Despicable Me 2 3D & 2D
Before Midnight
Showing from Fri 28 June Tickets on sale from Tues 25 June
Showing from Fri 5 July Tickets on sale from Tues 2 July
Gru and his minions are recruited to trounce an evil supervillain in this hilarious sequel. Last time we met shiny-domed, pointy-nosed, spindly-legged megalomaniac Gru (Steve Carell), he was tamed by a trio of adorable orphan girls. But Gru’s life of happy domesticity as an adoptive father isn’t going to last. He’s abducted by Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) of the AntiVillain League and whisked to the organisation’s HQ in her cool underwater car. Here the League’s supremo, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan), explains that Gru’s detailed knowledge of the evil mind is needed to help defeat a sinister new supervillain named Eduardo (Al Pacino). What’s more, he’ll get to play with lots of great new gadgets and weapons! Expect to see plenty more of Gru’s scene-stealing little yellow minions too.
Nine years after Before Sunset, the final episode in Richard Linklater’s trilogy retains its core simplicity: two lovers discuss their lives and love during a single day. Co-writers Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are the now very grown-up Paris-based couple, but here we find them holidaying in Greece and pondering their future – and that of their twin girls, born since we last met the pair. Long takes and extended dialogue allow the development of the characters full rein, Hawke and Delpy admirably conveying the subtleties of a durable but far from uncomplicated union which constantly reminds us of the challenges – and rewards – of keeping such a partnership alive. This time there are additional characters helping to broaden the narrative, but ultimately it’s the two main protagonists who carry Before Midnight, and do so with utter conviction.

Behind the Candelabra
Our Children
Showing from Fri 5 July Tickets on sale from Tues 2 July
Showing from Fri 5 July Tickets on sale from Tues 2 July
Before Elvis, Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was Liberace - infamous pianist, outrageous entertainer and star of stage and television. A name synonymous with showmanship, he lit up every stage he performed on, as bright as his candelabras and with a unique flair that gained him millions of devoted fans across the globe. In the summer of 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson walked into Liberace’s dressing room and, despite their age difference, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair. To the outside world Scott was an employee, at most a friend, but behind closed doors his life with Liberace was an intense rollercoaster of hedonistic fun and excess. Starring Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as Scott Thorson, Behind The Candelabra tells the fascinating true story of their glamorous life together and their tempestuous relationship.
French language film with English subtitles. Young, effervescent and full of life, Murielle (Emilie Dequenne) has a promising future ahead of her when she meets and falls head over heels for Mounir (Tahar Rahim). A wedding soon follows, and the happy couple quickly set about preparing to make a family. However, with family comes ties, and none come as tight as that between Mounir and his adoptive father Dr Pinget (Niels Arestrup). As Murielle continues to bring new life into the family, in the form of four children, frictions between Mounir and Dr Pinget reach boiling point. Helpless to extract her husband and children from the wealthy nest that Dr Pinget has provided for them, Murielle is drawn into an unhealthy family dynamic. Within this oppressive environment, Murielle becomes trapped and all sense of reasoning begins to abandon her.

Monsters University 3D & 2D Showing from Fri 12 July Tickets on sale from Tues 9 July Disney Pixar’s much anticipated sequel to the animated hit Monsters Inc. Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer - and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voiced by John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-ofcontrol competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.

