WELCOME voice on the poetry scene when she won the Edwin Morgan Poetry Prize and as I am lucky enough to have a copy of her book, I can guarantee it’s not a night to miss.

July is upon us and the long days and light nights are most welcome, although the light evenings are one of the things about living in Shetland that I am still getting used to, I often wonder how the sheep cope. But here at Shetland Arts we intend to make as much use of these wonderful long days as we can. ShetlandMade at Sumburgh Airport has opened its doors. Building

upon the success of ShetlandMade at Bonhoga this space celebrates a wide range of Shetland makers as well as stocking books from The Shetland Times Bookshop and a range of Shetland Soap company products. Take advantage of two hours of free parking making it the ideal place for all your gift needs, as well as a good option for buying tickets and having a coffee in Caffe Volare. If that’s not enough craft for you, the second ShetlandMade showcase at Bonhoga is well underway featuring work from Helen Robertson, Margaret Hamilton, Gilly B, RoLo, Just Shetland and Bill Brown. July 4th will be a great day to be at Mareel for the Shetland launch of Roseanne Watt’s poetry collection Moder Dy. Roseanne is probably well known to most of you for her films and readings. She was recognised last year as a great new

Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change.

Shetland Arts will also be welcoming visitors from across the globe to Folk Frenzy, hosted and curated by Kevin Henderson. Building upon the success of Fiddle Frenzy, Folk Frenzy incorporates a broader range of instrumentation and includes ensemble instruction. With Catriona Macdonald, Ross Couper teaching fiddle and Antti Järvela from Finland leading ensemble tuition, it promises to be a great experience. With Scottish Ballet, Space Ape, Cash and FELT by Elizabeth Schilling also happening in July, we are going to need those long days to fit everything in! Graeme

Booksmart (15)  2h02

Fast-paced, funny, and fresh, Booksmart adds a smart new spin to the coming-of-age comedy. Amy and Molly are two academic superstars and best friends who, on the eve of their high school graduation, suddenly realise they should have worked less and played more. The girls set out on a mission to cram four years worth of fun into one night.

SIXTEEN  What is it like to be sixteen years old now? Photographer Craig Easton conceived this ambitious project following his engagement with sixteen-year olds at the time of the Scottish Referendum. It was the first, and as yet, only time that these young people were given the vote in the UK. Building on the success of that work he invited 16 of the UK’s foremost documentary portrait photographers to collaborate with young people across the country to make a visual vox pop on what it means to be sixteen now. The show includes portraits from Shetland alongside those from across the UK. The exhibition forms part of the Beyond Bonhoga off-site exhibition programme and is being shown outside, on the hoarding surrounding the new Hjaltland Housing development on King Harald St. in Lerwick with an accompanying feature in Mareel. sixteentouring.co.uk Ending on Sunday 30 June  Hjaltland Hoarding, King Harald St & Mareel foyer  Free

Collection & Archive: These Favourite Things  To celebrate the final year of our START Schools Education Programme we present COLLECTION & ARCHIVE Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home. COLLECTION & ARCHIVE: FAVOURITE THINGS represents the treasured possessions of all the pupils we have worked with in 2019. In years to come this may tell us more than we can possibly know right now…

Apollo 11 (U)  1h53

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landings, this aweinspiring new documentary is a must-see on the big screen!

Scottish Ballet: Wee Hansel & Gretel A wee version of a big ballet....

Director Todd Douglas Miller delivers a very real sense of how truly momentous the Apollo 11 mission was. It’s all here – from the colossal rocket rolling to the launch pad at Florida’s Cape Canaveral, to Armstrong’s immortal words, to the tense return to land. Miller, in partnership with NASA and America’s National Archives, sifted through 11,000 hours of uncatalogued materials, and makes brilliant use of long-forgotten, often large format, footage, and commentary from the era.

Join Hansel & Gretel as they go on an adventure deep into the woods… Along the way you’ll meet a rather beguiling Witch and her mysterious raven, before arriving in an enchanted gingerbread house filled with dancing sweet treats and toys that come to life. This specially adapted show is the perfect way for young children and their families to discover the magic of ballet.

Balloon (12A)  2h25

A gripping thriller, based on an incredible true story.

The Northern Ballet: Victoria (U)  2h36

1979, East Germany at the height of the Cold War. Günter, a bricklayer, and his friend Peter, an electrician, can no longer bear the oppressive regime. The two men and their wives resolve to undertake a mission to secretly build a hot air balloon that will carry them and their families over the border fence to freedom. A nerve-racking battle against the clock begins… In German and English with English subtitles.

In celebration of her bicentenary year, Northern Ballet’s major new production brings the sensational story of Queen Victoria to life in dance. Queen Victoria’s irrepressible love for Albert sparked a royal dynasty, but his untimely death brought the world’s most powerful woman to her knees with grief. Choreographed by Cathy Marston, creator of Northern Ballet’s acclaimed Jane Eyre, with an original score by Philip Feeney, this major new production reveals the often-conflicting faces of one of Britain’s most iconic monarchs, told through the eyes of her youngest child and lifelong companion Beatrice.

