SCREEN 2018

WELCOME... Welcome to the Screenplay Education Programme, now in its fifth year. This year we have films from Holland, Afghanistan, Chile, the USA, the UK and Israel, and some short films from all over the world. We also have two special guest speakers. Some of the films have been screened at the Dundee Discovery Film Festival for Young Audiences, where they were well received by children of all ages. The rest we programmed ourselves, looking to be as inclusive as we could – from pre-school to high school and all points inbetween! Like Discovery, our aim is to introduce young audiences to high quality film from around the world which they are unlikely to see in mainstream cinema, but which they will enjoy every bit as much. We also hope to increase children’s ability to analyse and reflect on what they have seen, rather than simply ‘consuming’ the blockbusters which Hollywood, Disney and Pixar feed them. This often involves them watching films with subtitles, but we have generally found that from the age of 8 upwards they have few problems with this. So once again we will be offering resource packs created by teachers and directly related to the Curriculum for Excellence that teachers can use in the classroom for four out of the eight films in this programme. Thanks for this Discovery! As with last year we are also offering schools the opportunity to stay on after the screening for a workshop related to the film they have just seen. These will last no longer than an hour, and facilities will be available for children to eat packed lunches should they bring them. Please let us know when you book if you would like to stay for the workshop. In two of the films we are offering, instead of a workshop, a Q&A session with the film maker, so pupils should come prepared to ask questions! We know that transport can be an issue for schools, and if it is, please let us know as we can help by offering one bus per school, and ferry fares and airfares for island based schools. As ever we would like to express our gratitude to the Discovery Film Festival for the ongoing inspiration and support we receive. This year we are particularly grateful to the Shetland branch of the EIS for its generous financial support of the programme, which meant we were able to extend the number of films we could offer – our sincere thanks to them. We are looking forward to watching these films along with you and your pupils at the end of August! Kathy Hubbard, Cara McDiarmid, Noelle Henderson & Liz Musser

KATHY

is the Screenplay Festival Director and Co-Curator. She is passionate to the point of being obsessive that children and young people should have access to the best cinema from around the world, and not just what Hollywood wants them to watch. Over the last five years of Screenplay she has been delighted to note how young audiences respond to these films, and just loves seeing the cinemas packed with young people.

CARA is the

Creative Project Manager at Shetland Arts, which allows her to plan lots of fun arts activities for the people of Shetland! She has been working on Screenplay since it began, and is so happy to be involved in the Education Programme again. She’s looking forward to all of the workshops and interesting discussions around the wonderful selection of films this year.

NOELLE didn’t

grow up wanting to be a Creative Links Officer but that’s what she’s been doing for the last few years for Shetland Islands Council. Making links and organising creative learning opportunities for schools to encourage young people to develop and apply their creativity skills: curiosity, open-mindedness, imagination and problem solving. The Screenplay Education films do all this!

LIZ is mad about

movies, and she is thrilled to be part of the Screenplay education team again this year. She started her career in broadcast news working at ABC stations in Missouri, Oklahoma, Florida and New York. Here in Shetland, she produces video and leads video production classes and workshops.

REVOLTING RHYMES

UK 2016 72 mins (including short film) Dirs. Jakob Schuh, Jan Lachauer Voiced by: Tamsin Greig, Dominic West, Rob Brydon, Rose Leslie MONDAY 27 AUGUST, 10am Blending together a selection of the most popular fairytales, Roald Dahl adds several twists and turns and a satisfying dash of gruesomeness to create a collection of classic tales with a very modern gloss. Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs all feature, popping up in each other’s tales as narrated by the nicely dastardly Dominic West as The Big Bad Wolf. The film is in two parts so we’ve put a little treat in-between... Themes: Friendship, rivalries, patience and resilience, doing what’s right The film has been classified as a PG, but some scenes may be unsuitable for very young children and would probably be most enjoyed by P2 and over. Resource pack available

