Artist Fraser Taylor returns to Shetland During June and July, Bonhoga Gallery is proud to be showing an exhibition of work based on the history of the Weisdale valley. Shadowed Valley, the title of the exhibition, is taken from the book of the same name by John J. Graham, which was first published by the Shetland Publishing Company, Lerwick, in 1987. It tells the harrowing tale of one family in Weisdale and how they and their extended community’s lives were decimated by the evictions and land clearances of the nineteenth century. The artist Fraser Taylor, who conceived the exhibition, spent several months in the Booth at Scalloway between 2013 and 2014 as part of a sabbatical from his position
as Adjunct Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Whilst in Shetland he found himself inspired by the largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light. These experiences informed his drawings which are on display in the lower gallery at Bonhoga, whilst the main space upstairs is showing a series of suspended textile works which form a response to the Shadowed Valley. Fraser Taylor grew up in Scotland and studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He is an interdisciplinary artist who works with a range of media including drawing, painting,
sculpture, printmaking and animation. Alongside three other designers, Taylor set up The Cloth in 1983, an innovative design studio that created work over a four year period for Yves Saint Laurent, Paul Smith and Spandau Ballet, as well as their own ready to wear collections which sold in Harrods and Liberty of London, amongst others. Fraser Taylor’s work has since been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including major cities such as Glasgow, London, Paris, Madrid, Sydney, Tokyo, Chicago, New York, Boston, Detroit, and San Francisco. More recently, collaborative work has included set and textile designs for the Baryshnikov Art Center. Clair Aldington, Visual Arts Development Officer for Shetland Arts, commented, “It is a privilege to be showing work at Bonhoga by such an eminent artist and designer as Fraser Taylor. The pieces have been specially created for the gallery space as well as reflecting the wider context and history of Weisdale. Fraser will be taking over all of Bonhoga for Shadowed Valley and so it promises to be a unique, immersive and unmissable experience for visitors to the gallery. Fraser will be in Shetland installing his show and will be leading a series of events about his work so please come along and meet him.”

The new park includes a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park type setting. The island also contains a luxury resort with hotels, restaurants, nightlife, and golf. And, of course, unprecedented up-close access to real, living dinosaurs - the full execution of John Hammond’s dream. But humanity’s continuing efforts to dominate nature generate unexpected and dangerous results.
(PG)
A new twist on the world’s most famous detective. 1947, an aging Sherlock Holmes returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he has witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love - before it’s too late.
Tomorrowland: A World Beyond (12A) From Disney and two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) comes a riveting, mystery adventure Tomorrowland: A World Beyond, starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as Tomorrowland. What they must do there changes the world - and them - forever.
A Royal Night Out (12A) On May 8th 1945, everything changed. The Allies won the war, and VE Day (Victory in Europe) was celebrated in the streets of London. Behind the palace walls, the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret can only watch while the people of the city enjoy their victory. After some serious persuasion, their parents – the King and Queen – let them out for the night, but only under close supervision. It’s not long before the plan goes awry, and Elizabeth finds herself separated from her sister. MR HOLMES

