JOIN US! We are delighted here at Shetland Arts to welcome two new curators for Fiddle Frenzy 2016, to bring their own flavour to the programme of our annual celebration of Shetland fiddle.

Lynda Anderson

Operations Manager, Shetland Arts

 We’re both very excited about curating Fiddle Frenzy. It's been a pleasure and privilege to tutor and perform in previous years, and now it's great fun designing a whole week of culture for participants. We're very much looking forward to welcoming you all to Shetland in August!

Eunice Henderson & Claire White

Fiddle Frenzy curators

Claire White is an awardwinning singer songwriter and fiddler from Lerwick. She learned music from Dr Tom Anderson and has been performing and teaching internationally for the past twenty-five years. Claire’s current line-ups include Blyde Lasses, Hjaltibonhoga, Danse McCabre and Jingbang. When not making music, Claire produces Out of Doors on BBC Radio Scotland.

Eunice is a full-time itinerant Traditional Fiddle instructor employed by the Shetland Islands Council since 1991, now into her 25th year! Brought up in a very musical family it was not uncommon for Eunice to find herself sharing a tune in her parents house with the likes of Mark O'Connor and Graham Townsend. Her fiddle students have consistently achieved excellent results at Shetland's Young Fiddler of the Year. Eunice currently teaches the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Young Fiddler winners of the 2016 competition.

Spend a week immersed in Shetland’s Musical Culture & Community Shetland is well known for its unique fiddle tradition which dates back hundreds of years. A blend of Scandinavian and Scottish styles, the Shetland sound is characterised by evocative melodies and driving rhythms. Regionally-specific island repertoires have developed over centuries of migration, and the tradition continues to evolve in new and exciting ways today. Many Shetland players have recently forged professional careers for themselves in music, and fiddle tuition in the islands has never been more extensive.

For one week each year, Fiddle Frenzy opens Shetland's doors for everyone to learn fiddle in the islands themselves. This is a unique, immersive experience which encompasses not only music, but all of Shetland's rich culture. Visit the places which have inspired tunes, meet the tradition bearers, experience the ever-changing weather, knit Fair Isle, make a Shetland stool, enjoy a dram with locals, lose yourself in a late night session. We've put together a programme which will transport you to a week of puffins, ponies, beaches, archaeology, geology and endless skies. Welcome aboard!

Workshops

Shetland Fiddle Three levels of fiddle tuition are available at Fiddle Frenzy, to cater for a range of abilities. Please note none of our classes are suitable for complete beginners. All classes are taught mainly by ear, although music can be provided to you on request. You may want to bring a recording device with you for classes. All music will be given to you at the end of the week.

Improver

You should be able to play a few tunes without much hesitation, and have had some experience learning by ear.

Intermediate

You should feel at ease playing several tunes at a medium speed, and feel quite comfortable learning by ear.

Advanced

You should be very confident at playing more technical tunes and be able to play at a quick tempo. Ideally, you should be keen on learning by ear.

Debbie Scott

Catriona Macdonald

Debbie Scott is a wellknown and respected player, composer and tutor. She played with the late Peerie Willie Johnson with whom she recorded her first album at the age of 16. He also appeared on her eponymous 1999 album. Her award winning compositions are played and recorded the world over.

Saturday Sets All students are invited to perform at the final Saturday evening concert. Two sets of tunes will be chosen by Fiddle Frenzy curators, Eunice and Claire, which we refer to as the ‘Saturday Sets’. Workshops

Ewen Balfour

Creative Fringe Creative Fringe workshops at Fiddle Frenzy are a collection of Shetland craft experiences which deepen your connection with the islands' natural environment and rich handwork traditions. Activities include studio tours and workshops in glass, ceramics, textiles and carpentry. You'll leave Shetland with a suitcase full of unique pieces produced by your own hands across the week! The Creative Fringe is run by Shetlandbased artists Amy Colvin and Ana Arnett in collaboration with specialist local tutors. Creative Fringe classes can be booked as Full, Half or Day Frenzy packages.

AMY COLVIN & ANA ARNETT Amy and Ana both left Shetland to complete BA(Hons) Degrees, Ana in Sculpture at Glasgow School of Art and Ana (left) & Amy (right) Amy, Painting at Grays School of Art. Their similar approach to teaching and their personal practice has led to them delivering a range of workshops together and collaborating on personal projects also. Their laid back approach makes for fun and inclusive workshops.

Ewen is a keen Shetland basketmaker and was first introduced to the craft by Lowrie Copland who taught him to make a kishie (traditional straw basket) at his winter nightclass. He continues to explore the use of various materials in baskets and hopes you can join him for some early morning mouse making.

Barbara Johnson Barbara Johnson is an award-winning knitter from Scalloway. From 1959 to 1970 she checked garments produced by local knitters for the Shetland Woollen Manufacturing Company. Since then, she has concentrated on hand knitting, specialising in Fair Isle. She currently produces items for Scalloway Museum and looks forward to assisting beginner and experienced knitters during Fiddle Frenzy.
