WELCOME romantic, gloriously Technicolor WWII fantasy A Matter of Life and Death.

Welcome to February! But before we get started with this months range of opportunities and entertainment I want to take a moment to encourage you to view the highlights videos from our Hogmanay celebrations. From Herkja to Arthur Nicholson and Kris Drever and from Girsie & The Loose Ends too the Peatbog Faeries we had a wonderful night and short highlights clips have been released through the Mareel facebook page. February is also a great opportunity to make your way to the old Anderson High School site to view our latest Beyond Bonhoga exhibition, Natural Selection. Having already shown in London and Scotland this collaboration between Peter Holden, the former

“bird man” on Blue Peter, and his artist, animator and musician son Andy. The Guardian gave the show 5 stars “For the father, this is a triumph of natural selection; for the son, it’s the essence of creativity. The bird has a concept of beauty that precedes and governs his creation.” We’re into movie awards season and screening The Favourite, Vice, Can You Ever Forgive Me and the charming Green Book, all sure to be up for Oscars. Two hugelysuccessful franchises continue with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. Our Valentine’s Day pick this year takes us back to the 1940s with Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s swooningly

Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change.

creative LABS Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley 

Creative Labs: Life Drawing 

Fraser Taylor is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow. He studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017.

Practice your life drawing skills and techniques with access to a real life nude model.

Between 2013 and 2014 he spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light. He was also moved by John J. Graham’s 1987 novel Shadowed Valley, which tells the harrowing tale of one family in Weisdale and how they and their extended community’s lives were decimated by the evictions and land clearances of the nineteenth century. This series of suspended textile works currently on display in the Upper Cafe Bar at Mareel was created for Fraser’s exhibition Shadowed Valley, at Bonhoga Gallery in 2015 after which it was gifted to Shetland Arts.  Mareel Café Bar

Participants will have access to a nude model in a comfortable, well lit workspace and time to focus on developing your life drawing skills and techniques. These informal life drawing sessions give artists of all abilities the opportunity to practise using a nude model. The model will work through a series of dynamic poses, then some longer poses to allow participants to produce more detailed work. Suitable for artists used to selfdirected work - these are not tutored sessions. Participants will bring their own materials, and easels are not provided. English language version.

 1h57

A spectacular post-apocalyptic adventure, adapted from the novel by Philip Reeve.

An enchanting animated fairytale about the ties that bring families together and make us who we are.

Steve Coogan and John C Reilly star as the iconic duo in this poignant comedy drama.

Hundreds of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, a mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw, emerges as the only one who can stop London – now a giant, predator city on wheels – from devouring everything in its path. Hester joins forces with Tom Natsworthy, an outcast from London, and Anna Fang, a dangerous outlaw with a bounty on her head.

When four-year-old Kun meets his new baby sister, his world is turned upside down. Named Mirai (meaning ‘future’), the baby quickly wins the hearts of Kun’s entire family. Kun becomes increasingly jealous of baby Mirai, until one day he storms off into the garden, where he encounters strange guests from the past and future...

Laurel and Hardy, one of the world’s great comedy teams, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future, but as the charm and beauty of their performances shines through, they reconnect with their adoring fans.

Rose Room

 Support from Bryan Gear and Violet Tulloch. Scottish Jazz Award-winners Rose Room have become one of Scotland’s leading ensembles influenced by the Gypsy Jazz genre. Sharing a love of Swing music and the style of the great Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, their “vigorous and vivacious” performances go “down a storm” with any audience as they serve up their 1930s ‘Hot Club’ standards, Gypsy Jazz favourites and self-penned originals with virtuosity, verve and panache recreating the excitement of Rive Gauche Paris. Based in Glasgow, the quartet is fronted by award-winning violinist and “sophisticated songstress” Seonaid Aitken who was voted Scottish Jazz Awards ‘Best Vocalist’ in 2017 & 2018 and also plays with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, the Tim Kliphuis Sextet and is presenter of BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Jazz Nights’. Scotland’s No.1 guitar maker, Jimmy Moon of ‘Moon Guitars’, features on double bass with Celtic Connections’ Danny Kyle Award-winners ‘Swing Guitars’ Tam Gallagher and Tom Watson on rhythm and solo guitars respectively. With three albums recorded to date – ‘The High Life’ (2015), ‘Am I Blue’ (2013) and ‘Somewhere In Roseland’ (2011) – Rose Room have headlined at all of the major Scottish jazz festivals, appeared at the celebrated Shetland Folk Festival, and toured Ireland performing at the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival. Their collaboration with top Scottish saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski and ‘string quartet to the stars’, the Capella String Quartet, led to the formation of ‘Rose Room Orchestra Fantastique’ – a 9-piece ensemble which celebrates the vintage sound of the 1930s. Rose Room were delighted to have been voted ‘Best Band’ in the Scottish Jazz Awards 2018, having been finalists in the previous two Scottish Jazz Awards, and are frequently played on BBC Radio Ulster, BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘The Jazz House’ and Jazz FM. They have performed with world-famous virtuoso jazz guitarist Martin Taylor, German Gypsy Jazz star Joscho Stephan and they are involved in teaching and fundraising for The Clutha Trust charity. Two of Rose Room’s tracks are also featured on The Clutha Sessions charity CD.

James Acaster Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK. Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.” Friday 27 September, 7.30pm  Mareel  £20
