Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga, The Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events. Our vision is for a creative, connected Shetland that values art and culture and the transformative impact it can have on everyone’s life; a Shetland that nurtures and celebrates its own creative talents and is open to all cultures and lifestyles; a Shetland where no one feels isolated and where culture is core to ensuring the economic and social wellbeing of all its residents. Supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082). Registered office: Mareel, Lerwick, ZE1 0WQ

On Sunday 10 June Shetland will be represented at PROCESSIONS a UK-wide, mass participatory artwork celebrating 100 years since the first British women got the vote. Over the last few months Christina Inkster has been leading a series of workshops to create a banner that will be paraded through the streets of Edinburgh not only celebrating how far we have come, but reminding us of how far we have go to ensure equality and inclusion in modern Scotland. The summer blockbuster season is well and truly upon us, with Solo: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Ocean’s 8, but we always find space for the smaller gems too. Particularly worth a look this month is Edie, a moving drama about an elderly woman determined to fulfil her lifelong ambition of climbing an imposing Scottish mountain. Featuring spectacular scenery and a wonderful performance from Sheila Hancock. Those of you who were lucky enough to see Matthew Bourne’s Highland Fling in April should free up the afternoon of Sunday 24 June for his Cinderella, an ambitious and utterly spellbinding production set in London during the Second World War. Our second Beyond Bonhoga exhibition at Bressay Lighthouse featuring Amanda Welch’s remarkable maps and geographic representations moves into its second

phase with Vicki Fleck taking up residence and responding to Amanda’s work. If you are intending a visit do make time for some refreshments at the Speldiburn Café located in the former primary school. With the exhibition programme getting out and about around Shetland we continue our celebration of Shetland’s makers and crafts people with the second ShetlandMade showcase at Bonhoga. The live programme is full of exciting twists and turns this month with a celebration of brass featuring the world leading Wallace Collection, swiftly followed by the BBC’s Ten Pieces project. Jazz masters Trio HLK arrive in mid June and local hero’s First Foot Soldiers will be getting us all to party on the longest Saturday of the year. I hope you are taking advantage of the refurbished Café/Bar at Mareel and the great views it offers whilst enjoying the tipple of your choice. Enjoy!

Avril Thomson Smith  A self taught local artist, Avril’s work demonstrates her natural talent and eye for detail. Her latest collection is a series of pencil drawings of a well-known area of Lerwick, ‘Da Lodberries’. Avril writes ‘my childhood playgrounds are a constant source of inspiration for me. Growing up in Lerwick, I loved playing in the lanes and exploring at the South End; now I love drawing these places. I am fascinated by the different textures and shades, especially of the cobbles, the unusual doorways and the old stone buildings, as well the ebb and flow of the tide there. The way the light can change the atmosphere of these places is also inspiring. I am intrigued by the history of ‘Da Lodberries’. It looks like nothing much has changed over the years; there is a stillness, and sense of timelessness here. I enjoy walking and beachcombing with my daughter in this special place. ‘Bain’s Beach’ is a treasure trove of washed up trinkets; we wonder to whom they all belonged’. Avril’s drawings of this much loved part of Lerwick evoke a sense of tranquillity and calm, and are executed with close attention to detail. Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley 

The Folk Weekender BIG GIG!  

Fraser Taylor is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow. He studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017.

This summer, Shetland Arts is celebrating Folk and traditional music at The Folk Weekender – a four-day festival from Thursday 5 to Sunday 8 July of sessions, gigs, workshops and more at Mareel. Kevin Henderson will be joined by Kris Drever and Laura–Beth Salter, alongside local musicians Maurice Henderson and Margaret Robertson and more to be announced, to play, learn and share all things folk.

Between 2013 and 2014 he spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light. He was also moved by John J. Graham’s 1987 novel Shadowed Valley, which tells the harrowing tale of one family in Weisdale and how they and their extended community’s lives were decimated by the evictions and land clearances of the nineteenth century.

Join us at The Folk Weekender Big Gig on Saturday 7th July to see Kevin, Kris and Laura-Beth in action on stage at Mareel.

This series of suspended textile works was created for Fraser’s exhibition Shadowed Valley, at Bonhoga Gallery in 2015 after which it was gifted to Shetland Arts. Opening on Monday 2 July  Mareel Café Bar  FREE

I’m With Her  An impromptu show in 2014 at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO, sparked the formation of I’m With Her and sent the trio touring the world together the next year. Along the way, I’m With Her formed a special, family-like chemistry, garnering acclaim for their unique blend of instrumental interplay combined with their indelible harmonies, as the New York Times describes, “... that could be sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.” Their debut album, See You Around, was recorded in Box, England, with Ethan Johns at Real World Studios. Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.

Bonhoga promotes the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft through a programme of curated retail, exhibition and showcase opportunities, delivered from the main gallery space and supplementary retail areas. Supporting over 70 established and emerging artists, designers and makers, Bonhoga offers a unique opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of contemporary applied art, craft and print.

SCREEN

Screenplay 2018 

The Lone Bellow 

Shetland’s annual film festival is curated by celebrated film historian Linda Ruth Williams and film critic Mark Kermode, alongside our own Kathy Hubbard.

Returning to Shetland after an acclaimed sold-out show at Mareel in January 2016, The Lone Bellow burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 2013. The Brooklyn-based band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base. It’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award.

It features a feast of film screenings, lectures and panel discussions involving national and international film industry professionals and film academics. Screenplay also has a strong local flavour, provided by the work of local film makers of all ages, and an outreach programme taking in community halls and education.

Please note: over 14s only and under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Saturday 25 August – Sunday 2 September

So I am relishing the chance to talk with visitors, whether they’re here by accident or design (I lie in wait like a spider waiting to pounce on innocent walkers or lighthouse enthusiasts), other’s observations feed into whatever will come next. A shipping agent from Voe pointed out that in Lochs of Shetland the landmass is defined by its freshwater, instead of the usual saltwater (coastline). I love that idea – it adds to the inward looking feel the piece has for me. And then today - I’d been talking about my so-far unbodied notions about boxes: Shetland in a box and then Foula and Fair Isle – came another good thought (from Dunrossness), that the rectangles representing the map overlaps in Retractable Shetland are also boxes of sorts. This is useful because it reminds me of my abandoned effort to include inserts (as well as overlaps) – I shall revisit that idea. Throughout June installation artist Vicki Fleck will be in residence at the lighthouse and will create work in response to Amanda’s show.
