A warm and witty drama about art, life and love.

When Abdul Karim, a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen's Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself (played, majestically, by Judi Dench). As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance.

Paris, 1964. Alberto Giacometti, the famous artist, bumps into his friend, the American critic James Lord, and asks him to sit for a portrait, saying it'll only take a couple of days. Lord is flattered by the request, but as the days go by and turn into weeks, seemingly with no end in sight, he realises his entire life has been hijacked by this erratic genius.

At Detroitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Algiers Motel on a sweltering July night, a random shot from a starting pistol triggers an incident that leaves three black men dead and a black security guard trying desperately to mediate between his white superiors and an enraged African-American community.

Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. Dunkirk features a prestigious cast, including Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy.

2017/2018 Classical Season

Neil Georgeson & Abby Hayward “In Our Homeland” Thursday 7 September Two musicians originally from Shetland, cellist Abby Hayward and pianist Neil Georgeson, bring a varied and timely programme exploring national and regional identity. The programme draws on the 19th Century Nationalism movement in music, presenting pieces including "In My Homeland" and "National Song" by Edvard Grieg, and pieces by Peter Sculthorpe, who appropriated indigenous Australian melodies, as well as some new arrangements of traditional Shetland music. Also featuring an intriguing John Cage piece composed for the 200th anniversary of American Independence, and a beautiful work written by Olivier Messiaen in a WWII concentration camp, as well as the complete works of Anton Webern for cello and piano and the spirituality of “Fratres” by Estonian composer Arvo Part, both of whom had their music banned by their respective governments. Sonata in E minor for cello and piano by Johannes Brahms completes the programme. This concert is the first in our 2017/2018 CLASSICAL SEASON, which will also include a solo performance by Neil Georgeson, and performances by Scottish Opera, the Edinburgh String Quartet, and brass ensemble The Wallace Collection.

Edinburgh String Quartet Wednesday 15 November An emotionally charged programme featuring the most intense of Haydn’s Op 20 quartets; a work which has been described as Janácek’s “Manifesto on Love”; and Tchaikovsky’s second quartet, regarded by the composer in the year it was written as his finest work. This concert will also feature a new quartet by Tom Harrold as part of the Edinburgh Quartet’s “NorthSouth-East-West” Project in which the Quartet will be joined on stage by local amateur string players. This concert is the second in our 2017/2018 CLASSICAL SEASON, which will also includes performances by Scottish Opera, a solo performance by Neil Georgeson and brass ensemble The Wallace Collection.

An exhibition celebrating the long and varied artistic career of Shetland’s well-known Maxie Bain. Bringing together new and old work; drawings, watercolours and oils, Maxie will be showing both portraiture and the landscapes for which he has become renowned.

As you might expect for a band as renowned for its brilliant stage performances as recordings, Lau will be taking this retrospective material to concerts and festival stages throughout the summer of 2017 and then touring it in the UK during the November and December 2017.

With live accompaniment by RM Hubbert THURSDAY 19 OCTOBER - Mareel Screen 1  £15 (£12/£10) A superb event combining silent cinema with live music written and performed by multi-award-winning post-rock Scottish composer and songwriter RM Hubbert (aka Hubby), whose brand new guitar score was commissioned by the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival in Bo’ness. Legendary Soviet director Lev Kuleshov adapted a short story by Jack London for this tense Western. Three gold prospectors are holed up in a cabin – one driven to murder by greed, the others wrestling with whether to wait for the snow and ice to thaw and summon the authorities, or to take the law into their own hands… The score for ‘By the Law’ was premiered at the Hippodrome Silent Film Festival in March 2017 and tours Scotland this summer and autumn supported by Film Hub Scotland. They’ve been adversaries for years but now must they come together for 24 hours to get from England to The Hague. Along the way they encounter high-speed car chases, outlandish boat escapades and a merciless Eastern European dictator (Gary Oldman), who is out for blood.

Following that experience, Simon Yates has been increasingly drawn to places where few others have trod and this illustrated lecture features spectacular images of the most remote and rarely explored mountain ranges of the world.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY TOUR Thursday 26 October, 8pm Mareel  £22.50 Scouting for Girls are coming to Shetland as part of their tenth anniversary tour, celebrating the release of their 2007 self-titled debut album, which hit No.1 in the UK. The band, known for tracks like She's So Lovely and This Ain't a Love Song, will perform the record in full on the tour. Scouting for Girls have made three albums since their debut, including Everybody Wants to Be on TV (2010) and Still Thinking About You (2015). Frontman Roy Stride has recently written songs for groups such as One Direction, 5 Seconds of Summer and McBusted. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia, 1937. Maud is stuck living with her unsympathetic aunt. Desperate to break away, she responds to a local fish seller’s ad for a housekeeper. Everett Lewis is disagreeable and initially cruel to Maudie, but the two quickly come to realise that they need and understand each other.

A white-sheeted ghost (Casey Affleck) returns to his suburban home seeking to console his bereft wife (Rooney Mara), only to find that he must watch passively as the life he knew and the woman he loves slowly slip away. Increasingly unmoored, the ghost embarks on a cosmic journey through memory and history.

As a young girl, Una ran away with an older man, Ray, a crime for which he was arrested and imprisoned. Fifteen years later, when she comes across a photo of him in a magazine, Una tracks him down to his workplace, an action which threatens to destroy her precarious stability as well as Ray’s new life.

Also starring Liev Schreiber and Peter Sarsgaard, Pawn Sacrifice chronicles Fischer’s terrifying struggles with genius and madness, and the rise and fall of a kid from Brooklyn who captured the imagination of the world.

45 years after Pink Floyd filmed Live at Pompeii in the legendary Roman amphitheatre, David Gilmour returned for two spectacular shows, part of his year-long tour in support of his number one album Rattle That Lock. This audio-visual spectacle features lasers, pyrotechnics and a huge circular screen on which specially-created films complement selected songs, but paramount above all is the astonishing music and stellar performances from an all-star band. The show includes songs from throughout David's career as well as many Pink Floyd classics.

A captivating biopic of artist Touko Laaksonen, aka Tom of Finland, one of the most influential gay artists of the 20th century. After the trauma of serving in WWII, Tuoko finds no peace at home, as he has to go to increasingly great lengths to hide his homosexuality. As the secret affairs and police crackdowns wear on him, he commits more deeply to his art, drawing inspiration from the uniforms that oppress him.
