Welcome to June. I feel I say this most months, it’s exciting times at Shetland Arts. It’s a bittersweet time with some staff moving on, new staff arriving and familiar faces coming back from university for the summer. Beyond Bonhoga, our nomadic contemporary art programme, returns to Lerwick in June with Sixteen. A powerful series of portraits and testimonies shown
on the hoardings surrounding the new Hjaltland Housing development on King Harald St in Lerwick, with an accompanying audio-visual component in Mareel. Photographer Craig Easton conceived this ambitious touring exhibition in collaboration with sixteen-yearolds at the time of the Scottish independence referendum. It was the first, and as yet only time in the United Kingdom sixteen-year-olds have been given the vote and the portraits and text create visual vox pops on what it means to be sixteen now. The second ShetlandMade exhibition opens at Bonhoga featuring Bill Brown, Helen Robertson, Just Shetland, Gilly B, Margaret Hamilton and Rolo. These showcases are proving extremely popular with visitors and locals alike and are a great opportunity to support Shetland based makers. Our outlet

creative LABS Portrait Photography with Craig Easton A workshop with internationally acclaimed photographer Craig Easton providing an introduction to portrait photography.
SIXTEEN What is it like to be sixteen years old now? Photographer Craig Easton conceived this ambitious project following his engagement with sixteen-year olds at the time of the Scottish Referendum. It was the first, and as yet, only time that these young people were given the vote in the UK. Building on the success of that work he invited 16 of the UK’s foremost documentary portrait photographers to collaborate with young people across the country to make a visual vox pop on what it means to be sixteen now. The show includes portraits from Shetland alongside those from across the UK.
You will: • Have an introduction to Craig’s work and that of other portrait photographers • Explore ideas of composition, lighting and location in portrait photography • Create a series of your own digital portraits under Craig’s tutelage • View and critique your work as a group No prior experience is necessary but please bring a camera (this can be phone, SLR etc). There is an advisory lower age limit of 16 for this lab. The session will run from 10am - 1pm including a short break.

Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme.
1h47
Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century, and had a huge impact on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. Visiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and then creating his own image of Japan, through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists, Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction.

Brilliantly capturing a remarkable performer near the peak of her prodigious power, this is a thrilling must-watch documentary for Aretha Franklin fans.
This intriguing drama probes the allures and pitfalls of modern celebrity with intelligence, visual style and a fearless performance from Natalie Portman.
In January 1972, Aretha Franklin gave two days of gospel performances at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Watts, Los Angeles, recording what would become her best selling album, Amazing Grace. The sessions were captured by a film crew led by Sydney Pollack, but the footage wound up in a vault and became one of the lost cinematic treasures of twentieth-century music. Until now.
When teenager Celeste sings at a memorial service after surviving a violent event, it marks the beginning of her transformation into a global superstar and the loss of privacy and innocence that that entails. Decades later, Celeste is a formidable musical icon, forced to stage a comeback following a scandal which almost ended her career.

Front Country Front Country is an acclaimed acoustic band from California, fronted by gifted singer and songwriter Melody Walker with her huge bluesy voice. The quintet is based on bluegrass instrumentation but draws on a broad palette of country, blues, Americana and jazz influences. Front Country has become renowned as a storming live act on the US festival scene over the last few years, after winning the band competition at Colorado’s Rockygrass festival in their early days. They refer to their style as “roots-pop” which goes some way to describing their wide-ranging but majestic and accessible sound. Now based in Nashville, this entertaining five-piece is packed with instrumental and songwriting talent, including Jacob Groopman (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Darrow (double bass), Adam “Roscoe” Roszkiewicz (mandolin/ vocals) and Leif Karlstrom (fiddle). Support comes from Shetland’s own acclaimed Americana specialists Kansa, who last year released their excellent debut album The Rowan Tree. “Sharply played ensemble Americana, with a powerhouse vocalist who puts the blues in bluegrass” - Rolling Stone

Shoormal Conference The Centre for Rural Creativity at Shetland College UHI and Shetland Arts Development Agency are inviting creative practitioners, researchers, professionals and arts organisations to join us in exploring, creating and debating creative practice and collaboration in the creative economy. This conference will look to the multitude and multidisciplinary research and knowledge exchange across the creative industries and creative economy, with a focus on islands, culture and heritage, and young people. We are particularly interested in proposals that look at innovation, challenges and opportunities in these areas or invite new perspectives on the perceived ‘urban and rural’ divide.
Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for largescale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles.
Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the southfacing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.
Responses to the call should be submitted by email to shoormalconference@uhicloud.ac.uk by Monday 27 May.
Wednesday 18 - Saturday 21 Sep Mareel
Bonhoga promotes the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft through a programme of curated retail, exhibition and showcase opportunities, delivered from the main gallery space and supplementary retail areas. Supporting over 70 established and emerging artists, designers and makers, Bonhoga offers a unique opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of contemporary applied art, craft and print.

365 Stories and Music In 2013, Scottish poet and novelist James Robertson wrote a short story every day of the year – each story was 365 words, no more, no less. This was published in 2014 by Penguin as 365: Stories Scottish fiddler and composer Aidan O’Rourke (of Lau) then matched the challenge. He wrote a new tune every day for a year in response to James’s stories. This is sparse and emotive contemporary folk music — the fiddle is paired with bold and exploratory harmonies from ECM recording artist Kit Downes on harmonium and piano. Volume 1 was released in 2018, Volume 2 will be released in August 2019
