WELCOME

So April is already upon us, a third of the way through the year, only 270 or so shopping days till Christmas! But lots to see, do and enjoy before then. The team have packed away Natural Selection at the Old Anderson High School which has been extremely successful with over one and a half thousand visits, including visits from schools from all across the isles to learn more about the exhibition and the natural environment of Shetland. Huge thanks to all our partners for helping to make this powerful and important exhibition happen in such a great setting.

Jumping now to the future and welcoming Folk Frenzy which is Fiddle Frenzy reborn. Under Kevin Henderson’s stewardship, the introduction of ensemble classes will enable everyone to benefit from the wonderful tutors we have lined up. We are really happy to have taken advance bookings from across the globe. If you have not already booked be aware that some classes have almost sold out. On another exciting folk note, we are really pleased to be welcoming back Shetland Folk Festival for six performances at Mareel at the beginning of May including performances from stalwarts of the scene Blazin’ Fiddles through to recently formed outfits (and a personal favourite of mine) Herkja.

Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change.

ShetlandMade is returning to Bonhoga on 30 March for what we hope will be another successful summer. The first showcase will champion the craftsmanship and innovative design of five of Shetland’s finest makers; with jewellery from Jayne Kelly and Coleen Thomson (Yala); Joan Fraser and Morwenna Garrick will be adding new products to their growing collections of contemporary textiles and ceramic artist Sharon McGeady will include sculpture alongside her popular Shetland themed ceramics. I have run out of space to tell you about the great range of films, workshops, and events that we are also hosting in April. Grab a drink in the café and give the guide a read!

Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley 

I Remember Mama

Fraser Taylor is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow. He studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017.

Islesburgh Drama Group presents, I Remember Mama.

Between 2013 and 2014 he spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light. He was also moved by John J. Graham’s 1987 novel Shadowed Valley, which tells the harrowing tale of one family in Weisdale and how they and their extended community’s lives were decimated by the evictions and land clearances of the nineteenth century. This series of suspended textile works currently on display in the Upper Cafe Bar at Mareel was created for Fraser’s exhibition Shadowed Valley, at Bonhoga Gallery in 2015 after which it was gifted to Shetland Arts.

The story recounts the everyday life and economic struggles of a Norwegian immigrant family in San Francisco in the early 20th century. Mama keeps a firm but loving hand on her household of four children and devoted husband. Through financial crises, illness and small triumphs of everyday life Mama maintains her optimism and sense of humour, traits she passes on to her aspiring-author daughter Katrin.

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for largescale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles.

Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the southfacing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.

Bonhoga promotes the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft through a programme of curated retail, exhibition and showcase opportunities, delivered from the main gallery space and supplementary retail areas. Supporting over 70 established and emerging artists, designers and makers, Bonhoga offers a unique opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of contemporary applied art, craft and print.

Shetland Folk Frenzy 

CASH – A Tribute to Johnny Cash 

Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham 

A week of workshops, concerts, sessions and masterclasses, Folk Frenzy is curated by renowned Shetland fiddler, Kevin Henderson and will run from Sunday 14 – Friday 19th July 2019.

Widely regarded as the UK’s most authentic tribute to Johnny Cash, CASH, returns to Shetland for the 5th time within the last decade having previously played to over 6000 islanders including sold out shows at the Clickimin Centre, Mareel and Party On The Pier in Yell.

Aly and Phil have become a national institution with their incomparable mastery of fiddle and accordion. Individually they pursue other ventures in performance, television, and education but it is when they tour together that they truly shine with over a quarter of a century of well-honed skills and hilarious banter delighting audiences everywhere.

After taking a break for 2018 Fiddle Frenzy has been developed into Folk Frenzy, still with a significant fiddle focus but broadening the festival out to include other aspects of folk music and explore how the Shetland Fiddle tradition fits in with the rest of the traditional music scene elsewhere in the world. Folk Frenzy 2019 sees the addition of international names to the tuition mix, and the introduction of an ‘ensemble’ class, alongside the fiddle classes to widen the festival out to other musicians and instruments who wish to know more about the Shetland Tradition.

CASH singer Ben Welburn carry’s off the role of the legendary “Man in Black” effortlessly due to having the same brooding looks as the young Johnny Cash, but also, more importantly, the same distinctive baritone vocals of the man he pays tribute to. Expect to hear all the Johnny Cash classics including Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line and Ring Of Fire amongst many others. Support for the show comes from local rockabillys, Isaac Webb Trio.

CASE STUDY

James Acaster

Screenplay Home Made 2019

Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK.

Shetland Arts is calling on local filmmakers to submit their work for this year’s Home Made, part of Screenplay Film Festival which runs from 30 August to 8 September.

Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.” Friday 27 September, 7.30pm  Mareel  £20

Screenplay has a new Director this year following the retirement of Kathy Hubbard, who had run the festival since 2009. Jenny Leask already programmes the cinemas at Mareel, and has previously worked for cinemas and film festivals in Edinburgh before moving back home to Shetland in 2016. Kathy will, however, be staying on to coordinate the Home Made event, her favourite part of the festival. Kathy says: “This is a highlight of the festival, and we always look forward to seeing what will arrive each year. Whether you want to tell a story, tell a good joke, create a short documentary or make an animated film, we’d love to hear from you!” All kinds of films are welcome, but they must be suitable for general viewing, as the Home Made event appeals to a family audience, and be under four minutes long. Film makers must be Shetlanders by birth or residency, and entries are also welcome from Shetland students living south who are engaged in higher education. Watch out, too, for forthcoming news from Shetland ForWirds, who will once more be offering prizes for the most effective use of Shetland dialect.

SCREEN H o m e m ad e CALL FOR ENTRIES! ScreenPlay is calling for entries from Shetland film makers of any age, to show at our festival between 30 August - 8 September For more info and for entry forms contact Kathy Hubbard on 07876 727 059, email kathy.hubbard@ shetlandarts.org or download the submission form from shetlandarts. org/screenplay Submission deadline: Friday 26 July, 5pm.