HORROR! INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 3
Insidious Chapter 3 (15) The new chapter in the terrifying horror series is written and directed by franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell. When teenager Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) senses that her late mother is trying to contact her, she seeks help from gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). However, Elise’s tragic past makes her reluctant to use her abilities. After Quinn is attacked by a malevolent entity, her father (Dermot Mulroney) pleads with Elise for help. With support from two parapsychologists, Elise ventures deep into The Further - where she finds a powerful demon with an insatiable craving for human souls.
Poltergeist (15) Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spiderman, Evil Dead) and director Gil Kenan (Monster House) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.
MUSIC ON FILM Danny Collins (15) Al Pacino stars as aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins, who can’t give up his hard-living ways. But when his manager (Christopher Plummer) uncovers a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, he decides to change course and embarks on a heartfelt journey to rediscover his family, find true love and begin a second act.
Heaven Adores You (12A) Heaven Adores You is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith. By threading the music of Elliott Smith through the dense, yet often isolating landscapes of the three major cities he lived in — Portland, New York City and Los Angeles — Heaven Adores You presents a visual journey and an earnest review of the singer’s prolific song writing and the impact it continues to have on fans, friends, and fellow musicians.
Lambert & Stamp (15) Aspiring filmmakers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp were studio assistants at Shepperton in the early ’60s. Inspired by the burgeoning youth culture, they hoped to make a truthful and authentic documentary about a rock band – except they didn’t have a rock band. But then they found The Who, a proto-Mod foursome of creative misfits, and persuaded the group to let them become their managers. Despite their having zero management experience, Lambert and Stamp’s considerable tenacity and very real talent proved crucial to the rise of one of the greatest rock acts of all time. They travel from the frigid Antarctica to 1960s New York City, ending in mod London, where they must face their biggest challenge to date: saving all of Minionkind from annihilation.
Two By Two (U) It’s the end of the world. A flood is coming. Luckily for Dave and his son Finny, a couple of clumsy Nestrians, an Ark has been built to save all animals. But as it turns out, Nestrians aren’t allowed. Sneaking on board with the involuntary help of Hazel and her daughter Leah, two Grymps, they think they’re safe. Until the curious kids fall off the Ark. COMEDY Pitch Perfect 2 (12A)
While We’re Young (15)
Spy (15) Despite having solid field training, CIA analyst Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy, Bridesmaids, The Heat and Tammy) has spent her entire career as a desk jockey, working hand-in-hand with dashing agent Bradley Fine (Jude Law). Using high-tech equipment and a hidden earpiece, Susan is the guardian angel who helps Bradley avoid danger. However, when Bradley is assassinated by Bulgarian arms dealer Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), Susan wrangles her way into her first undercover assignment to help capture Boyanov and avenge Bradley.
While We’re Young stars Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts as Josh and Cornelia, a childless New York married couple in their mid-forties. The couple gravitates toward a young hipster couple named Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). Soon the older couple begin to enjoy the energy they feel hanging out with the younger generation, but Josh begins to suspect his new best friend might not be as straightforward and trustworthy as he thought.
MAN UP
12
The Barden Bellas are back in Pitch Perfect 2, the follow-up to summer 2012’s smash hit. Now in their senior year, the Barden Bellas are back to compete in an international a cappella competition that no American group has ever won before. Following an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction that sees Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) expose herself at an event to celebrate the US President’s birthday, the Barden Bellas attempt to restore their tarnished reputation by entering the World Championships, which sees them competing against European champions Das Sound Machine from Germany.
Man Up (15) Nancy is done with dating. 10 times bitten, 100 times shy, she’s exhausted by the circus. So when Jack blindly mistakes her for his date, no one is more surprised than her when she does the unthinkable and just - goes with it. It’s going to take a night of pretending to be someone else for Nancy to finally man up and be her painfully honest, awesomely unconventional self - but will Jack also man up, and be able to get over her duplicity? Best just to let the evening unfold, roll with the consequences, and see if one crazy, unpredictable, complicated night can bring these two messy souls together.
With an ensemble cast that includes Olivia Colman, Kate Fleetwood, Anita Dobson and Tom Hardy, London Road documents the events that shook Suffolk in 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and
kerb-crawling on their street. The film follows the community who found themselves at the epicentre of the tragic events, and is based on interviews conducted with the road’s real residents. Using their own words set to an innovative musical score, London Road tells a moving story of ordinary people coming together during the darkest of experiences.
Mareel Cinema Thursday 2 July Hailed as a remarkable, groundbreaking work during two sell-out runs at the National Theatre, the feature film adaptation of London Road reunites the award-winning team, with a script by Alecky Blythe, music by Adam Cork, and directed by Rufus Norris (Broken).

27 May
10 June
24 June
Norwegian language, English subtitles.
Anger rages in Philip (Jason Schwartzman) as he awaits the publication of his sure-to-succeed second novel. He feels pushed out of his adopted home city by the constant crowds and noise, a deteriorating relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elisabeth Moss), and his indifference to promoting his own work. When Philip’s idol Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce) offers his isolated summer home as a refuge, he finally gets the peace and quiet to focus on his favorite subject - himself. A complex, intimate, and highly idiosyncratic comedy, Listen Up Philip is a literary look at the triumph of reality over the human spirit.
Swedish language, English subtitles.
Jauja (15)
A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (12A)
Ellen can see in her dreams. The way the world around her looks, her husband’s office, their favourite restaurant - memories. It’s when Ellen awakes each morning and opens her eyes that she suddenly remembers she is blind. With her life suddenly and dramatically changed, Ellen has retreated to the safety of her apartment where she can feel in control once again. Her imagination becomes her reality - her deepest fantasies, desires and fears provide a constant internal monologue, inventing her own world to substitute the one she has lost. But how can she make sense of all that is happening to her and who can she trust now?
Mommy (15)
3 June
French language, English subtitles. Mommy is a powerful film about the ferocity of a mother’s love. A feisty widowed single mom finds herself burdened with the full-time custody of her unpredictable 15-year-old ADHD son. As they struggle to make ends meet, Kyla, the peculiar new neighbour across the street, offers her help. Together, they find a new sense of balance, and hope is regained.
17 June
Captain Gunnar Dinesen (Viggo Mortensen) has come from Denmark with his fifteen year-old daughter to take an engineering job with the Argentine army. Being the only female in the area, Ingeborg creates quite a stir among the men. She falls in love with a young soldier, and one night they run away together. When he wakes up the Captain realises what has happened and decides to venture into enemy territory to find the young couple. Jauja is the story of a man’s desperate search for his daughter, a solitary quest that takes us to a place beyond time, where the past vanishes and the future has no meaning.
A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE
This wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family handsome businessman Tomas, his willowy wife Ebba and their two blond children - on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but during lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche suddenly bears down on the happy diners. With people fleeing in all directions and his wife and children in a state of panic, Tomas makes a decision that will shake his marriage to its core and leave him struggling to reclaim his role as family patriarch.
1 July
Swedish language, English subtitles. Sam and Jonathan are two travelling salesmen peddling novelty items mostly unsuccessfully. Like modernday Don Quixote and Sancho, they take us on a kaleidoscopic journey through multiple human destinies. It is a trip that shows us beauty in one moment, pettiness in another and the humour and tragedy within us all, one that evokes the grandeur of life as well as the ultimate frailty of humanity.
