Plastiglomerates These Favourite Lucy Woodley, by Aimee Labourne
‘Plastiglomerate’ is a proposed new kind of ‘human-made’ rock, consisting of a mix of melted plastic debris and natural sediment. Samples have been found on shorelines across the world. They are one part of a terrifying plastic pollution problem, which extends far beyond just visible material - as plastiglomerates are churned around in the water, smaller and smaller shards break off and form a ‘smog’ of microplastic particles in the ocean. Invented at the start of the 20th century, plastic was initially seen as utopian - endlessly malleable, convenient, hygienic – and so suitable for Modernity’s new vision. Increased post-war consumerism and exploitation of nature now means however that the detritus of urban-utopia is clogging our most remote and wild-seeming coasts. Despite the vastness of the ocean, its watery depths cannot absorb this dystopian material. Ending on Friday 31 January Mareel Feature Space Free

Ultima Thule
Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us, and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home.
...War, violence and persecution leaves at least one in every 122 humans on the planet a refugee, internally displaced or seeking asylum. There are borders, some friendly, some not and the journey can be a hopeful adventure towards new shores and a better future or a desperate passage undertaken to anywhere to escape the place of departure, left with regret, often driven by fear…
The START Bonhoga Education Programme is supported by national organisation Children & The Arts and delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. It provides young people in five local schools with the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, focusing on our contemporary visual art programme.

A blend of Scandinavian and Appalachian folk music with elements of free jazz as well as arrangements of old wartime songs and hymns always played with a sense of humour, and with respect to the tradition. The quartet are recording an album at the start of the new year so will be playing in lots of new material at this gig. ‘The monumental cliffs, swelling ebb and rural village politics of the Shetland Islands are the inspiration behind the music of the Norman Willmore Quintet. Playing together for 3 years has given the band a distinctive sound that is soft and inviting but always with the feeling of momentum and power behind it. They are often all improvising together in a tasteful dialogue, taking the audience on a journey to the last house at the end of the last road.’

ANTIGONE, INTERRUPTED What do you do when the state becomes the oppressor? Would you put your body on the line? What’s the value of dissent in our democracies? Scotland’s national contemporary dance company use their distinctive mixture of dance, theatre and storytelling to present Antigone, Interrupted - an intimate solo work, performed in the round, reimagining the Greek tragedy of Antigone for contemporary audiences. Exploring the strength and vulnerability of the body as a tool for resistance and civil disobedience, the piece follows the story of a young woman who disobeys the law and puts her body on the line to defend what she thinks is right. Created by choreographer Joan Clevillé and acclaimed performer Solène Weinachter, the work examines the value of dissent in contemporary democracy and how the body (and in particular the female body) can be the target of oppression but also a powerful tool for challenging social injustice. The work will reinterpret the ‘multi-disciplinary’ character of ancient Greek theatre, which combined song, dance, ritual and performance, and interweave Sophocles’ original tragedy with newly written text and dance. By placing the audience around the dancer, Clevillé emphasises the body’s vulnerability and interdependence with others, as well as exploring alternative ways to engage with and watch dance.

A Hidden Life
Honey Boy
Director Terrence Malick (Badlands, The Thin Red Line) is back on top form with this rapturous and devastating drama, based on a true story.
From a screenplay by Shia LaBeouf, based on his own experiences, this extraordinary film brings to life a young actor’s stormy childhood and early adult years as he struggles to reconcile with his father.
A Hidden Life is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fanni and children that keeps his spirit alive.
Fictionalising his childhood ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, LaBeouf takes on the daring and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Director Alma Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a oneof-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as therapy and imagination as hope. the Tour de France 2000 on Mont Ventoux. Once regarded as the greatest race in the history of cycling, we now know that both Armstrong and Pantani doped during their careers. At the time both were champions in their own right - Pantani winning the Tour de France in 1998, and Armstrong winning in 1999. In 2000 they went head to head on Mont Ventoux. They crossed the line together but their careers spiralled in wildly opposite directions. Armstrong won seven consecutive Tour de France titles; Pantani died of a cocaine overdose alone in a hotel room. Armstrong denied, lied and cheated where Pantani was caught.
