PRIDE On sale now, showing from: Fri 19 Sep It’s 1984 and the Miners’ Strike is causing great hardship, especially in one remote Welsh pit village. Despite some misgivings, a group of young gay activists led by bolshy Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) decide to raise money for the community, but when they travel down to deliver the funds they’re unprepared for the homophobia that greets them. However, it transpires that a taciturn village elder (Bill Nighy) has long been in the closet, and the strikers’ wives, headed by Imelda Staunton’s no-nonsense Helfina, are both grateful and curious. In only his second film, noted theatre director Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical) expertly finesses knowing humour, indignation and sexual politics, while the performances are uniformly pitch-perfect.

When Hassan and his family, led by Papa (Om Puri), move to a quaint village in the South of France with the grand plan of opening an Indian restaurant in the picturesque countryside, they are undeterred by the fact that only 100 feet opposite stands a Michelin starred classical French eatery. However upon encountering the icy proprietress, Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), the Kadam family realise they may have bitten off more than they can chew. Outraged by the new arrivals, Madame Mallory is determined to have their business shut down. As cultures clash and food flies, an all-out war escalates between the two establishments - until, that is, Hassan’s passion and talent for French cuisine begin to enchant Madame Mallory and even she can’t deny this young chef could have what it takes to garner even more acclaim for her beloved restaurant.

When Allied forces liberated the Nazi concentration camps in 1944-45, their terrible discoveries were recorded by army and newsreel cameramen, revealing for the first time the full horror of what had happened. Making use of British, Soviet and American footage, the Ministry of Information’s Sidney Bernstein (later founder of Granada Television) aimed to create a documentary that would provide lasting, undeniable evidence of the Nazis’ unspeakable crimes. He commissioned a wealth of British talent, including editor Stewart McAllister, writer and future cabinet minister Richard Crossman - and, as treatment advisor, his friend Alfred Hitchcock. Yet, despite initial support from the British and US Governments, the film was shelved, and only now, 70 years on, has it been restored and completed by Imperial War Museums. This eloquent, lucid documentary by Andre Singer (executive producer of the award-winning The Act of Killing) tells the extraordinary story of the filming of the camps and the fate of Bernstein’s project, using original archive footage and eyewitness testimonies.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 3D & 2D Showing from: Fri 17 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 8 Oct
PREVIEW SCREENINGS FROM 11-16 OCTOBER! 14 years after their last outing, the extraordinary teenage mutant ninja turtles are back to excite a new generation of superhero fans. We find our hitherto retired ‘heroes on the half-shell’ back in town where lifestyle TV reporter April O’Neil (Megan Fox) can’t persuade her boss (Whoopi Goldberg) that she’s worthy of handling hard news. Suspecting that the notorious Foot Clan are up to their evil plans again, she tracks down their old foes the mutated turtles and rodent mentor, Splinter, to take them on and report the outcome. Director Jonathan Liebesman cleverly allies animated action and motioncapture technology to the latest VFX, which elevates TMNT well above its noble predecessors. Plus, it’s rowdy good fun.

Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only pool-mate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behaviour requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

FURY Showing from: Fri 24 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 15 Oct
ATILA MARCEL Showing from: Fri 24 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 15 Oct French language film with English subtitles. Attila Marcel is the charming live-action debut from acclaimed director Sylvain Chomet (Belleville Rendez-Vous, The Illusionist). Paul (Guillaume Gouix), a thirty something Parisian, lives with his two aunts, two old aristocrats who have raised him since the age of two. Living his aunts’ dream of becoming a virtuoso pianist, Paul’s life is stuck in the same daily routine - cut off from the world, devoid of vitality. After a fateful encounter with his eccentric neighbour, Madame Proust (Anne Le Ny), Paul unearths his most deeply buried memories, and the key to living his own life at last.
PREVIEW SCREENINGS FROM 22 OCTOBER! (TBC) Brad Pitt’s second WW2 film is a far more visceral, indeed credible exercise: starring as ‘Wardaddy,’ he’s commanding the crew of an outgunned, inadequately armoured Sherman tank slogging through Europe toward the war’s end. His battle-weary crew includes Shia LaBeouf, Jon Bernthal, Logan Lerman as a naïve rookie, and as a perpetual drunk, Michael Peña. Ayer makes it clear this isn’t about the glory of victory, for as Wardaddy says, “You think it can’t get any worse, and then it does”, and the relentless battle scenes – filmed with murky, muddy realism in Britain – only confirm that. The fearful claustrophobia of tank warfare has never been better realised.

