Swiss Army Man (15)
A Street Cat Named Bob (12A)
Outrageously funny and deeply affecting, Swiss Army Man tells the tale of Hank (Paul Dano), who is stranded on a desert island and has given up all hope of ever making it home again. But one day everything changes when a corpse named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe) washes up on the shore. The two become fast friends, and ultimately go on an epic adventure that will bring Hank back to the woman of his dreams. Bursting with creativity in both form and content, Swiss Army Man creates a world like no other, and strikes a perfect balance of humour and heart.
James Bowen (Luke Treadaway) is in a bad place. Addicted to drugs from an early age, the Covent Garden busker lives a chaotic life and has endured periods of homelessness. But his life changes when a stray ginger tom cat turns up in his supported housing complex. He names his new feline pal Bob and the duo soon become inseparable, giving James the motivation to turn his life around. Based on the inspirational bestseller of the same title, and starring none other than the real Bob as himself, this is a moving, uplifting and often humorous story of hope and friendship.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (12A) War on Everyone (15) A box office smash in New Zealand and a favourite at this year’s Screenplay, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a warm and affecting comedy with a serious message. Ricky Baker, a defiant young city kid, is sent by child welfare services to live in the country with foster aunt Bella and cantankerous foster uncle Hec (Sam Neill). When Bella suddenly passes away and child services decide to take him back to a care home, Ricky runs away into the bush with uncle Hec in pursuit. When child services jump to the conclusion that a mentally unstable Hec has abducted Ricky, triggering a national manhunt, the two have to overcome their differences to survive.
John Michael McDonagh, the award-winning writerdirector of The Guard and Calvary, crosses the Atlantic for his highly anticipated third film, a jet-black action comedy starring Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Peña and Theo James. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Terry Monroe and Bob Bolaño are two corrupt cops who set out to blackmail and frame every criminal unfortunate enough to cross their path. But things take an unexpected turn when Terry and Bob try to intimidate someone who’s even more dangerous than they are. Or is he?

Deepwater Horizon (12A)
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (12A)
Mark Wahlberg stars in a thrilling drama of reallife heroism. In April 2010, one of the world's most devastating man-made eco catastrophes took place when BP's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, leading to a massive oil spill and to eleven people losing their lives. Little reported at the time were the stories of immense courage as workers struggled desperately to avert the calamity and managed to prevent an even greater death toll. Mark Wahlberg plays electrician Mike Williams in this compelling and inspirational action drama charting the 48 hours leading up to the disaster.
Tom Cruise races against time to expose an elaborate conspiracy in this thrill-packed action sequel. Formidable ex-military badass Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) returns to Virginia to meet up with Major Susan Turner, the head of his former unit. There's considerable mutual admiration between these two uncompromising individuals, and perhaps a little more. But when Reacher arrives, he finds that Major Turner has been arrested on an espionage charge. He quickly realises that she's been set up as part of a dark, far-reaching conspiracy that also results in him being charged with a crime that was committed nearly two decades ago.
Doctor Strange (12A)
The Accountant (15)
Benedict Cumberbatch is a sorcerous superhero in Marvel’s latest all-action extravaganza. Doctor Stephen Strange (Cumberbatch) is a brilliant yet arrogant neurosurgeon whose life is turned upside down when he barely survives a devastating car accident. Embarking on a journey of self-discovery, he travels to the Far East, where he becomes the protégé of the mysterious Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Soon Stephen’s abilities are put to the ultimate test when villainous Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) threatens the future of the entire world.
An intense, compelling thriller starring Ben Affleck as a mathematics savant in deep with deadly criminals. At a young age, Christian Wolff’s penchant for complex mathematics left people awed. Now an adult, he’s a highly successful financial consultant who has more affinity for numbers than people. But Chris’ story has a dark side: behind his apparently unremarkable façade, he is in fact the accountant for some of the most dangerous criminals on the planet. With treasury agent Ray King (JK Simmons) closing in on Chris’ operations, it doesn’t take long for the body count to start rising.

I, Daniel Blake (15)
The Light Between Oceans (12A)
59-year-old Geordie joiner Daniel Blake suddenly finds himself unable to work, and in need of help from the State for the first time in his life. He forms an unlikely alliance with single mother Katie, whose only chance to escape a one-roomed homeless hostel in London has been to accept a flat in a city 300 miles away. Daniel and Katie find themselves in no-man's land, caught on the barbed wire of welfare bureaucracy in modern day Britain. Winner of the Palme D’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Ken Loach’s latest, written by his regular collaborator Paul Laverty, is tender, witty and devastatingly relevant.
Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender star in an emotional romantic drama about a couple facing a moral dilemma. On the remote island of Janus in Western Australia in the aftermath of WWI, traumatised war veteran Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) works as the lighthouse keeper. He's married to warm and vivacious Isabel (Alicia Vikander), who's the love of his life. But unfortunately the couple are unable to have children. When a rowing boat washes ashore containing a baby girl, Isabel implores her husband to keep the child and pretend that she's their own. Against his better judgement, he gives in. But this decision has far-reaching consequences.
Nocturnal Animals (15)
Arrival (12A)
Amy Adams, Jake Gyllenhaal and Armie Hammer star in the second feature from fashion-designerturned-director Tom Ford (A Single Man), a stylish and effective psychological thriller about a woman who is forced to confront the demons of her past. Susan is a successful Los Angeles art-gallery owner who wants for very little, yet she finds her paradise troubled by the frequent absences of her second husband, a handsome young doctor. Susan is rattled further when a manuscript arrives on her desk, a dark and violent novel written by her long-estranged first husband and dedicated to her.
A thrilling and visually stunning sci-fi blockbuster that is also intelligent and moving as it explores the idea of what it is to be human. When twelve alien spacecraft land around the world, linguistics expert Dr Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) are recruited by the US military to obtain the answer to one question: "What do they want?" Arriving in Montana, working under the leadership of Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker), Louise and Ian are only remotely aware that their lives and the future of humanity are about to become inextricably linked.

