November is here which means we are not far from the start of WordPlay. I am really pleased with the line up of authors that the team have brought together this year. Amy Liptrot’s novel is being passed around amongst the Shetland Arts staff team and there is a lot of excitement about her appearance on Saturday 10 November. I am really looking forward to Friday 9 and an evening of challenge around what we want our society to be with Jo Swinson’s look at equality, followed by AC Grayling’s investigation into the current democratic failings. My thanks goes out to RSM for sponsoring the evening. WordPlay, as always, features some great local authors. Malachy Tallack’s travel writing workshop has already sold out, if you missed out on tickets he will be discussing his Shetland based novel with Susan Wyndham on Saturday 10. Robert Alan Jamieson and John Goodlad will also be discussing their work during WordPlay and for the younger members of the family, we have Ann Marie Anderson. A Literary Feast! If literature isn’t your thing we continue to provide a wide range of events from a sold-out ABBA party night to Shetlanders Neil Georgeson and Sophie Rocks exploring the classical tradition of piano and harp. Open Door Drama’s production of Fiddler on the Roof gets underway in the Garrison if you fancy some theatre. I am sure you are as excited as I am about the foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary
lead singer Freddie Mercury in the film Bohemian Rhapsody! Other features include First Man from La La Land director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling telling the riveting story of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. J.K.Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts is back with Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald which sees Albus Dumbledore enlist his former student Newt Scamander to battle the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. We mark the centenary of the end of the First World War on 11 November with a special free screening of In the Still of the Night Have We Wept, Shetland Youth Theatre’s intense and moving 2017 drama inspired by the human stories of the war. I look forward to seeing you at something in November.

Steve Birrell Photography
Fraser Taylor: Shadowed Valley
Steve Birrell is a local amateur landscape photographer, inspired by the weather, the colours and the amazing light in Shetland at all times of the year. His photography encourages him to explore Shetland, discovering beautiful places that he didn’t know existed, he writes “My favourite time of day for capturing Shetland is the golden hour, just before the sun sets; the light then can transform the landscape.”
Fraser studied painting at Glasgow School of Art and printmaking at Royal College of Art in London in the 1980s before establishing the internationally acclaimed textile company The Cloth. He was Adjunct Professor of Textile Art at the Institute of Art in Chicago before moving back to Scotland in 2017. He spent several months in The Booth (Scalloway) and found himself inspired by Shetland’s largely treeless landscape, the shapes of the myriad small islands, black rock strata, and the shifting colours and light.

Northbound | Nordgående Northbound | Nordgående is an exhibition of contemporary ceramics, drawing and performance with a focus on process and place, and is the work of a group of six artists from Scotland and Norway. Together, their work celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of contemporary ceramicists. The exhibition also looks to highlight the influence of place on the artists’ work, exploring in particular the cross-border, cultural connections across northern Europe and the region’s ancient and traditional maritime routes. The work is travelling North, completing its voyage at Fjell Festning Museum near Bergen in early 2019. In each new venue, the exhibition will be reconfigured by different curators, creating four versions of its own narrative.

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.
Bonhoga promotes the best of Shetland, national and international applied art and craft through a programme of curated retail, exhibition and showcase opportunities, delivered from the main gallery space and supplementary retail areas. Supporting over 70 established and emerging artists, designers and makers, Bonhoga offers a unique opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of contemporary applied art, craft and print.

Critical Feedback Workshop
5
Intended for makers to give constructive and helpful feedback on their work in progress. A group workshop for up to 8 makers, and is good for ideas, work in progress or finished pieces. Makers need only bring a few pieces rather than their whole collections (maximum 3 or 4 pieces unless it’s jewellery). The process can also be used to get feedback on branding, packaging, logos, websites or other marketing type stuff. If required more guidelines are available in advance. It would be useful if makers could consider the questions they wish to ask, but that will be dealt with as part of the workshop. It’s an enjoyable process, not scary!

The World is a Wedding, the Presentation of Unst in Everyday Life In 1948, Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman came to Unst, told everyone he was there to study the economy but, instead, studied everyone there. His research ended up in his massive bestseller The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, changing the game for sociology. Seventy years later, a cast of Shetland youth have teamed up with performance company Mammalian Diving Reflex to apply Goffman’s insights to Unstfest, UK’s most northerly festival. The Presentation of Unst in Everyday Life presents their findings. Let us present a study of you to you, hopefully with a song or two.

What happens when you blend the music of the old European masters with the breathless virtuosity of contemporary Persia and the Mediterranean? Keyvan Chemirani, Bijan Chemirani and Sokratis Sinopoulos are exceptional musicians: intuitive, agile, inventive. Together they explore the connections between the music of Baroque Europe and the Eastern musical traditions of the same era; the results are astonishing, shedding new light on history, music and our perceptions of both. For Continental Drift, they’ll join Scottish Ensemble musicians for a performance bonding east and west, learning and improvisation, intuition and precision, freedom and control. Seated close to the action, this is a chance not only to experience the impressive mastery of multiple instruments at close quarters, but to enter a brand new sound world, created next to you, in real time; a world of melodic warmth, rhythmic verve, playful energy and exotic flair. CASE STUDY
Shetland Arts Annual Summary and Customer Survey viability. Reductions in funding will remain a challenge in the coming years, but we are confident that the organisation is continuing to move in the right direction, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners, stakeholders and customers for their ongoing support” (Graeme Howell, Chief Executive)
Annual Summary 2017/2018
The last twelve months have been an exciting time for those of us connected with Shetland Arts. We have delivered over four-and-a-half-thousand concerts, screenings and exhibition days across a wide variety of art forms and genres. We continued to expand our education and wellbeing work with over two thousand development sessions being delivered and a new BA in Film Making being launched. No four page summary can provide the detail of all that we have achieved; if you’re interested, a more detailed breakdown of our activity for the year is contained in our 2017/18 Trustees’ Report and Financial Statement available from our website and venues. For the third year in a row we have made a surplus, which with ever tightening funding is an achievement we should celebrate. Our thanks go out to all our partners, our funders Creative Scotland and Shetland Charitable Trust and the Shetland Arts’ staff team who have worked with dedication and enthusiasm. Our final thanks go to all of you for supporting us - we look forward to continuing to entertain, delight and inspire you in the coming years.
Alongside the Annual Summary, we have also released the third in our rolling programme of customer feedback surveys, asking the public to comment on how they feel Shetland Arts is performing. Graeme Howell Chief Executive
Lorraine Hall Chair
We recently published our Annual Summary for 2017/18 and are pleased to announce Shetland Arts made a small operating surplus for the third year running. “We are very pleased to be able to report another year with a small surplus, this year we have managed to make a £2k surplus despite continued funding cuts. This is testament to the hard work of all the staff to ensure the organisations’ continuing financial
“It is very important to us that we know what we are getting right and where we can improve – please take a moment to fill in the survey and tell us what you think of anything from our programme and facilities to our online activity” (Esther Renwick, Acting Marketing Manager). The customer satisfaction survey is available at: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/3BB5CBV and will run until 31st October.
