Shetland summers are wonderfully variable, but at least this means we can happily sit indoors at Mareel and Bonhoga without feeling that we are missing out on the sunshine! It’s hard to write about Shetland Arts in August without mentioning Screenplay, which starts on Friday 30 August. It’s even harder to write about Screenplay when I am not

Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change.
Through our partnership with Shetland College and the University of Highlands and Islands, we are hosting the Shoormal Conference for three days from the 18th of September. This is an opportunity for us all to join in exploring, creating and debating creative practice; the environment; innovation in the creative economy; islands and creative solutions; exploring digital collaboration; heritage and culture. I know that may seem like quite a mouthful but in essence if you are involved in the creative economy you will want to be here! If there is any sunshine enjoy it, if not come and see a film or simply have a coffee and grab a snack.. Graeme

Collection & Archive: These Favourite Things To celebrate the final year of our START Schools Education Programme we present COLLECTION & ARCHIVE Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us, and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home. COLLECTION & ARCHIVE: FAVOURITE THINGS represents the treasured possessions of all the pupils we have worked with in 2019. In years to come this may tell us more than we can possibly know right now… The START Bonhoga Education Programme is supported by national organisation Children & The Arts and delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. It provides young people in five local schools with the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, focusing on our contemporary visual art programme.

Director Ron Howard pays tribute to a towering cultural figure with this affectionate and entertaining documentary. Granted unique access to the Pavarotti family archives, home videos, behind the scenes and extensive live music footage, we see Pavarotti’s personal story emerge: from his humble beginnings in northern Italy through to global superstardom. We get to know the great tenor as a husband and a father, a committed philanthropist, as well as a fragile artist who had a complex relationship with his own unique talents and unprecedented success.

The Night Before Screenplay Film Quiz This year’s Screenplay film quiz takes place on the evening before the festival films kick off, so this is your opportunity to get ‘match fit’. Hosted by Mark Kermode and Linda Ruth Williams and supported by Mareel’s regular quizmaster team, there will be more than the usual mayhem going on. Hoping to see all our regular teams and some new contenders so book early – this is always sold out. As usual, the ticket price is for the table, not the individual, and there must be no more than six to a team. So – come early, come determined, and let battle commence! Quiz takes place in the Main Auditorium via Cafe Bar entrance. Max team size: 6 people. £15 buys you a table for your team.
ScreenPlay Film Festival 2019 Shetland’s annual film festival is curated by our own Jenny Leask alongside celebrated film historian Linda Ruth Williams and film critic Mark Kermode. It features a feast of film screenings and events, plus Q&A sessions with film makers. Screenplay also has a strong local flavour, provided by the work of local film makers of all ages, and an outreach programme taking in community halls and education. If you want to see and experience as much of it as you can, then a Screencard is for you. The card gives you entry into all film screenings between those dates, subject to availability (but remember, you must pre-book to guarantee admission), plus an invitation to join our guests at the festival reception.

Front Country Front Country is an acclaimed acoustic band from California, fronted by gifted singer and songwriter Melody Walker with her huge bluesy voice. The quintet is based on bluegrass instrumentation but draws on a broad palette of country, blues, Americana and jazz influences. Front Country has become renowned as a storming live act on the US festival scene over the last few years, after winning the band competition at Colorado’s Rockygrass festival in their early days. They refer to their style as “roots-pop” which goes some way to describing their wide-ranging but majestic and accessible sound. Now based in Nashville, this entertaining five-piece is packed with instrumental and songwriting talent, including Jacob Groopman (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Darrow (double bass), Adam “Roscoe” Roszkiewicz (mandolin/ vocals) and Leif Karlstrom (fiddle). Support comes from Shetland’s own acclaimed Americana specialists Kansa, who last year released their excellent debut album The Rowan Tree. “Sharply played ensemble Americana, with a powerhouse vocalist who puts the blues in bluegrass” - Rolling Stone
Beyond Bonhoga: Roseanne Watt, Stoal As part of Beyond Bonhoga, Shetland Arts’ ongoing programme of off-site exhibitions in locations across Shetland, we present Stoal, an exhibition by Roseanne Watt at The Booth in Scalloway. In a series of short filmpoems, Roseanne Watt summons up five ‘uncan’ (strange) beings who act as guardians of Shetland’s landscape, language and memory. Made with the assistance of the Kishie Wife Collective, spirits of land, sea, fire and water come together in this exhibition to observe what has been, and what may yet happen. Roseanne Watt is a poet, filmmaker and musician from Shetland whose work is inspired by the landscape and language of her birthplace. She won the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award in 2018, the Outspoken Poetry Prize (Poetry in Film) in 2015 and was runner-up in the 2018 Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. She lives and works in Edinburgh.

James Acaster
Strip MS Again
Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK.
The MS Society Shetland presents Strip MS Again, with local bands Forgotten Sons and Sidewinder. Our amazing strippers are back to put on a show with a few good men also getting waxed for you all to see!
Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.” Friday 27 September, 7.30pm Mareel £20 SOLD OUT
There will also be a raffle on the night. WARNING: This show may contain nudity and strobe lighting. Over 18’s only: ID may be required on entry.

365 Stories and Music Wordplay 2019 is taking on a slightly different format this year, built around the concert, workshops and installation of 365: Stories and Music, a major new collection of Scottish contemporary literature and music in one interactive sound-art installation, launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival this year and touring to Mareel in November. 365: Stories and Music brings together the genius of Scottish poet and novelist James Robertson and Scottish fiddler and composer Aidan O’Rourke of Lau. James wrote a short story every day for a year, each story comprising 365 words, this was published in 2014 by Penguin as 365: Stories. Aidan then matched the challenge. He wrote a new tune every day for a year in response to James’s stories. I loved reading those stories: a daily dose of poetry and wisdom. And I loved the writing. The language is emotional, concise, apposite. Somehow the words and the pacing of the stories felt musical. I was intrigued by the discipline of setting such a quantifiable daily creative ritual. Would the same be possible in music…? (Aidan O’Rourke) Aidan’s response is sparse and emotive contemporary folk music — the fiddle is paired with bold and exploratory harmonies from ECM recording artist Kit Downes on harmonium and piano.
