July is always a great time of year in Shetland Arts. The college students studying music and film have finished their courses and can relax, and our best wishes are with them for whatever they are planning next. Staff are taking holidays and refreshing themselves for the next push as well as bringing inspiration back with them from their travels. Organisationally, we are beginning to gear up for our festival season which this year begins with the Folk Weekender. From the 5th July to the 8th July, The Folk Weekender will be a feast of workshops and opportunities for all musicians interested in expanding their repertoire. As an alternative to Fiddle Frenzy, this weekend will focus on collaboration and the breadth of instruments that make up the folk tradition (more on page 8 & 10). Screenplay will run from Friday 24 August for ten days and along with usual excellent range of education activity and screenings of films from all over the world we have some very special guests that we will be announcing. The team are also working hard on putting together Wordplay which this year will be from the 8 - 11 November. We are also heavily involved in the Big Takeover with colleagues from across the council, Amenity Trust and Recreational Trust. Supported by Event Scotland as one of their beacon events during the Year of Young People
our venues are being taken over and programmed by teams of enthusiastic YPs. Look out for something completely different from the 14th - 16th of September. Our summer program of workshops and opportunities for young people will also be returning. For animation fans and the young at heart Incredibles 2 will open on Friday 13th and is already garnering great reviews and the follow up to the hugely successful Mamma Mia will be out at the end of the month. For horror fans Hereditary will open on the 6th. Enjoy the sun and the beautiful long days.

Avril Thomson Smith A self taught local artist, Avril’s work demonstrates her natural talent and eye for detail. Her latest collection is a series of pencil drawings of a well-known area of Lerwick, ‘Da Lodberries’. Avril writes ‘my childhood playgrounds are a constant source of inspiration for me. Growing up in Lerwick, I loved playing in the lanes and exploring at the South End; now I love drawing these places. I am fascinated by the different textures and shades, especially of the cobbles, the unusual doorways and the old stone buildings, as well the ebb and flow of the tide there. The way the light can change the atmosphere of these places is also inspiring. I am intrigued by the history of ‘Da Lodberries’. It looks like nothing much has changed over the years; there is a stillness, and sense of timelessness here. I enjoy walking and beachcombing with my daughter in this special place. ‘Bain’s Beach’ is a treasure trove of washed up trinkets; we wonder to whom they all belonged’. Avril’s drawings of this much loved part of Lerwick evoke a sense of tranquillity and calm, and are executed with close attention to detail. Monday 21 May - Sunday 15 July Bonhoga, Lower Gallery Free

a showcase of contemporary applied art & craft from Shetland ShetlandMade celebrates craft and its role in Shetland’s culture and economy. Over the summer period the main gallery will host the work of some of Shetland’s most popular and talented practitioners. This programme is part of a new initiative to re-focus the space at Bonhoga towards Applied Art and Craft, while taking the established Visual Art programme out to new and exciting locations throughout Shetland. ShetlandMade 2 includes the launch of new contemporary textile collections from Nielanell, RoLo and Shetland Tekstiler; a new range of illustrative designs from Drawn by Monica and crofting inspired pottery from Sharon McGready. ShetlandMade 3 features Bill Brown, Helen Robertson, Julie Williamson, Margaret Hamilton & Morwenna Garrick.

In the twilight of the 17th century, magistrate Don Diego de Zama is stuck in a crumbling Spanish colony in South America, waiting for a transfer order that never arrives and gradually succumbing to lust and paranoia. Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley Fraser Taylor is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow. He studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017.

Between 2013 and 2014 he spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light. He was also moved by John J. Graham’s 1987 novel Shadowed Valley, which tells the harrowing tale of one family in Weisdale and how they and their extended community’s lives were decimated by the evictions and land clearances of the nineteenth century. This series of suspended textile works was created for Fraser’s exhibition Shadowed Valley, at Bonhoga Gallery in 2015 after which it was gifted to Shetland Arts.

