NATURAL SELECTION Andy Holden / Peter Holden
WELCOME What will the new year bring? What resolutions have you made? I am always resolving to try and be better, more focussed, more creative, though not things you can ever tick off as having achieved.
Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change. Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga, The Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events. Our vision is for a creative, connected Shetland that values art and culture and the transformative impact it can have on everyone’s life; a Shetland that nurtures and celebrates its own creative talents and is open to all cultures and lifestyles; a Shetland where no one feels isolated and where culture is core to ensuring the economic and social wellbeing of all its residents. Supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082). Registered office: Mareel, Lerwick, ZE1 0WQ
If your new year’s resolution is to take a little bit more time for yourself, a little bit of self care and look to your wellbeing I am excited to announce that our Wellbeing provision is expanding. Building on the success of the Wellbeing Choir we are introducing Wellbeing Writing and Wellbeing Craft. Join us for cosy creative evenings during the cold winter months to contribute towards your good mental health. If you are considering starting a new hobby then Natural Selection at the old Anderson High School site in Lerwick could provide a great source of inspiration. Opening at the end of the month and preceded by a joint talk between artist Andy Holden and his well-known ornithologist father Peter Holden, the exhibition has been receiving rave reviews around the country. At Bonhoga we are beginning the year with an exhibition of photography from current members of long standing local amateur photography group Islesburgh Photographic Club.
If learning more about other people stories or lives is your plan for 2019 then we have a plethora of films based on real events this month. The Old Man & the Gun (featuring a wonderful, reportedly final, performance from Robert Redford), Welcome to Marwen, White Boy Rick, Lizzie, Stan & Ollie and The 12th Man, as well as the return of the hugely popular Bohemian Rhapsody. Definitely not based on real events, dazzling animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits our screens from 4 January, closely followed by Transformers spin-off Bumblebee, and the stars of Step Brothers reunite for hilarious comedy Holmes & Watson. We’re celebrating the brilliant career of Steven Spielberg with four of his greatest blockbusters – Jaws, E.T. The ExtraTerrestrial, Jurassic Park and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Even if you’ve seen them before, it’s still an absolute joy to watch them on the big screen. Whatever your plans for 2019 I hope you will find some time to spend with us.

Natural Selection is the beautiful and thought-provoking result of a five-year collaboration between artist Andy Holden and his father, the well-known ornithologist Peter Holden best known as “the bird man” on BBC’s Blue Peter. Birds – and the human fascination with their habits and habitats – are at the heart of the exhibition which includes film, sculpture, photographs and animation. The origin of this commission lies in his Peter Holden’s authority in the fields of natural history and ornithology. Peter Holden worked for the RSPB for 45 years, building the Young Ornithologist Club, which Andy Holden joined as a boy, into the largest wildlife club in the world.

“It’s so fantastic to be able to bring work of this caliber to Shetland, and to bring the old school back to life for the duration of the show. The setting is perfect for this beautiful and beguiling exhibition that explores characteristics in birdlife that are innate or inherited, from nest building to egg laying, in an exquisite way that both delights and educates in spades. It’s a show for young and old alike and we are so grateful for all the support that has enabled us to host it” (Jane Matthews, Shetland Arts Exhibition Manager). Shetland Arts is delighted to be hosting Natural Selection with generous support from The Sullom Voe Association Ltd, Lerwick Community Council, SIC, Artangel and Creative Scotland.
