WELCOME

It’s my birthday this month, I’m not sure that is particularly relevant to the introduction of the Shetland Arts What’s on Guide, but I just thought you should know! May starts with a BANG with the Shetland Folk Festival, sees us opening a new pop-up craft retail outlet at Sumburgh Airport and rounds off with a new series of Creative Lab workshops focused on acting and performance skills.

May and June are looking very exciting all round! We would like to congratulate Roseanne Watt on the launch of her new poetry collection Moder Dy in Edinburgh this month and are looking forward to launching it here in Shetland in June! June also sees our first rural tour this year, visiting The Sail Laft in Skeld, Quendale Water Mill in Dunrossness and The Booth at Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary. ‘From Time to Time at Sea’ is a film by artist Ruth Maclennan made between 2012-2015 and shot on and around Orkney, Fair Isle and Shetland, from boats, the tops of cliffs, on beaches and along winding roads. The shows will also feature Margaret Tait’s Portrait of Ga programmed alongside a selection of locally made footage from the Shetland Film Archive presented by Maya Darrell Hewins.

Whether it is Film, Art, Music or the Performing Arts this is your guide to Shetland Arts and its venues. Please be aware that, due to the flexible nature of programming, some details may be subject to change.

Our new venture at Sumburgh Airport is due to open mid-May. This is a great opportunity for us to build upon our support for Shetland’s craft scene as well as contributing to a warm welcome for visitors. Besides the craft collections, you will also be able to buy books published by the Shetland Times Bookshop, local soap from Shetland Soap Company and book tickets from our Shetland Arts Box Office. In other crafting news, the next ShetlandMade will open at Bonhoga on Saturday 25 May. So if you haven’t had a chance to visit the first ShetlandMade yet get down to Weisdale and use the opportunity to purchase one of our lovely Bonhoga scones. I hope you have as lovely a May as I am planning to.

At Eternity’s Gate (12A)

 2h27

Willem Dafoe is superb in this vivid biopic that focuses on the final months in the life of Vincent Van Gogh.

Directed by Ralph Fiennes and starring world class ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko, this thrilling drama tells the extraordinary story of Rudolf Nureyev, whose defection from the Soviet Union to the West stunned the world.

 2h11

Living hand to mouth in the south of France, Van Gogh is extremely productive but fails to connect with the locals, who taunt him. The beauty of the country around him continues to inspire him, even as his daily life and very survival become more difficult. Using natural settings, director Julian Schnabel successfully evokes the artist’s unique way of seeing the world.

The White Crow (12A)

With his magnetic presence, Rudolf Nureyev emerged as ballet’s most famous star, a wild and beautiful dancer limited by the world of 1950s Leningrad. His flirtation with Western artists and ideas led him into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse with the KGB at the height of the Cold War.

Ailish Tynan and Hebrides Ensemble from Perth Concert Hall   This lunchtime concert from Hebrides Ensemble and soprano Ailish Tynan is being live-streamed from Perth Concert Hall to venues and halls all over Scotland, to allow remote audiences to watch as a community. At the heart of this programme is Maurice Ravel’s Chansons Madécasses, which depicts life and challenging events in Madagascar. Judith Weir’s partner piece to the Ravel, Nuits d’Afrique, uses poetry by contemporary African women. Morpheus is a beautiful, lyrical piece from hugely under-appreciated English composer Rebecca Clarke, whose style of writing was at times compared to Ravel and Debussy; young American composer Rosalie Burrel’s Early Light evokes indigenous North America, and Ravel’s Chansons Madécasses is balanced by the wit and charm of compatriot Jean Francaix’s String Trio. Final Ascent: The Legend Of Hamish MacInnes (PG)

The Australian Ballet: Spartacus (12A)

A poignant tribute to one of the most significant Scottish mountaineers of the 20th century.

Think ballet is all pointe shoes and tutus? Think again.

 1h41

The legend of Hamish MacInnes began early. At 16 he climbed the Matterhorn. At 17 he built his first motor car – from scratch. He attempted Everest in 1953 and almost stole the peak before Hillary and Tenzing. As an explorer, expedition leader and engineer he achieved world fame. But at the age of 84, he was institutionalised against his will, suffering from delirium. This film tells the story of his greatest challenge: to recover his memories and rescue himself.

 2h55

Spartacus tells the story of a gladiator who led a slaves’ rebellion against the Roman empire. Charting the journey of a man finding passionate love, his mission and freedom, the ballet showcases the company at their spirited and athletic best. Created especially for The Australian Ballet and captured live at the Sydney Opera House.

A Private War (15)

Rafiki (12A)

 2h10

 1h42

A superbly atmospheric chiller from Ireland.

Back by popular demand, this powerful drama based on the extraordinary life of celebrated war correspondent Marie Colvin.

Sarah and her young son Chris move to a new home in the Irish countryside, next to a forest that hides an enormous sinkhole. One night, Chris vanishes, and when he reappears, he seems unharmed and unchanged. But, as his behaviour grows increasingly disturbing, Sarah begins to fear that the boy who has returned may not be her son at all.

Colvin (Rosamund Pike, giving a superb performance) is an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, driven to the front lines of conflicts across the globe to give voice to the voiceless, while constantly testing the limits between bravery and bravado. Over time, however, her personal life starts to unravel as the trauma she’s witnessed takes its toll.

The first Kenyan film to screen at the Cannes Film Festival, Rafiki follows the story of two teenage girls, Kena and Ziki, whose friendship blossoms into romance and who must then face the hostility of their community.

 1h50

With great performances and colourful cinematography, Rafiki explores the complexities of forbidden love in modern-day Kenya. In Swahili with English subtitles.