THE BREADWINNER Ireland/Canada/Luxembourg 2017 94 mins Dir. Nora Twomey Voiced by: Saara Chaudry, Soma Chhaya, Noorin Gulamgaus TUESDAY 28 AUGUST, 10.30am From executive producer Angelina Jolie and the creators of the Academy Award nominated The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, comes the highly-anticipated new feature based on Deborah Ellis’ bestselling novel. Parvana is an 11-year-old girl growing up under the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. When her father is wrongfully arrested, Parvana cuts off her hair and dresses like a boy in order to support her family. Working alongside her friend Shauzia, Parvana discovers a new world of freedom – but also of danger. With undaunted courage, Parvana draws strength from the fantastical stories she invents, as she embarks on a quest to find her father and reunite her family. Equal parts thrilling and enchanting, but also unflinching in its depiction of family tragedy, The Breadwinner is an inspiring and luminously animated tale about the power of stories to sustain hope and carry us through dark times. Themes: courage in the face of adversity, intolerance, female empowerment, storytelling, resilience The film has a 12A certificate, but we recommend that it will appeal to P7 and early secondary pupils.

SHORTS FOR WEE ONES Various countries 2015-17 English or dialogue-free

NAE PASARAN 45 mins

TUESDAY 28 AUGUST, 10am The Discovery Film Festival’s collection of short films have become a popular staple of Screenplay. This year they bring short films from a host of countries including Sweden, France, Russia, Germany and Switzerland. Our old friend The Little Bird is back with a new pal (as well as a sly fox), we watch a hungry tiger find a tasty meal (and eat his carrots) and we learn how a big old bear finds his singing voice. A little boy has to save an adventurous fish during a water shortage, and someone desperate to go to sleep learns that there is music all around – whether he likes it or not! All these short films are in English or are dialogue-free (except for one with one word of German – and it’s very easy to understand!). Themes: Trying out new things, going on adventures, making friends, learning to get along, storytelling, doing the right thing These magical tales are a colourful introduction to the cinema experience as well as to moving image literacy. They should delight children aged 3+, so should be suitable for pre-school pupils and P1 - 3s. Resource pack available

UK/Chile 2018 96 mins + 30 mins Q&A Director/Producer: Felipe Bustos Sierra Some Subtitling TUESDAY 28 AUGUST, 11.15am Documentary. 1974, Scotland. Bob Fulton, a Rolls-Royce engine inspector, returns to his section, upset and anxious. He’s just told his colleagues that a Chilean Air Force jet engine has arrived in the factory for maintenance and he’s refusing to let it go through, in protest against the recent military coup of General Pinochet. He’s seen the images of people packed into football stadiums and the Chilean Air Force jets bombing Santiago, and now one of the engines from those very same planes is right there, waiting for inspection. When the Scottish workers saw the images of the 1973 raid on The Palacio de la Moneda on television, they knew immediately they’d worked on these engines. All Hawker Hunter engines were repaired in the same factory: Rolls-Royce East Kilbride. With nowhere else to go for maintenance, their boycott could be seriously damaging for the Chilean Air Force. This is the affecting account of the impact of the workers’ action; it also tells the stories of the many Chileans who crossed paths with the engines, in devastating ways. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director, Felipe Bustos Sierra. Themes: Standing by your principles, industrial relations, international politics, trade union history, human rights abuses, making a difference We believe it will be most suitable for S4 - S6 pupils, particularly those doing 20th century history or modern studies.

ABULELE Israel 2015 98 mins Dir. Jonathan Geva Starring: Yoav Sadian, Idan Barkai, Bar Minali Subtitled WEDNESDAY 29 AUGUST, 10am Ancient legends warn children about the Abulele: enormous, furry and sometimes dangerous creatures who are able to hide among the human race by making themselves invisible to everyone except those they choose to be seen by. Adam, a young boy grieving the loss of his brother, discovers an Abulele living in his building; gradually, they become friends. But gun-toting Special Forces appear on the trail of his new friend. Will Adam risk everything to save his big friendly giant? This is an E.T. for the 21st century, a classic tale of innocence and friendship facing up to threats posed by the adult world. It is also an affecting study of a family fractured by grief, who gain the comfort and the love they need from a most unlikely source. It has a terrific young cast, marvellous moments of humour and an extremely hairy, green-eyed, popguzzling monster who we would all like as a friend. What’s not to love? Themes: fitting in, loneliness, unusual friendships, grief, facing up to challenges, the triumph of the child, letting go. We recommend that this will appeal most to P5 - S1 pupils. Resource pack available

