Steve Birrell Photography 

Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley 

Steve Birrell is a local amateur landscape photographer, inspired by the weather, the colours and the amazing light in Shetland at all times of the year. His photography encourages him to explore Shetland, discovering beautiful places that he didn’t know existed, he writes “My favourite time of day for capturing Shetland is the golden hour, just before the sun sets; the light then can transform the landscape.”

Fraser studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017. He spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light.

A Christmas Carol (PG)

 1h57

 1h41

A devastating reconstruction of the massacre of 69 young people by Anders Behring Breivik.

Based on Charles Dickens’s own performance adaptation of his timeless Christmas tale, actor Simon Callow and director Tom Cairns have created a one-man theatrical extravaganza of festive storytelling that is both heart-warming and deeply moving.

Through meticulous interviews with survivors, director Erik Poppe created composite characters for this drama. These include 18-year-old Kaja, whom the camera ceaselessly follows as she searches for her sister while attempting to hide from Breivik. This isn’t easy viewing, but it’s a lucid, critical reminder of the tremendous cost of mass tragedy, and a powerful memorial to its young survivors.

Following critically acclaimed, soldout theatre seasons in 2011, 2012 and again in 2016, this tour de force performance has been reimagined especially for cinema. A Christmas must see!

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.

Bonhoga promotes the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft through a programme of curated retail, exhibition and showcase opportunities, delivered from the main gallery space and supplementary retail areas. The son of a lighthouse keeper and the Queen of Atlantis, Arthur has the ability to manipulate the tides, swim at super speeds, and communicate with ocean life - not to mention superhuman strength. He’s more than just a human, and has to take the responsibility that comes with it.

A peaceful pro-democracy rally in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history, when British government forces charged into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. Many protestors were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression.

Time Out London

Observing a blackbird building a nest in the garden of his parents’ house several years ago, artist Andy Holden began an extended conversation about the nest as an overlooked aspect of bird life with his father, eminent ornithologist Peter Holden. This developed into Natural Selection, a collaborative exhibition of objects, sculpture and videos, commissioned by Artangel, an organisation that produces and presents extraordinary art in unexpected places in London, across the UK and around the world. A stunning exhibition for all the family, Shetland Arts is delighted to be hosting Natural Selection at the old Anderson High School site in Lerwick.

creative LABS Creative Labs  Continental Drift: Scottish Ensemble with Keyvan Chemirani  What happens when you blend the music of the old European masters with the breathless virtuosity of contemporary Persia and the Mediterranean? Keyvan Chemirani, Bijan Chemirani and Sokratis Sinopoulos are exceptional musicians: intuitive, agile, inventive. Together they explore the connections between the music of Baroque Europe and the Eastern musical traditions of the same era; the results are astonishing, shedding new light on history, music and our perceptions of both. For Continental Drift, they’ll join Scottish Ensemble musicians for a performance bonding east and west, learning and improvisation, intuition and precision, freedom and control. Seated close to the action, this is a chance not only to experience the impressive mastery of multiple instruments at close quarters, but to enter a brand new sound world, created next to you, in real time; a world of melodic warmth, rhythmic verve, playful energy and exotic flair. this and I felt that doing this helped me as I then knew what everyone else did within their job roles, which made it easier when doing tasks for the other departments.

Lois has been with Shetland Arts for just over a year now and here is her reflection on the past year:

I have met a lot of really great people since I started working here. I feel that being in a shared office with the different departments has really given me the chance to get to know everyone that I work with. I have felt so welcomed since I started working here and I really appreciate the different opportunities that have risen to work on exciting projects.”

“During my time at Shetland Arts, I have enjoyed learning about the different Festivals that we put on such as Wordplay and Screenplay. It has been interesting to learn about what it takes to coordinate festivals and how much hard work goes into it by staff and volunteers. When I started working here, I got the opportunity to work for half a day in the other departments. I really enjoyed doing
