Winter Wellbeing Arts Sessions www.childrenandarts.org.uk
These Favourite Things Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us, and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home. COLLECTION & ARCHIVE: FAVOURITE THINGS represents the treasured possessions of all the pupils we have worked with in 2019. In years to come this may tell us more than we can possibly know right now… The START Bonhoga Education Programme is supported by national organisation Children & The Arts and delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. It provides young people in five local schools with the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, focusing on our contemporary visual art programme.
Wellbeing Arts Sessions (Drop-in) Informal Arts sessions in a low pressure environment and open to all. Sessions follow the model of one hour of arts activity followed by tea, coffee and biscuits for 30 minutes. Sessions are an opportunity to meet new people, learn something new and have fun.

Plastiglomerates
by Aimee Labourne
‘Plastiglomerate’ is a proposed new kind of ‘human-made’ rock, consisting of a mix of melted plastic debris and natural sediment. Samples have been found on shorelines across the world. They are one part of a terrifying plastic pollution problem, which extends far beyond just visible material - as plastiglomerates are churned around in the water, smaller and smaller shards break off and form a ‘smog’ of microplastic particles in the ocean. Invented at the start of the 20th century, plastic was initially seen as utopian - endlessly malleable, convenient, hygienic – and so suitable for Modernity’s new vision. Increased post-war consumerism and exploitation of nature now means however that the detritus of urban-utopia is clogging our most remote and wild-seeming coasts. Despite the vastness of the ocean, its watery depths cannot absorb this dystopian material. Through drawing, I wish to isolate these uncannily organic samples from their usual shoreline context where they blend in all too easily. Studying these plastic forms almost as though they are geological specimens allows me to trace their strange lines and shapes in detail, lines which reveal how natural processes now confusingly mix with human actions in a world which is becoming more and more materially chaotic.
Admission is free, there’s ample space for buggy parking and we have tea, coffee and cakes in the Café downstairs! These sessions have been popular - please come early to get a good spot! Special Storytime: Draganory Saturday 14 December 11:30am See Page 17 for more details.

This Winter Port & Lemon Running concurrently in the Lower Gallery is an exhibition of prints by British design brand Port and Lemon. The brand was started in 2012 by Tracy Evans and Kate Cooke who both started their creative careers in textile design, Kate as a print designer and Tracy as a woven textiles designer. They have many years’ experience between them in the design industry. They met at an art show and discovered their mutual appreciation for each other’s work. The first designs they produced ‘Hello Sailor’ and ‘Salty Sea Dog’ quickly became best sellers, and they have since gone on to design another 15 prints and have developed a range of contemporary homewares and gifts using their designs. The strong blue and white imagery has become popular around the UK shores as well as making it inland and overseas. The brand appeals to sailors, seaside lovers and those who aspire to coastal living. Complementing the print range is a small collection of their homewares and gifts.

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for largescale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles.
Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the southfacing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.
Bonhoga promotes the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft through a programme of curated retail, exhibition and showcase opportunities, delivered from the main gallery space and supplementary retail areas. Supporting over 70 established and emerging artists, designers and makers, Bonhoga offers a unique opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of contemporary applied art, craft and print.

This wonderfully atmospheric concert film is a companion piece to Bruce Springsteen’s latest album.
It’s Christmas Eve, 1946, and George Bailey (James Stewart), who has long considered himself a failure, faces financial ruin and arrest. High above him, two celestial voices discuss George’s dilemma and decide to send down eternally bumbling angel Clarence Oddbody to help him out. But first, Clarence is given a crash course on George’s life, and the multitude of selfless acts he has performed.
Springsteen’s first studio album in five years, Western Stars marks a departure for the legendary singer/ songwriter while still drawing on his roots. Touching on themes of love and loss, loneliness and family and the inexorable passage of time, this cinematic event evokes the American West, both the mythic and the hardscrabble, weaving archival footage and Springsteen’s personal narration with song.