Much Ado About Nothing Showing from Fri 12 July Tickets on sale from Tues 9 July Shot much in the spirit of the stage play on which it’s based, Joss Whedon’s version of Shakespeare’s comedic play was filmed in his Santa Monica mansion in just 12 days. The simplicity of the production is enhanced by the decision to shoot in monochrome and to retain much of Shakespeare’s dialogue, although its more flowery corners have been rounded off by Whedon’s script in deference to modern (and younger) ears. That strategy is further supported by a cast of mainly young TV actors from Whedon’s unofficial repertory company. A pacey, amusing work that even Shakespeare-phobes will find engaging.
Now You See Me Showing from Fri 12 July Tickets on sale from Tues 9 July Four master illusionists (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, and Dave Franco) are hired by a shadowy Michael Caine to execute spectacular bank robberies, to rather surprising ends. The FBI and Interpol (in the guises of Mark Ruffalo and Mélanie Laurent) are on their case, but despite the help of Morgan Freeman as a debunker of the magician’s art, they are constantly duped by the utterly likeable villains. Director Louis Leterrier deploys special effects with breathtaking zeal, while the cunning narrative and imaginatively chosen cast are all highly entertaining – and, given the premise and its intricacies, surprisingly credible. But then Now You See Me is much more than it appears.
Summer in February Showing from Fri 12 July Tickets on sale from Tues 9 July Summer in February is the intimate, enchanting true story of young souls navigating their way through love and friendship in the picturesque landscape of early twentieth century England. The film focuses on the bohemian Lamorna Group, dominated by the charismatic AJ Munnings (Dominic Cooper). Munnings, now regarded as one of Britain’s most sought-after artists, is at the heart of a complex love triangle, involving the young aspiring painter Florence Carter-Wood (Emily Browning) and Gilbert Evans (Dan Stevens), the land agent in charge of the Lamorna estate. The story is played out against the timeless beauty of the Cornish coast, in the far West of England, beyond the reach of London and its stifling conventions.

Springsteen &I
The Iceman
Showing from Fri 19 July
Showing from Fri 19 July Tickets on sale from Tues 16 July
Tickets on sale from Tues 16 July Documentary. Director Baillie Walsh has pulled together some of the most exciting and often previously unseen live footage of Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band, to celebrate 40 years of Springsteen at the top of his game. Aided by numerous interviews with fans whose lives have been changed or made meaningful by ‘The Boss’, Springsteen & I builds into a compelling and uplifting portrayal of a generation, whose hopes, fears and resolve to have a good time are embodied in the great man’s music. With documentaries and promotional videos featuring Oasis, INXS and Massive Attack under his belt, Walsh has excellent form in the field, and with Ridley Scott backing and co-producing the film, Springsteen & I is destined to become one of the landmark music films of our times.
The Iceman is the story of real-life mob hitman Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski, who was reportedly responsible for over 200 murders. Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon) and his wife Deborah (Winona Ryder) appear to have a model American life, living with their children in an idyllic suburban ranch house. But unbeknownst to Deborah and the kids, when Kuklinski goes off to work, he is carrying out executions at the behest of the Gambino crime family, employing a wide variety of deadly methods that make it difficult to trace all the fatalities to a single killer. The Iceman shows the development of Kuklinski’s career from the 1950s through the 1980s, chronicling his friendship with Gambino soldato Roy DeMeo (Ray Liotta), his mentorship under assassin Robert “Mister Softee” Pronge (Chris Evans), and his troubled relationship with his brother Joseph (Stephen Dorff).

The World’s End Showing from Fri 19 July Tickets on sale from Tues 16 July Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. In The World’s End, 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by Gary King (Simon Pegg), a 40-year-old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their hometown and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub - The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realise the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

E.T. the ExtraTerrestrial Showing from Fri 26 July Tickets on sale from Tues 23 July The mystery. The suspense. The adventure. The call... that started it all. When an alien (E.T.) is inadvertently left behind on earth, he finds refuge with youngster Elliott (Henry Thomas). As Elliott and E.T. bond as friends, it soon becomes clear that E.T. must find his way home before government officials capture him for study. Together, E.T., Elliott and Elliott’s family and friends help reunite E.T. with his spaceship. A family classic directed by Steven Spielberg.
Thérèse Desqueyroux Showing from Fri 26 July Tickets on sale from Tues 23 July French language film with English subtitles. The scions of two wealthy Bordeaux families, Thérèse (Audrey Tautou) and Bernard (Gilles Lellouche), join together in a marriage of political and financial convenience in 1920s France. But although attracted by the prospect of secure affluence, Thérèse finds herself increasingly at odds with her boorish, indecisive husband. Her sister-in-law’s scandalous affair with an outsider to their privileged little world, followed by the birth of a child she cannot love, add to Thérèse’s dissatisfaction, eventually prompting actions which have tragic consequences.

Pacific Rim 3D & 2D Showing from Fri 26 July Tickets on sale from Tues 23 July When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenceless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes - a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
