WELCOME
This will be my fifth March in Shetland and I have decided this is my favourite time of year. From the days in early February when no longer need to turn a light on in the morning, to new shoots and bulbs begining to push through in my neighbours wonderful garden. Not long now till the daffodils begin to guide my way to work like a roadside highlighter pen. But enough of me attempting to wax lyrical and down to business. If you have not yet had a chance to go and see Natural Selection at the old Anderson High School, please do so. It is a great exhibition that has eggcited a lot of guests and closes on Sunday 10 March.. Islesburgh Photographic Club’s exhibition at
Bonhoga also continues through March until 17 March. The Scottish Ensemble return to Shetland on the 15 March with Continental Drift, a program celebrating what can be achieved when the talents of the Western Classical tradition are challenged by breathless virtuosity of contemporary Persia and the Mediterranean. The 20 March sees the winners of 2018s BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Best Duo Shetlander Chris Stout and Catriona McKay bring their new album ‘Bare Knuckle’ to Mareel. Early March sees the Garrison host the annual Shetland County Drama Festival, a great chance to

enjoy the range of great talent we have in Shetland. Our very popular Wellbeing sessions continue through March and if you have ever thought of entering a film into Homemade at Screenplay I can highly recommend signing up for the Intro into Film Making led by Keiba Clubb. The design team have been complaining these introductions are getting to long, so I best sign off and let you explore everything I haven’t mentioned.

Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley
Andy Holden & Peter Holden: Natural Selection
Fraser Taylor is an interdisciplinary artist based in Glasgow. He studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017.
Observing a blackbird building a nest in the garden of his parents’ house several years ago, artist Andy Holden began an extended conversation about the nest as an overlooked aspect of bird life with his father, eminent ornithologist Peter Holden.
Between 2013 and 2014 he spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light. He was also moved by John J. Graham’s 1987 novel Shadowed Valley, which tells the harrowing tale of one family in Weisdale and how they and their extended community’s lives were decimated by the evictions and land clearances of the nineteenth century.
This developed into Natural Selection, a collaborative exhibition of objects, sculpture and videos, commissioned by Artangel, an organisation that produces and presents extraordinary art in unexpected places in London, across the UK and around the world. A stunning exhibition for all the family, Shetland Arts is delighted to be hosting Natural Selection at the old Anderson High School site in Lerwick. Open Wednesday - Sunday - 11:00 - 17:00 - FREE Access is via the main entrance at the old Anderson High School, Lovers Loan, Lerwick. Fully wheelchair accessible. Islesburgh Photographic Club exhibition For our first exhibition in the main gallery at Bonhoga for 2019 we have an exhibition of photographs from Islesburgh Photographic Club. This is a mixed show of work from current members, focussing largely on Shetland and its landscape and environment. All of the group’s members reside in Shetland and vary from young and old, and novice to semi-professional photographers. Islesburgh Photographic Club formed in 1950 amalgamating two existing clubs. Having access to darkrooms in its location at Islesburgh Community Centre allowed developing and printing in black and white as well as colour processing. Over the years the facilities have improved and expanded, mostly due to the hard work and innovation of the members, however, more recently have lost access to a darkroom. The Club has seen many changes over the years and overcome certain challenges, not least the introduction of the digital camera. However, as improvements to the standard and quality of digital cameras, computer software and printers are made, the quality of images, which was so high with conventional film, is no longer compromised. The group meet regularly from October through to May and are always looking to welcome new members.

The Price of Everything (12A)
1h59
With Choreographer Diane Legget
A hilarious and unnerving look at how the contemporary art market became so lucrative.
Come along and learn the dance stage craft of musical theatre to the amazing songs from The Greatest Showman! This workshop is all about fun whilst concentrating on performance techniques. We will work on routines from this hit musical. This is a follow on class from the previous workshop in February but don’t worry, if you’ve not attended, come along and join in.
The film features interviews with a number of significant artists and those who buy their works, though the most compelling contributions come from dealers who conspire to keep work expensive and in the hands of private investors, away from public view. Presenting some of the most celebrated art works of the 20th century, the exhibition on screen is a delight in itself.