SHETLAND’S ANNUAL FILM F E S T I VA L ScreenPlay 2019 

Front Country 

Shetland’s annual film festival is curated by celebrated film historian Linda Ruth Williams and film critic Mark Kermode, alongside our own Jenny Leask. It features a feast of film screenings, lectures and panel discussions involving national and international film industry professionals and film academics. Screenplay also has a strong local flavour, provided by the work of local film makers of all ages, and an outreach programme taking in community halls and education.

Front Country is an acclaimed acoustic band from California, fronted by gifted singer and songwriter Melody Walker with her huge bluesy voice. The quintet is based on bluegrass instrumentation but draws on a broad palette of country, blues, Americana and jazz influences. Front Country has become renowned as a storming live act on the US festival scene over the last few years, after winning the band competition at Colorado’s Rockygrass festival in their early days. They refer to their style as “roots-pop” which goes some way to describing their wide-ranging but majestic and accessible sound. Now based in Nashville, this entertaining five-piece is packed with instrumental and songwriting talent, including Jacob Groopman (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Darrow (double bass), Adam “Roscoe” Roszkiewicz (mandolin/ vocals) and Leif Karlstrom (fiddle).

We are now open for submissions of Homemade short films for this year’s festival! All kinds of films are welcome, but they must be suitable for general viewing, as the Home Made event appeals to a family audience, and be under four minutes long. Film makers must be Shetlanders by birth or residency, and entries are also welcome from Shetland students living south who are engaged in higher education. The deadline is Friday 26 July and submission forms can be obtained from Shetland Arts (email Kathy at kathy.hubbard@shetlandarts.org)

Support comes from Shetland’s own acclaimed Americana specialists Kansa, who last year released their excellent debut album The Rowan Tree. “Sharply played ensemble Americana, with a powerhouse vocalist who puts the blues in bluegrass” - Rolling Stone

Beyond Bonhoga: Roseanne Watt, Stoal  As part of Beyond Bonhoga, Shetland Arts’ ongoing programme of off-site exhibitions in locations across Shetland, we present Stoal, an exhibition by Roseanne Watt at The Booth in Scalloway. In a series of short filmpoems, Roseanne Watt summons up five ‘uncan’ (strange) beings who act as guardians of Shetland’s landscape, language and memory. Made with the assistance of the Kishie Wife Collective, spirits of land, sea, fire and water come together in this exhibition to observe what has been, and what may yet happen. Roseanne Watt is a poet, filmmaker and musician from Shetland whose work is inspired by the landscape and language of her birthplace. She won the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award in 2018, the Outspoken Poetry Prize (Poetry in Film) in 2015 and was runner-up in the 2018 Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. She lives and works in Edinburgh.

This conference will look to the multitude and multidisciplinary research and knowledge exchange across the creative industries and creative economy, with a focus on islands, culture and heritage, and young people. We are particularly interested in proposals that look at innovation, challenges and opportunities in these areas or invite new perspectives on the perceived ‘urban and rural’ divide.

James Acaster Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK. Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.” Friday 27 September, 7.30pm  Mareel  £20 SOLD OUT

365 Stories and Music   In 2013, Scottish poet and novelist James Robertson wrote a short story every day of the year – each story was 365 words, no more, no less. This was published in 2014 by Penguin as 365: Stories Scottish fiddler and composer Aidan O’Rourke (of Lau) then matched the challenge. He wrote a new tune every day for a year in response to James’s stories. This is sparse and emotive contemporary folk music — the fiddle is paired with bold and exploratory harmonies from ECM recording artist Kit Downes on harmonium and piano. Shetland work featured in The Broadway Gallery, Letchworth A collaboration between Shetland Arts and The Broadway Gallery, Letchworth, England this month sees the work of Roseanne Watt and Rosie Gibson travelling to Hertfordshire. Their work will be featured in Letchworth alongside Weaving Ghosts, an exhibition by artist Lois Walpole, who herself has strong ties to Shetland. The exhibition tells a powerful story of our attitude to the environment, exploring the artist’s personal history to express universal issues. The work of Rosie and Roseanne re-examines Shetland’s history over the past century from a feminist perspective. Roseanne Watt is a poet, filmmaker and musician from Shetland. Her film poems explore Shetland dialect and folklore, often focusing on forgotten stories and female mythological figures. As part of her project The Kishie Wife Collective, Watt presents three films in the upstairs gallery that each depict a different spirit from Norn mythology. Alongside the films, the costumes for each film

will hang in the space as ghostly incarnations. Roseanne was the winner of the 2018 Edwin Morgan Poetry Award, the 2015 Out-Spoken Prize for Poetry in Film, and runnerup in the 2018 Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. Her first collection, Moder Dy, is published by Polygon and will be launched in Mareel this month. Rosie Gibson’s Shetland film ‘The Work They Say Is Mine’ won the Television and Radio Industries Club of Scotland (TRICS) Award in 1987. Made with an all-women crew across the Shetland in the mid-1980s, Gibson records the stories of women across the generations. The film highlights the forgotten and exploited labour of Shetland women over the 19th and 20th centuries, through interviews, archival images, and re-enacted scenes charting the history of working women in Shetland – fishing, knitting, peat carrying and crofting. Weaving Ghosts will run until 8th September.
