So I nearly burnt down my shed at the weekend. During wordplay 2018 we had a talk from James Morton which included some instructions on the joys of cold smoking. As an upshot of this talk, I have been cold smoking anything that will stay still long enough, I have even attempted to make smoked fudge from cold-smoked sugar. Anyway, this went really wrong, and on Sunday morning it took me a moment to realise the pile of ash on the floor was my smoker, so I am sad, but feel I have learned a valuable lesson!
2
I suppose the point of the above introduction is how we can all be inspired by art and culture to learn and try new things, for good and bad and although Mark Beaumont’s talk hasn’t inspired me to cycle the world, I am quite glad my bikes didn’t go up in flames. Scottish Opera are joining us in early March for a bumper crop of operatic highlights, if you have never experienced a live opera this is the perfect introduction to what is a great art form. If that feels a little sedate for you then maybe Elephant Sessions is more your thing as they make a welcome return to Shetland on 6 March. Early April sees us hosting Red Note Ensemble with Raman Mundair for a voyage through sound, music and the spoken word. Shetlander Neil Georgeson will be joining us mid-April for a night inspired by traditional storytelling. Back in November we launched a new strand of work, Soup and a Show, which has proved very successful and the final show of this pilot run is planned for Thursday 12 March and will feature Shetland dialect poetry, brought to you by Shetland Forwirds. I promise to be more and health and safety conscious in March.

Scottish Chamber Orchestra String Ensemble Soar into your summer with The Scottish Chamber Orchestra String Ensemble and a delightfully varied evening of music by Medelssohn, Bach, Bach, Bartók and more, featuring Jonian Ilias-Kadesha (Director/Violin) and Philip Higham (Cello). We open the evening with a work by child genius and musical pioneer Felix Mendelssohn, and move to one of Bach’s Inventions and Sinfonias, a collection of works originally composed to develop the piano technique of his son. ‘They attract each other, reject each other, love and hate each other’ is how the composer Jörg Widmann describes the intense relationship between violin and cello in his short, but not always sweet, Duo series, which follows. Sallinen’s String Quartet No. 3 may have been written in 1969, but its origins lie in a far older piece of folk music; Peltoniemi Hintrik’s Funeral March. The evening continues on an upbeat note with preeminent Romanian composer’s George Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody. A deceptively simple stark opening for solo violin gradually builds to a fast and furious infectiously charming finale. To close, we return to the works of Bela Bartók and firstly, the rich melodies of his Five Folk Tunes before finishing with his highly original Divertimento. Color Out Of Space The first film in our new Screen Extremes strand is an over-the-top sci-fi/horror hybrid based on a story by HP Lovecraft, directed by cult filmmaker Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil, Jodorowsky’s Dune) and starring Nicolas Cage in a deliciously unhinged performance. After a meteorite lands in the front yard of their farm, Nathan Gardner and his family find themselves battling a mutant extraterrestrial organism as it infects their minds and bodies, transforming their quiet rural life into a technicolor nightmare.

Ultima Thule Ultima Thule tells a timeless story spanning centuries, of migrants fleeing from war and persecution or seeking a better life for loved ones.
Bonhoga Gallery 25 January - 22 March ...War, violence and persecution leaves at least one in every 122 humans on the planet a refugee, internally displaced or seeking asylum. There are borders, some friendly, some not and the journey can be a hopeful adventure towards new shores and a better future or a desperate passage undertaken to anywhere to escape the place of departure, left with regret, often driven by fear‌
Lucy Woodley graduated from Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen in 1992 where she studied jewellery. She ran a successful jewellery business for 20 years based in the Highlands and now concentrates on sculptural works for galleries and private commissions.

Fictionalising his childhood ascent to stardom, and subsequent adult crash-landing into rehab and recovery, LaBeouf takes on the daring and therapeutic challenge of playing a version of his own father, an ex-rodeo clown and a felon. Director Alma Har’el’s feature narrative debut is a one-of-a-kind collaboration between filmmaker and subject, exploring art as therapy and imagination as hope. Sun 1 Mar 5pm