Continental Drift: Scottish Ensemble with Keyvan Chemirani
Musicians from the UK’s leading string orchestra are joined by three exceptional instrumentalists for an inventive performance of Eastern, Western and improvised music. What happens when you blend the music of the old European masters with the breathless virtuosity of contemporary Persia and the Mediterranean? Keyvan Chemirani, Bijan Chemirani and Sokratis Sinopoulos are exceptional musicians: intuitive, agile and inventive. Together they explore the connections between the music of Baroque Europe and the Eastern musical traditions of the same era; the results are astonishing, shedding new light on history, music and our perceptions of both. For Continental Drift, they’ll join Scottish Ensemble musicians for a performance bonding east and west, learning and improvisation, intuition and precision, freedom and control. Seated close to the action, this is a chance not only to experience the impressive mastery of multiple instruments at close quarters, but to enter a brand new sound world, created next to you, in real time; a world of melodic warmth, rhythmic verve, playful energy and exotic flair. Keyvan Chemirani learnt the zarb (Persian drum) at the hand of his father, the internationally-renowned zarb virtuoso Djamchid Chemirani, with whom he and his brother Bijan still perform as part of the Chemirani Ensemble. For this concert, Keyvan and Bijan will play the zarb whilst their friend and collaborator Sokratis Sinopoulos takes up the lyra fiddle, a small bowed instrument from Greece. Scottish Ensemble is the UK’s leading string orchestra; a group of outstanding musicians championing music for strings. Led by violinist Jonathan Morton, SE crosses genres, styles, musical periods and art forms to create new connections and offer new perspectives, whilst delivering rewarding live performances of the highest quality. Performing across Scotland, the UK and internationally, SE is becoming increasingly known for its bold and adventurous collaborations with artists from other art forms, so far including contemporary dance, theatre and visual art. Shetland Folk Frenzy
CASH – A Tribute to Johnny Cash
Aly Bain & Phil Cunningham
A week of workshops, concerts, sessions and masterclasses, Folk Frenzy is curated by renowned Shetland fiddler, Kevin Henderson and will run from Sunday 14 – Friday 19th July 2019.
Widely regarded as the UK’s most authentic tribute to Johnny Cash, CASH, return to Shetland for the 5th time within the last decade having previously played to over 6000 islanders including sold out shows at the Clickimin Centre, Mareel and Party On The Pier in Yell.
Aly and Phil have become a national institution with their incomparable mastery of fiddle and accordion. Individually they pursue other ventures in performance, television, and education but it is when they tour together that they truly shine with over a quarter of a century of well-honed skills and hilarious banter delighting audiences everywhere.
After taking a break for 2018 Fiddle Frenzy has been developed into Folk Frenzy, still with a significant fiddle focus but broadening the festival out to include other aspects of folk music and explore how the Shetland Fiddle tradition fits in with the rest of the traditional music scene elsewhere in the world. Folk Frenzy 2019 sees the addition of international names to the tuition mix, and the introduction of an ‘ensemble’ class, alongside the fiddle classes to widen the festival out to other musicians and instruments who wish to know more about the Shetland Tradition.
CASH singer Ben Welburn carry’s off the role of the legendary “Man in Black” effortlessly due to having the same brooding looks as the young Johnny Cash, but also, more importantly, the same distinctive baritone vocals of the man he pays tribute to. Expect to hear all the Johnny Cash classics including Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line and Ring Of Fire amongst many others. Support for the show comes from local rockabillys, Isaac Webb Trio.

James Acaster
Shetland Youth Theatre celebrating 25 years!
Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK. Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. The next day I was asked to name my new show. Come along.”
Shetland Youth Theatre has been producing exciting, challenging and imaginative performances for 25 years! Productions have been diverse, from plays written specifically for the company, to adaptations of Shakespeare, Shetland Dialect works, musicals and a wide range of site-specific performances, participants have travelled with productions to Inverness, Dublin, London and Copenhagen.
