One of the great joys of my job is the diversity of what we do. One of the challenges is how we communicate this range of events, workshops and exhibitions effectively. I hope this new week by week design will not only help you find what you are looking for, but also discover something new, something that will excite and inspire you. We are experimenting with two different formats of What’s on Guide this month looking for your feedback on which one to adopt. One is a calendar fold, the other a more traditional booklet style. Please do let us know what you think, either by emailing admin@shetlandarts. org or by letting a Front of House assistant know what you think. Shetland Folk Festival kicks off our month with six performances in Mareel, whilst folk enthusiasts should also note the 30th for a performance by the anarchic and gutsy Lankum. We are hosting a mini festival of Children’s Theatre with Baba Yaga and Eddie and the Slumber Sisters in mid May and Beyond Bonhoga heads to Bressay Lighthouse for an exhibition by Amanda Welch. Dance fans should look out for the film screening of Akram Khan’s bewitching interpretation of Giselle on the 13th.
The Mareel Café Bar will be closed from the 7th - 11th so we can carry out essential maintenance, but you will still be able to get teas, coffees and a limited range of drinks and snacks from the event bar in the foyer. a showcase of contemporary applied art & craft from Shetland Bonhoga is celebrating craft and its role in Shetland’s culture and economy with a programme of three showcase exhibitions featuring some of Shetland’s most popular and talented practitioners. Each showcase will feature six local artists, designers and makers, and will include new work, current ranges and one off larger pieces. It is a unique opportunity for visitors to engage with craft and learn what inspires our local designers and makers. It is also an opportunity to purchase from a large and diverse collection of high quality craft. For the duration of the showcase we will feature one maker per week on our website and social media channels. This feature will complement the showcase and provide further details on the maker and their practice. We are very excited about this opportunity for Shetland makers. We recognise Craft as an art form, as well as a growing creative industry, and our artists, designers and makers play a key role in the local creative community. With an increase in demand for local work, we are keen to increase our support of this sector by establishing a retail and exhibition platform for craft at Bonhoga. Shetland Young Promoters are supported by Shetland Arts and organise events in conjunction with promoters, technical crews and music industry professionals to learn about aspects of event management.
Professor Phillip Goodman, psychologist and arch-sceptic, has his rationality tested to the hilt when he stumbles across a longlost file containing details of three terrifying ‘hauntings’. Shaken by what he reads, Goodman embarks on a mission to find rational explanations for these ghostly tales.
The Shetland Young Fiddler of the Year brings together many of Shetland’s talented young fiddlers to showcase their music. Contemporary and traditional Shetland tunes are performed at the prize-winner’s concert before judges Iain Williamson, Linda Gair and Jennifer Wrigley.

Life Drawing
Musical Theatre Master Classes in association with Shetland Arts present a brand new project bringing professional theatre classes to Shetland. West End performer Francesca Leyland, and choreographer Diane Legget have a wealth of experience in the performing arts industry and both originate from the Shetland islands.
These popular sessions have been running successfully at Mareel for the past three years, with artists of all abilities enjoying the chance to practise drawing a real life nude model. The informal classes encourage participants to relax and enjoy their art, working with their own materials on poses led by the model.
Mary Poppins Themed Musical Workshop With Choreographer Diane Legget. Amanda Welch is a London-based artist whose practice has moved from painting through to mixed-media installation and assemblage. She first visited Shetland in 2005, and the landscape has become the subject of much of her work since. Amanda uses maps in unexpected ways to engage with particular aspects of place. She will be resident at the lighthouse throughout May and sees this exhibition as a work in progress. During June, Glasgow-based artist Vicki Fleck will be in residence at the lighthouse and will create work in response to Amanda’s show. Opening Event: Saturday 5 May, 11am - 1pm Free
Another engrossing drama from Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda (Our Little Sister, After the Storm). Criminal lawyer Shigemori takes on the defence of murder-robbery suspect Misumi. The case seems clear-cut – Misumi admits his guilt, despite facing the death penalty if he is convicted. As Shigemori digs deeper into the case, however, he begins to doubt whether his client is the murderer after all.

Processions PROCESSIONS is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a mass participation artwork to celebrate one hundred years of votes for women. On Sunday 10th of June, women and girls in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London will walk together as part of this celebratory mass participation artwork. Wearing either green, white or violet, the colours of the suffrage movement, the PROCESSIONS will appear as a flowing river of colour through the city streets. Women* in Shetland are invited to take part - come along to one of the drop-in workshops led by local artist Christina Inkster. Processions Workshop 1 By Christina Inkster For the first banner-making workshop we had an intimate group of 5, including myself. We began the session by talking about the Suffragette movement; putting our feet in the shoes of these women. This gave us perspective on the then and the now, reflecting and comparing similarities and differences, and highlighting factors important to the individual women and those that applied to the group as a whole:
“Having a voice: to be heard.” Conversation then navigated towards the personal; what does it mean to be a woman? What does it mean to be a woman within Shetland? This brought up conflicting contrasts between: the real and the expected (what may be expected of us as women versus what we may expect for ourselves); community and isolation (the power of belonging to a community versus the power of being isolated from a community); strength and vulnerability (conflicting states of being depending on circumstance; the “ebb and flow” of life). This poetic sentiment of “ebb and flow” spoke true within the group. There is an “ebb and flow” with life as there is with the island as its own being. We respond to its motions and react accordingly:

Last month we screened the Bolshoi’s sumptuous production of Giselle; here, English National Ballet bring us a very different take, hailed as ‘a masterpiece of 21st century dance’. Giselle has been re-imagined by celebrated choreographer Akram Khan, with Artistic Director and Lead Principal of English National Ballet, Tamara Rojo, dancing the role of Giselle, one of a community of migrant workers cast out of their jobs in a condemned garment factory.

