SCREEN S H E TL A N D ’S ANNUAL FIL M FEST IVA L 30 AUG - 8 SEP 20 1 9
WELCOME Welcome to the 13th edition of the Screenplay Film Festival! With Kathy Hubbard stepping down after last year’s festival, we have a new co-curator in the shape of Shetland Arts’ Film Programme Manager Jenny Leask. She’s thrilled, if a little daunted, to be taking on the programming of Screenplay alongside year-round screenings at Mareel, and, as always, her mission is to include something for everyone. This year, as well as family films and our old faithful Look North strand, we’ve added Look South, showcasing four great films from Australia and New Zealand. Also new this festival is Women’s Work, a strand of films made by women. With many festivals rightly getting a hard time for not including many female-directed films, we’re proud that more than 50% of the feature films in this year’s programme are fully or co-directed by women. And this isn’t just about tokenism - these are brilliant, risk-taking, entertaining pieces of cinema! Two of this year’s guests have films in the Women’s Work strand - Jeanie Finlay, who has been directing striking, thoughtful and intimate documentaries since 2007, and is here with not one but two brand new films; and Harry Wootliff, whose nuanced and moving debut feature Only You was recently released to rave reviews. We’re also delighted that actor and comedian Sanjeev Bhaskar is making the trip north, to talk about his scene-stealing turn in our opening film Yesterday as well as his long career in television and film.
We’re thrilled to be hosting a touring production from the brilliant Hippodrome Silent Film Festival in Bo’ness; 1922 drama Rob Roy will feature live accompaniment from multi-instrumentalist David Allison. And Home Made is, of course, back - a gloriously eclectic programme of sub-4-minute films made by local filmmakers, plus a bonus screening of Shetland actress Marnie Baxter’s directorial debut. And to get you started on making your own contribution to next year’s festival, we’ve two filmmaking workshops, one on documentary and the other on stop-motion animation. As always, a huge thank you goes to the organisations and individuals who contribute the time, money, expertise and cake that make Screenplay happen - we really couldn’t do it without you. Now, on with the films - enjoy! Mark Kermode, Linda Ruth Williams & Jenny Leask P.S. New this year is the Screenplay Audience Award - we want to know what you think of the films you’re watching, so look out for voting forms at screenings!
Screenplay films and events do get very busy so pre-booking is recommended, visit our box office at Mareel or Sumburgh Airport, on shetlandarts.org or phone 01595 745500. Films will start no later than five minutes after their advertised start time – please ensure you take your seat in plenty of time. Some films haven’t been certificated by the BBFC but instead we’ve given them a recommended certificate, which works in the same way as an official one – please remember to bring I.D. if coming to 15 or 18 certificate films, or 12As if unaccompanied by an adult.
Tickets can be purchased for individual films or, if you want to see and experience as much of the festival as you can, then a Screencard is for you, giving you entry into all Screenplay film screenings, subject to availability, plus an invitation to join our guests at the festival reception!

It is an intimate, audacious and lyrical story about conception, pregnancy, birth, and what makes us who we are.

FILMS WITH GUESTS GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH Dir Jeanie Finlay USA 2019, 1h59, Recommended Cert 18 Documentary For a year, filmmaker Jeanie Finlay was embedded on the set of the hit HBO series Game of Thrones, chronicling the creation of the show’s most ambitious and complicated season.
“Beautiful, epic, and heartfelt.” - Indiewire Game of Thrones: The Last Watch delves deep into the mud and blood to reveal the tears and triumphs involved in the challenge of bringing the fantasy world of Westeros to life in the very real studios, fields and car-parks of Northern Ireland. Much more than a ‘making of’ documentary, this is a funny, heartbreaking story, told with wit and intimacy, about the bittersweet pleasures of what it means to create a world – and then have to say goodbye to it.
JEANIE FINLAY Jeanie Finlay is one of Britain’s most distinctive documentary makers. Her acclaimed films tell intimate stories to international audiences, whether inviting them behind the scenes of Teesside’s last record shop (Sound It Out), to share the extraordinary journey of a British transgender man, pregnant with his child (Seahorse), or onto the set of the world’s biggest television show (Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch). Her films, although varied in subject matter, are all made with steel and heart, sharing an empathetic approach to bringing overlooked and untold stories to the screen. She describes her approach as being interested in "Shy people, telling small stories, quietly". Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch is her eighth feature film.

