ART
Berenice Carrington
Unearthed Ethnography, art and skran from Shetland’s oil era Saturday 25 July - Sunday 6 September Over 35 years ago the construction of the Sullom Voe oil terminal transformed the lives of many Shetlanders. Berenice Carrington presents drawings, lino prints and collages describing how the skran from the accommodation camps at Firth and Toft was saved and incorporated into a more traditional living style. Resulting from her long term research project in Shetland, the work brings together art and ethnography;
4
“I am motivated by stories about the things that we do that enable us to make a place for ourselves. In so doing we discover our selves. The exhibition includes artworks by the Yell Arts and Crafts Group, with whom Berenice has been working to explore the similarities between what is happening in Shetland today and the oil era of the late 1970s.
Lino printing Sun 23 August, 1 - 4pm Unearthed includes a suite of six lino prints that each depict the moment when a person showed their oil era skran to the artist. In comparison to putting pencil to paper, lino prints offer a completely different way to develop a drawing. A lino image is primarily created by juxtaposing areas of ink with areas where the plain paper is exposed. Moreover, because the drawing is made by cutting into the lino and then printing it onto paper, more than one drawing can be made. This workshop involves the use of sharp hand tools and inks; participants are advised to wear covered shoes, and an old shirt to protect their clothing from staining.

COMEDY FILMS Absolutely Anything (12A) In order to test the Earth, a group of aliens (voiced by the Monty Python team) give one human the power to do Absolutely Anything. If he uses it for evil, the Earth will be destroyed. Neil Clarke (Simon Pegg) wakes up one morning with these unexplained godlike powers, and despite his best intentions, he uses them exactly as responsibly as you’d expect: to spy on his attractive neighbour (Kate Beckinsale) and give his dog Dennis (the late Robin Williams) the ability to speak.
The Legend of Barney Thompson (15) Directoral debut from Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, Full Monty, 28 Weeks Later). Barney (Carlyle) is a hapless barber, devoid of charm and ‘patter’. Attempting to cover his tracks, he finds himself on the run from the bearish Detective Inspector Holdall (Ray Winstone) and a testosteronedriven local Police task force at each other’s throats over the ongoing crimes. With his sanity threatening to unravel, Barney turns to his domineering mother, Cemolina (Emma Thomson) for help. There’s no turning back now and the path that lies ahead for Barney may yet be littered with more murderous consequences than he could have ever anticipated.

FILMS Simmonds. Life begins to imitate art in uncanny ways when earthy British beauty Gemma (Gemma Arterton) and her furniture restorer husband Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng) move to the very same Norman village where Madame Bovery was written. Local baker and Flaubert fan Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini) falls for the lovely and charming newcomer and sets out to be her mentor. It doesn’t take long before his wild imagination leads him to draw parallels between the literary and real life woman, as he insinuates himself into her life. She soon finds herself at a crossroads that seems to be fulfilling Joubert’s worst fears that her destiny is mirroring that of Flaubert’s doomed heroine.

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., Straight Outta Compton tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.
Legend (TBC) Ronnie and Reggie Kray were identical twin gangsters whose exploits became a criminal legend, and controlled the organised crime scene in London during the 1960s. Starting out by owning nightclubs, they eventually became celebrities in their own right. Ronnie, unfortunately, was an unbalanced paranoid schizophrenic who was very prone to violence, and with Americans keen to invest in the Krays’ businesses, Reggie had to try and keep him under control. Starring Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road) in a double performance as both twins, Legend is a thrilling gangster drama directed by Brian Helgeland.

Roger Waters The Wall (12A) Roger Waters, co-founder and primary songwriter of Pink Floyd, fuses the epic and the personal in Roger Waters The Wall, a concert film that goes well beyond the stage. Othello is the greatest general of his age. A fearsome warrior, loving husband and revered defender of Venice against its enemies. But he is also an outsider whose victories have created enemies of his own, men driven by prejudice and jealousy to destroy him. As they plot in the shadows, Othello realises too late that the greatest danger lies not in the hatred of others, but his own fragile and destructive pride. After more than a decade working in film and television on projects from Star Wars to Holby City, Hugh Quarshie returns to the RSC to play Shakespeare’s Othello. He was last seen with us in Faust and Julius Caesar (1996). Hugh will play opposite Lucian Msamati in the role of Iago, returning to the RSC following his role as Pericles in 2006. The production is directed by Iqbal Khan (Much Ado About Nothing, 2012).

‘It won’t be pretty…’ A Shetland Arts Case Study AN EXHIBITION BY THE SPACE2FACE GIRLS’ GROUP 2 - 4 JULY 2015
For three days at the beginning of July, there was an unusual exhibition of artwork entitled ‘It won’t be pretty’. The exhibition was shown in the tiny Lodberrie Traders venue in Lerwick, and all the work was created by a small group of girls from the Anderson High School. For the last two years, between the ages of 13-15, the girls have been working with space2face, a restorative arts project, run jointly by the Community Mediation Team and Shetland Arts. The girls’ group meets weekly for an hour with the support of the school (half an hour during school time and half an hour in the girls’ own time) and works with two artists. The girls developed the structure for the group as well as their own guidelines as to how they would like everyone to behave (including staff) in each session. The exhibition was a selection of some of their work based around the themes they have been exploring together.
‘It’s been a privilege to have worked with the girls and to see them change and mature into young women. Some of their achievements within the group have been remarkable and we are proud to be showing their work in this exhibition and sharing it with others’, said Ana Arnett, a space2face project artist. ‘I like coming to the girls’ group ‘cos I get to make a mess and I’ve learned a lot of things, even though I found it difficult speaking at first. It’s been helpful ‘cos we’ve talked about the difficult things that the school doesn’t talk about,’ said a member of the group. Clair Aldington, of Shetland Arts, commented, ‘Shetland Arts is proud to be a founding partner, alongside the Community Mediation Team, of space2face which is a unique project in Scotland. The girls’ work is a testament to their creativity and willingness to tackle difficult issues in their lives and within society.’
59 people visited the exhibition over the three open afternoons. A total of £500 was raised from the sale of artwork and the proceeds, at the girls’ request, will go towards continuing the girls’ group and the space2face project. The space2face project uses the arts alongside restorative approaches to work with people of all ages who are involved in conflict or harm in their lives. It provides an opportunity for participants to look at what has happened, how it has affected them and others, and what they need to be able to move on with their lives in a safer way.
GET INVOLVED! Shetland Youth Theatre has been accepted as part of NT Connections (the festival of youth theatre run by the National Theatre). Between now and the end of September the group are holding workshops/skill sessions. After the October break there will

be a series of initial rehearsals for a brand new production. These will continue more intensively after Christmas with performances in Shetland during Feb/March and Inverness in April.
We are always keen to welcome new young people into the company. If you are between the ages of 12 & 21 and would like to be part of this exciting project then please contact John Haswell at Shetland Arts on 01595 743843 or john.haswell@shetlandarts.org