ALFIE, THE LITTLE WEREWOLF Netherlands 2011 90 mins Dir. Joram Lürsen Starring: Ole Kroes, Maas Bronkhuyzen, Remko Vrijdad, Kim Van Kooten Subtitled THURSDAY 30 AUGUST, 10am Baby Alfie is left in a basket on the doorstep of the Vriends family. They adopt him and treat him as their own. Their firstborn son Timmie is the perfect devoted big brother. On his seventh birthday, Alfie experiences something strange and alarming: the full moon causes him to turn into a werewolf until dawn. He tells his brother but they decide to hide it from their parents. When Alfie, in his werewolf identity, raids his next door neighbour’s chicken-coop, she alerts a grim, anti-alien society which starts a hunt for the strange beast. The school’s Christmas play, Peter and the Wolf, helps the brothers cover up, but they can’t resist putting class bully Nico in his place. Meanwhile Alfie feels drawn to a mysterious stranger, who watches over him and seems to know all about him. This is a film about embracing difference, with Alfie as the most endearing werewolf that you can imagine (apart from his raid on the neighbour’s hens, that is …). The cast give it their comic all, but there is a serious point here about loyalty and about embracing difference. Themes: family support, sibling loyalty, coping with change, acceptance of difference. We recommend that this will appeal most to P4 - P7 pupils. Resource pack available

WALLACE & GROMIT: STEP THE CURSE OF THE USA 2017 84 mins Dir. Amanda Lipitz WERE-RABBIT Starring: Gari McIntyre, Amanda Leonard, Blessin Giraldo, Brooke Giraldo, Cori Grainger UK 2005 85 mins + 6 mins + 30 min Q&A Dirs. Steve Box, Nick Park Voiced by: Peter Sallis, Helena Bonham Carter & Ralph Fiennes FRIDAY 31 AUGUST, 10am With only days to go before the town’s annual Giant Vegetable Competition, business is booming for Wallace and Gromit’s humane pest-control company, ‘AntiPesto’. But running such a business turns out to have its drawbacks as their West Wallaby Street home fills to the brim with captive rabbits. Suddenly, a huge, mysterious, veg-ravaging “beast” begins attacking the town’s sacred vegetable plots at night, and the competition hostess, Lady Tottington, commissions Anti-Pesto to catch it and save the day. Lying in wait, however, is Lady Tottington’s snobby suitor, Victor Quartermaine, who’d rather shoot the beast and secure the position of local hero - not to mention Lady Tottingon’s hand in marriage. With the fate of the competition in the balance, Lady Tottington is eventually forced to allow Victor to hunt down the vegetablechomping marauder. Little does she know that Victor’s real intent could have dire consequences for her ...and for our two heroes. It has a U cert and is suitable for all primary pupils. This screening will be preceded by one of Aardman Animation’s earliest short films, Creature Comforts, and followed by a Q&A with the director, Nick Park. Come along with lots of questions to ask!

MONDAY 3 SEPTEMBER, 10am Documentary. “… a soaring, heart-bursting portrait of a group of intrepid Baltimore high school students guaranteed to bring audiences to their feet - whether out of vicarious triumph, overpowering pure emotion, or simply to pay tribute to the superheroines at the core of its infectiously inspiring story”. Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post STEP chronicles the senior year of a girls’ high-school step dance team against the background of inner-city Baltimore. These young women find a unity through their team that pushes them to challenge themselves on and off the stage. Empowered by their teachers, teammates, counsellors, coaches and families, they chase their ultimate dreams: to win a step championship and to be accepted into college. This all female school is reshaping the futures of its students’ lives by making it their goal to have every member of their senior class accepted to and graduate from college, many of whom will be the first in their family to do so. Emotionally inspiring, STEP embodies the true meaning of sisterhood through a story of courageous young women worth cheering for, and the truly extraordinary and dedicated teachers who are rooting for them all the way. Themes: Teamwork, overcoming challenge, female empowerment, Black Lives Matter, the importance of education Certificated as a PG, this film is likely to appeal most to P6, P7 and Secondary pupils.