Marjolein Robertson: Stories & Stand-Up
Join filmmaker Liz Musser for a week of horror film production! For the week starting Monday 16th July, you will learn how to create a story, use equipment, lots of filming techniques, and then you will shoot and edit a film that will be screened for friends and family on Friday 20th July.
In the run up to Marjolein Robertson’s third stand up show in the Edinburgh Fringe, the Shetland born comedian will be performing her new material to her home crowd. Marjolein weaves through time with jokes, anecdotes and storytelling. Intertwining her own life with a traditional trowie folktale in an evening of two parts. The first half of the evening will be the traditional Shetland trowie story the Hillsook Wedeen (Hillswick Wedding). Told from the point of view of the protagonist’s sister, the Hillswick Wedding explores day to day life in Shetland in the 1850s as well as the magical and otherworldly home of the trows. This evening will be the premiere of this story by Marjolein.
A continuation of our Youth Arts Intensive programme, the sessions will run Monday 16th July - Friday 20th July, from 10am - 4pm in Mareel’s Media Lab. Sessions may involve filming outside, so participants should wear clothes that are appropriate for the weather. Lunch will not be provided. Booking available through Shetland Box Office. Advance booking recommended – limited places available! Participants can join provided that they are going into S1 after the summer, all the way up to age 18.
In the second half of the evening Marjolein will perform her newest stand up comedy show ‘Marjolein Robertson: It’s Time’. This then takes a twist on the traditional story from the first half as Marjolein intertwines true anecdotes that led her into the world of comedy with the classic Shetland trowie tale. Fresh from the Glasgow Comedy Festival this Spring, Marjolein performed her show It’s Time to a great reception “Marjolein Robertson is a highly promising and delightfully original act.” (the Scotsman)

Creativity Camp 2018 Shetland Arts’ Creativity Camp will allow children from P5-P7 a chance to explore a range of skills in film, drama, dance, music, literature, visual art and crafts, while developing confidence, encouraging creativity and having lots of fun! Sessions run from 10am – 3.30pm starting Monday 23rd July and the block will culminate in a brand new performance for friends and family on Friday 27th July. Mareel Film Quiz Mareel’s Monthly Film Quiz is for both film buffs and novices alike! Movie themed prizes are awarded to the teams with the highest and lowest scores, but really it’s all about the glory. Max team size: 6 people.

Summer Dance Intensive Shetland Arts’ week-long Summer Dance Intensive will give young people the opportunity to explore a range of dance skills with Shetland-born dancer and choreographer Kathryn Spence. Participants will learn contemporary dance technique and use this to devise, create and edit a short dance film and choreograph a piece for the Dance Showcase on Friday 3rd August. Kathryn will work collaboratively with participants to ensure all have ownership of the pieces created, using a combination of her choreography experience and ideas from participants. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the creative process and to have your ideas heard and put into dance. Shetland Accordion & Fiddle Variety Concert
Drever McCusker Woomble are a folk supergroup who are reuniting in 2018 to mark the tenth anniversary of their album Before the Ruin. For what is one of their only non-festival shows of the year, the band – featuring Kris Drever, singer and guitarist with LAU, Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble and one of Scotland’s foremost fiddlers, John McCusker – will be joined on percussion by Admiral Fallow frontman Louis Abbott as they play the 2008 LP in full, as well as delving into each other’s back catalogues.
Shetland Accordion & Fiddle Club is holding a fundraising Variety Concert featuring all local acts.
They are teaming up with one of Shetland’s Americana favourites, Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards, for a double bill. Laura and her band previously wooed audiences at Shetland Folk Festival and then at Mareel last summer, and are back in support of their brilliant new album California Calling hot on the heels of some acclaimed shows at this year’s Celtic Connections.
The concert will feature among others the fantastic North Ness Boys, the hilarious Whalsa Weemen, top Shetland Fiddler Kirsten Hendry, the ever popular Gussie & Co with the pipes and Shetland Dance Band Da Fustra. John Cumming: Flow seas, tidelines and shores
Over the last decade Shetland sculptor John Cumming has taken part in several sea voyages and island residencies. I’m With Her
The Lone Bellow
An impromptu show in 2014 at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO, sparked the formation of I’m With Her and sent the trio touring the world together the next year. Along the way, I’m With Her formed a special, family-like chemistry, garnering acclaim for their unique blend of instrumental interplay combined with their indelible harmonies, as the New York Times describes, “... that could be sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.” Their debut album, See You Around, was recorded in Box, England, with Ethan Johns at Real World Studios.
Returning to Shetland after an acclaimed sold-out show at Mareel in January 2016, The Lone Bellow burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 2013. The Brooklynbased band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base. It’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award.