Norman Willmore Quartet The Norman Willmore Quartet blends Scandinavian and Appalachian folk music with elements of free jazz as well as arrangements of old wartime songs and hymns always played with a sense of humour, and with respect to the tradition. The quartet are recording an album at the start of the new year so will be playing in lots of new material at this gig. ‘The monumental cliffs, swelling ebb and rural village politics of the Shetland Islands are the inspiration behind the music of the Norman Willmore Quintet. All the musicians in the band are working towards a common goal with no ego present, and not one person ever standing out. Playing together for 3 years in the same line-up has given the band a distinctive sound that is soft and inviting but always with the feeling of momentum and power behind it. They are often all improvising together in a tasteful dialogue, taking the audience on a journey to the last house at the end of the last road.’
RANT RANT is the meeting of 4 of Scotland’ s finest fiddle players, two from the Shetland Islands and two from the Highlands. Bethany Reid, Jenna Reid, Lauren MacColl and Anna Massie join forces to create a sound which is both rich and lush, yet retaining all the bite and spark synonymous with a Scottish fiddle player. Using just their fiddles, they weave a tapestry of melodies, textures, layers and sounds. Known for their work as soloists and with various bands, this is a celebration of the instrument they all have a passion for.
Antigone, Interrupted What do you do when the state becomes the oppressor? Would you put your body on the line? What’s the value of dissent in our democracies? Using their distinctive mixture of dance, theatre and storytelling, choreographer Joan Clevillé and acclaimed performer Solène Weinachter present Antigone, Interrupted, an intimate solo work, performed in the round, re-imagining the Greek tragedy of Antigone for contemporary audiences. Exploring the strength and vulnerability of the body as a tool for resistance and civil disobedience, the piece follows the story of a young woman who disobeys the law and puts her body on the line to defend what she thinks is right. The work examines the value of dissent in contemporary democracy and how the body (and in particular the female body) can be the target of oppression but also a powerful tool for challenging social injustice.

CASE STUDY
The garden was overgrown. It didn’t look as if anybody lived there at all. When they knocked at the door it swung open. “Let’s go in,” Miley said, “so we can get out of the rain.” They found themselves in a big room with chairs and sofas all covered over with dust-sheets. “Let’s get out of here,” said Kelsey, who didn’t really feel like being a platypus any more.
Uncle David’s House Of Horrors By Whiteness Primary School P6&7. Written during a 365: Stories & Music workshop with James Robertson. It was Halloween. Miley and Kelsey had decided to go guising. Miley dressed up as Donald Duck. Kelsey was a duck-billed platypus. But where were they going to go? “Let’s go to that old house at the Cliffs of Eshaness,” Miley said. “You must be joking!” Kelsey said. “That’s where Uncle David lives.” Everybody was frightened of Uncle David. They told lots of stories about him, and most of them were bad stories. He lived all alone, ever since his wife had died. But some people said she hadn’t died of natural causes. They said Uncle David had murdered her. They also said that he kept a hyena to scare people away from his house. They said he used to work in Area 51 in
the American desert, which was full of aliens. They said there was a tunnel under his house that went all the way to an evil underground layer in the middle of London – right underneath 10 Downing Street, in fact. There were even stories about him kidnaping children and eating them. “I’m not going anywhere near there,” Kelsey said. “Oh, those are just stories,” Miley said. “You always hear scary stories at Halloween.” Eventually, Miley persuaded her friend to go with her. It was a long walk to the Cliffs at Eshaness, and they were tired by the time they got there. It was also cold, and the wind was rising, and it was beginning to rain. The house looked all crooked, and many of its windows were boarded up.
Just then they heard somebody crying. It sounded like an old man. They opened another door and there was Uncle David sitting by the fireside. He was blowing his nose and wiping his eyes with his hanky, and talking to himself. “Oh, darling, I still miss you,” he said. He was talking to his wife, who had been dead all those years! Suddenly he turned round and saw the two lassies. But instead of trying to eat them, his face lit up with delight. “Is it Halloween?” he cried. “It’s so long since anyone came guising here. Please come in and warm yourselves by the fire. Here, have a piece of chocolate cake. My wife hated Halloween, and made up all these stories about the house to keep people away. But now you have come! You are very welcome.” He had an old record-player, and played them some Beatles records. “These always help to calm me down when I’m feeling upset,” he said. “George Harrison is my favourite songwriter.” “Which is your favourite Beatles song?” Miley asked as she reached for a second slice of cake. “Here Comes the Sun,” said Uncle David. “Although I also like ‘In My Life’. Do you have a favourite?” “I do,” Kelsey said. “It’s ‘Blackbird’.” But they didn’t have to play it, because outside in the overgrown garden they could hear a blackbird singing.