WOMEN’S WORK SCHEME BIRDS Dir Ellen Fiske, Ellinor Hallin Sweden 2018, 1h35, Recommended cert 15 Documentary A beautifully tender documentary about a Scottish teenager. Gemma lives with her grandfather, who has raised her since she was abandoned by her mother, in Jerviston, a Livingston housing scheme where you “either get knocked up or locked up,” where there’s been nothing to do since Margaret Thatcher closed the local steelworks in the 1980s. Everyone finds a distraction to stay out of trouble: Papa keeps pigeons and teaches boxing, the kids drink and commit petty crime, and Gemma finds motherhood. Thanks to the sensitivity of the filmmakers and Gemma’s strong personality, there is a clear strand of hope in this absorbing story of survival.

LOOK SOUTH BLUDGEON Dir Andy Deere, Ryan Heron New Zealand 2019, 1h35, Recommended cert 15 Documentary A warm-hearted and charmingly offbeat documentary about a group of modern knights competing to represent New Zealand in the brutal sport of medieval combat. His quest for glory takes him from Rotorua to Taranaki, where he is set to try out for the number one-ranked Kiwi team, the Steel Thorns. Will Nick have what it takes to make it in this highly competitive sport?
Join us outside Mareel from 4.45pm on Sunday 1 September, when Vikingr Hjaltlandi, Shetland’s own Full Contact Medieval Combat club, will be demonstrating their skills!

LOOK SOUTH SWINGING SAFARI Dir Stephan Elliott Australia 2018, 1h42, Cert 15 Cast: Guy Pearce, Kylie Minogue, Radha Mitchell, Atticus Robb, Darcey Wilson. An outrageous and hilarious comedy from Stephan Elliott, director of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, featuring a tremendous cast including Guy Pearce and Kylie Minogue.
1970s Australia. A 200-ton blue whale washes up on a local beach and the kids think it’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened. Behind closed doors, the Mums and Dads of this quiet suburban cul-de-sac celebrate in their own special way, by joining the sexual revolution. It’s a time of boxed wine, bad hair, bad styles, bad choices, but good times. And like the rotting whale, it’s all about to go spectacularly wrong.
“ Elliott celebrates Australian identity with
genuine love while simultaneously roasting it over the coals of no-holds-barred satire and parody.” - Variety

In English and Arabic with English subtitles. A rambunctious, heartwarming David and Goliath comedy from Australia. Bodgy Creek is a struggling town. The drought won’t let up, jobs are scarce and the footy team looks like it will either have to merge with another club or fold. Former football star Troy Carrington is coaxed into rescuing the team by young Neil, who is struggling with the recent loss of his father. Teaming up with Neil’s mum Angie who runs a nearby refugee support centre, they unite to recruit the new arrivals to save the team – but this proves to be an unpopular move with some residents.

LOOK SOUTH MEGA TIME SQUAD Dir Tim van Dammen New Zealand 2018, 1h31, Cert 18 Cast: Anton Tennet, Jonny Brugh, Hetty Gaskall-Haan, Arlo Gibson, Milo Cawthorne. A deliciously daft and wildly entertaining time travel/sci-fi comedy. John, a low-level criminal from the small town of Thames in New Zealand, unknowingly steals an ancient Chinese time-travel device. Before he realises the ramifications of his newfound ability to leap to and fro along the timeline, he’s
inadvertently amassed a small army of doppelgängers. What else is an ambitious hooligan to do but form a gang of ‘himselves’ in hopes that it might even the odds against Shelton, the aggrieved crime lord who’s gunning for him?

SPECIAL EVENTS MADE AT HOME Programmed by Maya Darrell Hewins 20mins Recommended cert 12A The ever popular Home Made programme at Screenplay gives Shetland filmmakers of all ages a great opportunity to exhibit their work. Shetlanders, however, have been creating amazing films for much longer than the existence of Homemade and Screenplay. This free and ongoing programme showcases some of these films. Films featured date from the 1940s up to the early 2000s, and come from local people or their relations. They were made using different technologies and methods of recording – including 8mm, Super 8mm, 9mm and 16mm celluloid film and VHS tapes – but have many similarities. For example, most of these films were made by people in their spare time – as a hobby or on a ‘non-professional’ basis, often
among their family and friends. Commonly they are called home-movies! As you shall see, the subjects people chose to film relate to the land, sea and environment, family gatherings and celebrations, leisure activities and special local events such as parades and regattas. This material has been donated to the Shetland Film Archive, a community-led voluntary-run organisation, which aims to collect, digitise and catalogue the work of Shetland filmmakers and moving image artists, use its collection to increase the recognition of Shetland’s unique heritage and to support contemporary creative practice in Shetland. Shetland Film Archive has raised money to digitise this material so that it can be screened, used and enjoyed again. These films provide an opportunity to see how people have viewed and responded to Shetland over time, and will hopefully inspire the next generation of Homemade-ers to capture their ideas in moving images.
Maya Darrell Hewins is a filmmaker and researcher, who has taught animation to people of all ages for art galleries, film festivals and charities across the UK.
