MUSIC COURSE INFORMATION Place of study: Mareel, Lerwick Mode of study: Full-time or part-time Length of course: Full-time: one year, part-time: 2 years Start date: August 2015 Entry requirements: 1 Scottish Higher at grade C or above. You will be asked to attend an audition/ interview to assess your musical ability. Applications will also be welcomed from holders of other awards and qualifications deemed comparable to those above. Applications from students without qualifications but who demonstrate the appropriate level of ability, interest and commitment are also welcomed.

COURSE CONTENT Core projects include:

 Producing and promoting a commercial recording through the HNC Music ‘Battery Park’ Record Label.

 Composition project based on a Creative Brief leading to a public presentation of work.

 Producing a music video. COURSE SUMMARY

 Organising a series of live music events.

The course focuses on the practical skills and knowledge required to develop a career, or progress to further study, in the music business or related industries.

The course is underpinned by studies in subjects including music technology, Creative Industries Infrastructure and self-employment skills.

Mareel is a working venue with cutting-edge facilities ensuring that you will gain valuable industry insight and have access to professional facilities on which to develop your skills. Through a series of practical and creative projects, you will refine your musical and technical proficiency, compositional skills and professional practice. All genres of music are welcome: previous students have specialised in styles from traditional fiddle to electronic dance music.

HOW WILL I STUDY? You will study in Mareel by way of: lectures and tutorials delivered in the iMac equipped Media Lab, practical work in the rehearsal rooms and recording studio, and live performances in the auditorium and café bar. All subjects are supported by extensive use of online learning resources.

PROGRESSION Academic: HND or Degree level studies in music or related subjects. Employment/career: A wide range of Creative Industry occupations (inc. teaching, technical production, performance, composition and music business).