My Scientology Movie (15) The inimitable Louis Theroux delves into the world of Scientology, one of the world’s most mysterious and powerful religions. When his request to enter the Church of Scientology headquarters is turned down, the unassuming Theroux won’t be put off. Inspired by the Church’s alleged techniques, and aided by former Scientology members-turned-whistleblowers, Theroux uses actors to recreate incidents people claim to have experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. However, in a bizarre twist, it becomes clear that Louis is not the only one making a documentary… This screening will be followed by a recorded Q&A with Louis Theroux, which was broadcast live to cinemas on 10 October.

> ScreenFocus: Studio Ghibli
SCREENF CUS
A four-film celebration of the brilliant Japanese animation company, Studio Ghibli. Co-founded by Oscar-winning director Hayao Miyazaki in 1985, the studio has been producing extraordinary hand-drawn animated feature films and shorts for more than thirty years. Shetland Arts have hand-picked these four films spanning the company’s history showcasing their most popular features, from their early outings to their most recent release.
My Neighbour Totoro (U)
Howl's Moving Castle (U)
Studio Ghibli's 1988 breakthrough set its writer/ director Hayao Miyazaki on the road to success and made the title character, Totoro, as famous among children in Japan as Winnie-the-Pooh is in Britain.
In the wake of Spirited Away comes Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle, containing strongly anti-war themes influenced by the Iraq war. This film is adapted from a British novel of the same name by writer Diana Wynne Jones.
Two young girls find that their new country home is in a mystical forest inhabited by a menagerie of magical creatures. They befriend Totoro, the biggest and eldest of the forest spirits, who is also the keeper of the forest. As the girls' mother lies sick in the hospital, Totoro takes the sisters on a magical adventure, but also helps them to understand the realities of life.
Sophie, a young hatter, encounters a wizard named Howl on her way to visit her sister. Jealousy gets the better of the 'Witch of the Waste' and she transforms Sophie into an old woman. Ashamed and afraid, Sophie flees to Howl's magic moving castle seeking to break her curse. But will Howl see her for who she really is?
Spirited Away (PG)
When Marnie Was There (U)
Released in 2001, Spirited Away became the most successful film in Japanese history and received widespread critical acclaim as well as the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
The newest feature from Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli is a sweeping story of friendship, mystery and discovery that delivers stirring emotions and breathtaking animation as only Ghibli can.
Chihiro and her parents stumble upon a seemingly abandoned amusement park. After her mother and father are turned into giant pigs, Chihiro meets the mysterious Haku, who explains that the park is a resort for supernatural beings who need a break from their time spent in the earthly realm, and that she must work there to free herself and her parents.
Sent from her foster home in the city to a sleepy town by the sea in Hokkaido, emotionally distant adolescent Anna dreams her days away among the marshes. When she discovers an abandoned mansion, she becomes obsessed with it, and infatuated with a girl who lives there – a girl who may or may not be real.

Julieta (15)
Little Men (PG)
Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar adapts three stories from Canadian Nobel Prize winner Alice Munro for this time-tripping tale about the relationship and eventual rupture between a Madrid teacher and her beloved daughter. Julieta is the middle-aged mother of Antía, whom she hasn’t seen for 12 years. Just as Julieta is about to leave Madrid for good, a chance meeting reveals that Antía, now a mother of three, is living happily in another country. The discovery prompts a radical change of plan, gradually explained in a series of flashbacks which explore Julieta’s emotional complexity.
American director Ira Sachs (Love is Strange) returns with one of the best films of the year. Jake and Tony are two 13 year olds who form a deep friendship in the aftermath of the death of Jake’s grandfather. But the family bereavement also brings the shop run by Tony’s mother into the hands of Jake’s parents (Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Ehle), whose plan to raise the rent leads to an increasingly bitter feud, and threatens the boys’ friendship. A perfectly drawn, achingly sympathetic character drama with subtle insights into the true nature of gentrification.
A Good American (15)
American Honey (15)
The mass surveillance revealed by whistleblower Edward Snowden was not the first scandal in the history of the American intelligence agency NSA. Friedrich Moser’s eye-opening documentary tells the deeply disturbing story of how corruption, lies and personal ambitions led to the closure of a cheap and effective monitoring system that demonstrably could have stopped the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Former intelligence agent Bill Binney reveals how this brilliant system was abandoned in favour of an expensive, useless intelligence programme that in turn had the advantage of creating hundreds of jobs at the intelligence agency – and handsomely rewarded a number of former NSA employees.
Award-winning British director Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, Wuthering Heights) crosses the Atlantic for her latest feature, a dazzling, bittersweet road movie. Star (Sasha Lane), a teenage girl from a troubled home, runs away with a travelling sales crew that drives across the American mid-west selling magazine subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this gang of teenagers, and falling for the charismatic Jake (Shia LaBeouf), she soon joins in with the group’s hard partying, law-bending lifestyle.