Birds of Chicago
with support from Arthur Nicholson. Presented by Ragged Wood. Birds of Chicago are bringing their brand of soulful Americana to Shetland for a fullband show in support of their new album Love in Wartime in May. The acclaimed husband-and-wife led band are fronted by singer-songwriters JT Nero and Allison Russell, who recently relocated to Nashville, and have been described by No Depression magazine as delivering “near perfect Americana” sounds. Drawing heavily on rock and roll and the gospel tradition, in 2016 Birds of Chicago released the Joe Henry-produced album Real Midnight and since forming in late 2012 have toured around 200 nights a year: “Singing for a room full of new people, hearts wide open, keeps off the cold and chases off the shadows.”

Review: Student Night

Mareel hosted the second Student Night of the academic year on Thursday night. Nine music students of different levels performed a set, displaying a massive range of genres, styles and instruments. First up was Callum McLeaskintosh. Playing two original songs, he showed his versatility with a soft melodic tune followed by Grandma’s Gobsmacked, a much rougher and harder song. Lewis Hall had the next set and covered Def Leppard and Danzig songs to an impressed audience. Joined by Ian Priest, Scott Priest and Ewan Moncrieff, their stage presence was as exciting as their song choice.
Amy Gear & 300 artists from 5 Shetland Schools:
Unexpected Sites Unexpected Sites is the third project in a four-year gallery education programme supported by Children & the Arts as part of their Start Programme, delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. The project involves five target schools in Shetland: Sandwick JH School, Aith JH School (including Skeld Primary), Fetlar Primary School, Brae JH School and Whalsay School, working with a total of c.300 pupils from 5-14 years of age. Amy Gear has been working with pupils from each school to explore their surroundings in two and three dimensions, mapping journeys and unexpected sites along the way. Opening Event: Wednesday 23 May, 6 - 7.30pm Free Beyond Bonhoga is a programme of visual art exhibitions in new and exciting locations around Shetland. A big change in styles came next, with Natalie Cairns-Ratter wowing the violin fans in the room with her version of the first part of Romantic Pieces by composer Antonin Dvorak. Zdenka Mlynarikova overlapped sets with Natalie, playing Always on My Mind with her. Zdenka then played an original about her love for music called Strings and Soul. Along with Brydon Sales, David Mainland and Leah Setrice, Scott Priest opened his set with Californication. For the next segment of Scott’s set, he was joined by Josh Smith, Lewis Hall, David Mainland and Brydon Sales. Singer Leah Setrice then performed three songs packed with attitude. A highlight was when she was joined by Brydon Sales, Scott Priest and Ewan Moncrieff for an original called Cheater. Brydon, Scott and Ewan stayed on stage afterwards for Brydon’s set. Playing Iron Clad Lou, they mesmerised the spectators before hitting them with a heavy breakdown. The night wound up with a set from guitarist Ewan Moncrieff who played two songs. One of the standout performances of the night was when he was joined by Ian Priest, Brydon Sales, Scott Priest and Lewis Hall for a rendition of Pearl Jam’s Jeremy. The live scene is in safe hands with this generation and the huge mix of genres and styles suggests a phenomenal range of music will remain available for the foreseeable future.

Lankum Lankum are one of the most talked about bands to come out of Ireland in decades. They’re a Dublin four-piece who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, accordion, fiddle and guitar. Fred MacAulay: 30 Years On In 1998, Fred MacAulay made his stand up debut at Mayfest’s “So you think you’re funny” competition in Glasgow with five minutes of his own comedy material. Much of what Fred talked about that night was about his family, coupled with wry observations about society and politics - themes which Fred’s fans will be familiar with. His observations have led him to success on television and radio, on the live circuit and comedy festivals worldwide. Their music features dense, complex rhythms and textures, and virtuosic improvisation. Trio HLK’s music sounds genuinely fresh, and genuinely new.

They are teaming up with one of Shetland’s Americana favourites, Laura Cortese and the Dance Cards, for a double bill. Both artists will perform a full set.

I’m With Her
Screenplay 2018
An impromptu show in 2014 at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO, sparked the formation of I’m With Her and sent the trio touring the world together the next year. Along the way, I’m With Her formed a special, family-like chemistry, garnering acclaim for their unique blend of instrumental interplay combined with their indelible harmonies, as the New York Times describes, “... that could be sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.” Their debut album, See You Around, was recorded in Box, England, with Ethan Johns at Real World Studios.
Shetland’s annual film festival is curated by celebrated film historian Linda Ruth Williams and film critic Mark Kermode, alongside our own Kathy Hubbard. It features a feast of film screenings, lectures and panel discussions involving national and international film industry professionals and film academics. Screenplay also has a strong local flavour, provided by the work of local film makers of all ages, and an outreach programme taking in community halls and education.

BambinO BambinO is a first operatic adventure for six to 18-month-olds. A bird, called Uccellina, discovers an egg. The egg grows to a magical size. It hatches, revealing a baby bird, called Pulcino, who takes Uccellina for his mother. He explores the world. Uccellina tells Pulcino of the sky and its wonders, and that it is his destiny to fly the nest. Although saddened at the thought of being separated, they are soon caught up in the excitement of his imminent flight. Ready to take to the skies, the birds sing a final duet of farewell. Wordplay 2018 Shetland Arts’ annual book festival has been running since 2001. Welcoming writers of local, national and international renown, Wordplay features a mix of readings, writing workshops, children’s events, and book signings.