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.

Blooming Youth The Big Takeover
The BIG Takeover is a “Signature” event in Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018 calendar and is supported by EventScotland, as part of their national programme of #YOYP2018 events. The three day programme of over 80 events and activities, will offer something for all the family, and will showcase musical and drama performances, sports events, films, arts, writing, crafts and include a programme of street dance and circus workshops, foam parties, inflatable obstacle courses, laser tag, swimming at Clickimin, land zorbing, riding a Segway and many more activities, all developed by the talented young people of Shetland.
Blooming Youth is a contemporary youth-art take-over of Lerwick’s Jubilee Flower Park and Tennis Court. Working with Shetland Arts’ Exhibition team, a Lead Artist will transform the sites into a giant outdoor gallery for a one-off installation. Additional work will appear online and in Islesburgh Community Centre.
The events and activities will take place right across Lerwick – at Mareel, the Garrison Theatre, Islesburgh Community Centre, Shetland Library, Shetland Museum and Archives, Clickimin Leisure Complex, Gilbertson Park and the Jubilee Flower Park.
In a change from Shetland Arts’ normal model of a bi-annual Open exhibition for anyone over the age of 18 to submit work, this year we are focusing all our attention on our young people, from 8-26 years. They will make work that appears in new and unusual locations, in new and unusual ways.

BambinO is a first operatic adventure for six to 18-month-olds. A bird, called Uccellina, discovers an egg. The egg grows to a magical size. It hatches, revealing a baby bird, called Pulcino, who takes Uccellina for his mother. He explores the world. Uccellina tells Pulcino of the sky and its wonders, and that it is his destiny to fly the nest. Although saddened at the thought of being separated, they are soon caught up in the excitement of his imminent flight. Ready to take to the skies, the birds sing a final duet of farewell. Pulcino takes flight and soars among the clouds, and Uccellina ponders his journey.
Callum Beattie has been hard at music for almost half his life, making his own chances, taking chances and, for sure, being a chancer. The Edinburghborn musician has progressed from “mangled” versions of Wonderwall and bad gigs in pubs straight out of Trainspotting, via stage invasions in front of 80,000 REM fans and backstage blags with Kaiser Chiefs, to where he is now: a singer-songwriter with a punchy, rousing, emotive and gloriously catchy debut album that lit up 2017. And lit it up in stereo.

In 1918, the Representation of the People Act gave the first British women the right to vote and stand for public office. One hundred years on, women and girls across the UK were invited to come and mark this historic moment as part of a living portrait of women in the 21st century. On Sunday 10th of June, women and girls in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London walked together as part of this celebratory mass participation artwork. Wearing green, white and violet, the colours of the suffrage movement, PROCESSIONS appeared as a flowing river of colour through the city streets.
One hundred women artists were commissioned to work with organisations and communities across the UK to create one hundred centenary banners for PROCESSIONS as part of an extensive public programme of creative workshops. The Shetland banner was created by 26 women and girls in a series of public workshops with local artist Christina Inkster. The banner represented their thoughts and feelings about women gaining the vote and being female today. Five of them travelled down to Edinburgh to carry it in the procession, representing the 21st century women of Shetland.

Award-winning American singer songwriter Courtney Marie Andrews will round off a UK solo tour including a show at London’s Union Chapel with a gig at Mareel at the end of 2018. The 27 year old singer has released acclaimed albums including “Honest Life” (2016) and this year’s “May Your Kindness Remain”, and promises to play “lots of new songs, old songs, and in-between songs”. In January she won international artist of the year at the UK Americana Awards, while this September she is up for emerging artist of the year at Nashville’s prestigious Americana Music Honours and Awards.
