The intensive will finalise with the group performing a curtain raiser for the SHOTPUT performance on Saturday night on Mareel’s main stage. Due to this, the participants will be needed 2pm -5pm on the Saturday for technical rehearsal and again at 7pm for the performance. Every other day is 10am -4pm with a break for asked to bring their own lunch and snacks or to use the café and snack bar at Mareel.

Renowned dance theatre company, SHOTPUT, based in Glasgow, are travelling to Shetland to lead a 4-day intensive with young people. This will focus on dance, drama and film so if you have an interest in ANY or all of the above please come along to work with these specialists.

A youth arts intensive like no other! Jim Manganello and Lucy Ireland, SHOTPUT company directors, will lead Shetland’s young people (12 -18 yrs) through a 4-day intensive, finalising in a performance.

Lucy is a director, choreographer, and dancer originally from Edinburgh. She trained at The Royal Conservtaoire of Scotland and regularly teaches ballet at Dance Base, Scotland’s National centre for dance.

The week leading up to the performance of Ferguson and Barton, co-creators Lucy & Jim will work with the youth company in both dance and theatre to explore the themes and techniques they used to create the show. Loosely inspired by Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Ferguson and Barton is a show about communication and miscommunication, about voyeurism, gender roles, and sensuality. Can we ever really know the person closest to us? Would we want to?

Slanjayvah Danza are commonly known for crossing the borders of traditional and contemporary dance, music and storytelling. The company are touring their signature work, 6 Feet, 3 Shoes to Shetland as part of their Scottish tour. They are performing across Shetland during this week and will be bringing their popular music workshop to Mareel.

Suitable for adults and young people aged 14+

We use our hands, our body, our voices and our feet to create the beats for the company musicians who play along on fiddle, percussion and guitar. The dancers will be there to help everyone learn the rhythms, with easy patterns for everyone to enjoy. We will encourage and help you to create your own short pattern to play and dance with to the music.

Meet the performers - and dance with them!

After their performance in Mareel on Saturday night, Errol White and Davina Givan will lead the youth dancers of Shetland through a contemporary dance workshop. This workshop is designed for those who want to learn a little more about contemporary dance and improvisation - these critically acclaimed dance teachers will lead you through a fun and varied creative dance session to do just that.

Ages 12 - 19. Please bring water and wear comfortable clothing.
