Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga, The Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events. Our vision is for a creative, connected Shetland that values art and culture and the transformative impact it can have on everyone’s life; a Shetland that nurtures and celebrates its own creative talents and is open to all cultures and lifestyles; a Shetland where no one feels isolated and where culture is core to ensuring the economic and social wellbeing of all its residents. Supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082). Registered office: Mareel, Lerwick, ZE1 0WQ
Screenplay 2018 was an amazing success, from the range of guests to the diversity of films, it truly had something for everyone. Over eleven hundred young people from Shetland took part in education screenings and workshops. I especially enjoyed seeing the Shetland Arts staff team being a little starstruck when Wallace and Gromit arrived at a Q&A. August also saw Shetland Arts hold its AGM and I am really happy to report that we have made another small financial surplus. We hosted over four and a half thousand events and exhibition days between April 2017 and March 2018, everything from circus to contemporary dance, from theatre and literature to music and film. Over eighty four thousand people watched live streams or online video content that we made available during the year. Our Annual Summary provides a top level look at what we have done, and more detail is contained in our financial statement which is available on our website. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Shetland Arts staff team and volunteers for the dedication and enthusiasm that they bring to all that we do.
WordPlay 2018 (8 - 11 November) is now on sale and has a wonderful range of highly talented authors. Some who live locally and have Shetland connections like John Goodlad and Malachy Tallach and some who will be visiting us like Amy Liptrot and A. C. Grayling. Through the Wordcard you can enjoy every event for only £11 a day. I hope you are enjoying the final throes of summer and looking forward to an autumn of fun, culture and inspiration.

Northbound | Nordgående Northbound | Nordgående is an exhibition of contemporary ceramics, drawing and performance with a focus on process and place, and is the work of a group of six artists from Scotland and Norway. Together, their work celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of contemporary ceramicists. The exhibition also looks to highlight the influence of place on the artists’ work, exploring in particular the cross-border, cultural connections across northern Europe and the region’s ancient and traditional maritime routes. The work is travelling North, completing its voyage at Fjell Festning Museum near Bergen in early 2019. In each new venue, the exhibition will be reconfigured by different curators, creating four versions of its own narrative.

Callum Beattie Callum Beattie has been hard at music for almost half his life, making his own chances, taking chances and, for sure, being a chancer. The Edinburgh-born musician has progressed from “mangled” versions of Wonderwall and bad gigs in pubs straight out of Trainspotting, via stage invasions in front of 80,000 REM fans and backstage blags with Kaiser Chiefs, to where he is now: a singer-songwriter with a punchy, rousing, emotive and gloriously catchy debut album that lit up 2017. Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, who brought us 2014’s superb Ida, Cold War is a captivating portrait of a relationship between two people of different backgrounds and temperaments, who are fatally mismatched and yet fatefully condemned to each other.
An immersive, absorbing documentary about cyclist David Millar, shot during the final road races of his career.
Set against the background of the Cold War in the 1950’s in Poland, Berlin, Yugoslavia and Paris, the film beautifully depicts an impossible love story in impossible times.
This thrilling film rides alongside Millar, inside the peloton. We struggle up impossible climbs and hold our breath down rapid descents. We feel the frustration as Millar tries to pull on gloves over cold, wet hands (frustration that earned the film its 18 certificate for strong language!), and learn how it feels to know your career is over.

Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.
This new presentation traces Doug’s personal journey as he discusses how he’s seen pollution and climate change affect the natural world.

Mirrie Dancers: Neil Georgeson & Sophie Rocks
Abba Party Night 1974 Abba Tribute Show – The ultimate ABBA experience, live in concert!
Shetland-born musicians Neil Georgeson and Sophie Rocks get together for the first time for a concert of piano and harp music at Mareel. Their programme “Mirrie Dancers” features pieces inspired by the night sky and by dance music, including some folk music arrangements. They will mark Claude Debussy’s centenary with his Danse sacree et danse profane, set against more contemporary works like the Suite Galactique by French-Canadian composer Caroline Lizotte and Johannes Kreidler’s Study for piano, video and playback. The concert will also feature iconic classics by Chopin, Ravel and Liszt.
Back in 1974, Swedish pop sensations ‘ABBA’ took the world by storm! Now 40 years on, their incredible musical legacy is still celebrated around the world. Don’t miss this fantastic show featuring the unforgettable Agnetha, Frida, Benny & Bjorn. These not-so Swedish superstars previously fronted BJÖRN AGAIN for over a decade. They have been delighting audiences around the world for the last 16 years, performing ABBA’s wonderful music in their own fun and unique style.

CASE STUDY
A fabulous 12 years… looking forward to SCREEN 2019! Screenplay is over for another year, as ever showcasing films from Shetland and across the world with some amazing special guests including Timothy Spall, Nick Park of Wallace and Gromit fame, Alice Lowe and Steve Oram. The programme also included premieres and preview screenings of films not yet available in UK cinemas and a rare opportunity to see the Rosie Gibson’s 1980s Shetland drama documentary The Work They Say Is Mine. During the festival over 4000 people attended more than 40 films and 10 special events and workshops, with over 1100 pupils from 12 schools attending 14 education film screenings. This year is marking the end of an era in Screenplay’s history with the retirement of Director Kathy Hubbard. “It has been a fabulous 12 years of Screenplay. We have had some marvellous times with some very special people and some truly great films. I want to thank everyone for their support over the years – it is the audience that makes Screenplay what it is, and I’m looking forward to enjoying Screenplay 2019 as a member of the film-viewing public!” Kathy Hubbard
“Screenplay has always been a wonderful celebration of local, Scottish and International film... This is no small part due to Kathy’s enthusiasm and on behalf of Shetland Arts I would very much like to thank Kathy for her dedication to the organisation and to film-making across the Isles“. Graeme Howell, Chief Executive
Next year’s Screenplay will run from Friday 30 August – Sunday 8 September 2019.
