugh digs himself out and comes looking for his enemy, as if he were back from the dead. Based on a haunting true story and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant is an intense, thrilling Western guaranteed to have you on the edge of your seat.
After the massive success of Django Unchained, go back to Quentin Tarantino’s Wild West for The Hateful Eight, a rip-roaring adventure starring Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson. A few years after the Civil War, The Hateful Eight sees eight violent, dangerous strangers gather in a stagecoach stopover lodge to escape a battering blizzard. John Ruth is taking a prisoner to the town of Red Rock to face justice. He’s not going to let anyone get in his way. But surrounded by unpredictable renegades and completely cut off by the storm, getting where he’s going will prove much more difficult than he anticipated.

Lady in the Van (12A)
In The Heart Of The Sea (12A)
Miss Shepherd (Maggie Smith) is an eccentric old soul. She spends her time by covering miles in her van, which happens to double up as her home. The neighbourhood are gradually becoming acquainted with her bizarre ways, until eventually one of them – a young writer by the name of Alan Bennett – invites her to park in his driveway, just until she gets something more permanent sorted. Fifteen years later she is still there. Miss Shepherd has become a feature of life in this Camden street. Directed by Nicholas Hytner, The History Boys this charming and hilarious British film is based on Bennett’s real experiences with the lady who lived in a van on his own driveway.
In The Heart Of The Sea is the true story of the whaling ship Essex, which was attacked at sea by a terrifyingly large and ferocious bull sperm whale. Shipwrecked over 1000 miles from land, the crew spend 90 days marooned on the ocean, desperately trying to escape the whale and get to South America. But with little in the way of food and water, they must turn to desperate measures to survive. From Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard, In The Heart Of The Sea stars Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw as Herman Melville, whose book Moby-Dick was inspired by these events.
Sunset Song (15)
Room (15)

But family life has its own pull and her religious father exerts a formidable force on his brood, as well as on her mother whose body he treats as both refuge and battleground. As the constellation of her family shifts around her and romance comes calling, Chris grows into womanhood just as the First World War begins to devastate a generation.winter.
Bed, Lamp, Skylight, Rug... These are the things that five-year-old Jack’s physical world is comprised of. He may have been trapped in an 11-square-foot room since his birth, but he doesn’t see it that way, as the world outside the room doesn’t exist for him. Ma, for whom their captivity is a very real concept, is absolutely determined to raise him properly, employing all the care and imagination she can muster to keep Jack educated, healthy and happy. But when a window of escape suddenly presents itself, Jack is thrust into an entirely new understanding of the world.

The Danish Girl (15)
Carol (15)
Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne takes on his next great acting challenge for The Danish Girl, playing Lili Elbe, one of the first known people to undergo gender reassignment surgery. Born Einar Wegener, she gradually realised that she was a woman trapped in a man’s body. In the 1920s, such a thing was unheard of. The surgery had never been attempted before. But it was Lili’s only chance to be the person she was supposed to be. A moving drama about a timely, untold story, The Danish Girl also stars Alicia Vikander and is directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper.
One of the most critically-acclaimed films of the year, Carol takes place in 1950s New York, where an unhappily-married woman falls in love with a young department store worker. Given the social attitudes of the ‘50s, it’s bad enough on its own. But for Carol, it’s even worse. She’s fallen in love with Therese, a woman. Caught between a loveless marriage and a relationship that people don’t understand, she is forced to choose between her family and her new love.

The Winter’s Tale BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE SUNDAY 10 JANUARY, 1:30pm Mareel, Screen 1 £12 / £10
The first in a series of exceptional plays from the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company heading for cinemas under the Branagh Theatre Live banner over the next year. Judi Dench and Kenneth Branagh star in Shakespeare’s great tragicomedy, recorded live at the Garrick. King Leontes of Sicily (Kenneth Branagh) appears to have it all: wealth, power and a loving, heavily pregnant wife, Queen Hermione (Miranda Raison). But when he suspects her of having an affair with his friend the King of Bohemia, he sets in motion a terrible train of events. In the wake of their triumphant staging of Macbeth, Kenneth Branagh and Rob Ashford reunite to co-direct this bold reimagining of the Bard’s tragicomedy of obsession and redemption. Having famously doubled the roles of Hermione and Perdita for Trevor Nunn, the great Judi Dench returns to The Winter’s Tale as noblewoman Paulina.

The Black Panthers:
Vanguard of the Revolution (15)
Ben Foster plays disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong in this gripping account of one of the sporting world’s most notorious scandals. Lance Armstrong has climbed the ranks to become possibly the greatest cyclist the world has ever known, claiming an unprecedented seven victories in the famous Tour de France race. However, journalist David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd) is suspicious of the sportsman’s success. Investigating further, Walsh takes the first steps towards exposing Armstrong’s carefully disguised, performance-enhancing drug program, eventually leading to his shocking conviction for doping.
The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature length documentary to showcase the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it.
Taxi Tehran (12A)
Life is Beautiful (PG)
Internationally acclaimed director Jafar Panahi drives a yellow cab through the vibrant streets of Tehran, picking up a diverse group of passengers in a single day. Each man, woman, and child candidly expresses his or her own view of the world, while being interviewed by the curious and gracious driver/director. His camera, placed on the dashboard of his mobile film studio, captures a spirited slice of Iranian society while also brilliantly redefining the borders of comedy, drama and cinema.
Showing as part of Holocaust Memorial Day. A gentle Jewish-Italian waiter, Guido Orefice (Roberto Benigni), meets Dora (Nicoletta Braschi), a pretty schoolteacher, and wins her over with his charm and humor. Eventually they marry and have a son, Giosue (Giorgio Cantarini). Their happiness is abruptly halted, however, when Guido and Giosue are separated from Dora and taken to a concentration camp. Determined to shelter his son from the horrors of his surroundings, Guido convinces Giosue that their time in the camp is merely a game.

Avril Thomson Smith Q&A We are pleased to be supporting local artist Avril Thomson Smith with an exhibition split between the Lower Gallery at Bonhoga and the Feature Space at Mareel. Here she answers a few questions about her work from our Exhibition Manager, Jane Matthews.
Jane: You are clearly very talented and you have an incredible eye for detail, where did you learn to draw? Avril: I learned to draw at Anderson High School and since then I have been self taught. Jane: What do you enjoy most about the process of making work? Avril: I very much enjoy the whole creative process. It’s wonderful getting outdoors and looking for inspiration. Shetland’s such a diverse place, it’s great to explore, and come up with new creative ideas. I love the process of actually putting pencil to paper, it’s so exciting seeing a piece of work develop. Jane: Have you been inspired by the work of other artists? If so, who? Avril: I am inspired by so many wonderful artists but my favourites are Mike Finnie and Ruth Brownlee. Jane: What direction would you like your work to go in next? Avril: I have so many wonderful ideas floating around I don’t know exactly how I am going to capture them all. Over the coming months I am planning to focus on a number of different paint mediums with a strong emphasis on the Lerwick Town Centre. However my ideas change from week to week so who knows what will be on display next. I am planning to book larger exhibition spaces in Shetland and possibly look at exhibiting in mainland of Scotland over the next few years.

Shetland Arts is supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082).