EFFIE GRAY Showing from: Fri 24 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 15 Oct
THE BOOK OF LIFE 3D & 2D Showing from: Fri 24 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 15 Oct The Book of Life is the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favourites, The Book of Life encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.
It’s been a long time coming, but Emma Thompson’s incisive screenplay about the troubled relationship between Victorian art critic John Ruskin and his teenage bride Euphemia ‘Effie’ Gray proves well worth the wait. Thompson herself plays author Lady Elizabeth Eastlake, who supports Effie through a scandalous court case that turns on the question of whether the Ruskins’ loveless marriage has been consummated. With the Crimean War gnawing away in the background, and an exceptionally strong cast that includes Robbie Coltrane, Derek Jacobi, Claudia Cardinale, and Tom Sturridge as the Pre-Raphaelite Millais – with whom Effie falls in love – Effie Gray confirms director Laxton as a master of cinematic biography.

Coraline Jones is bored in her new home until she finds a secret door and discovers an alternative version of her life on the other side. On the surface, this parallel reality is eerily similar to her real life and the people in it - only much better. IDA Showing from: Fri 31 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 22 Oct Polish language film with English subtitles. Seamlessly weaving together the deeply resonant narratives of two wonderfully realized characters, Ida is a beautifully filmed meditation on identity set in Poland in 1962.18-year old Anna (stunning newcomer Agata Trzebuchowska), a sheltered orphan raised in a convent, is preparing to become a nun when the Mother Superior insists she first visit her sole living relative. Naive, innocent Anna soon finds herself in the presence of her aunt Wanda (Agata Kulesza), a worldly and cynical Communist Party insider, who shocks her with the declaration that her real name is Ida and her Jewish parents were murdered during the Nazi occupation. This revelation triggers a heart-wrenching journey into the countryside, to the family house and into the secrets of the repressed past, evoking the haunting legacy of the Holocaust and the realities of postwar Communism.
A DANGEROUS GAME Showing from: Fri 31 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 22 Oct In this sequel to the award-winning You’ve Been Trumped, director Anthony Baxter once again follows American billionaire Donald Trump and a cast of others who want to turn places into golf courses and playgrounds for the super rich. From the historic site of Dubrovnik to the ancient sand dunes and rolling green hills of the seaside town of Balmedie, these tycoons influence governments and meddle in national environmental policies to acquire their latest trophies. With in-depth interviews and Baxter’s expert storytelling, we learn just how devastating these golf courses can be to the surrounding countryside and water tables. In this funny, inspiring and at times heartbreaking David and Goliath story for the 21st century, the locals don’t give in easily. But will their fight be enough to protect their land and traditional way of life?
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Showing from: Fri 31 Oct Tickets on sale: Wed 22 Oct HALLOWEEN SPECIAL DRESS-UP SCREENING!
A decade of wisecracking sequels have not diminished the power of this striking horror film. Teenagers in a small town are dropping like flies, apparently in the grip of a mass hysteria that is causing their suicides. A cop’s daughter (Heather Langenkamp) traces the cause to child molester Fred Krueger (Robert Englund), who was burned alive by angry parents many years before. Krueger has now come back in the dreams of his killers’ children, claiming their lives as his revenge. Wes Craven creates moments of real dread by examining the line between nightmares and reality, as well as the ‘sins of the parents’ theme, and although the film is quite gory, it never resorts to cheap bloodletting for its effect. A unique and disturbing experience.
