Well Summer didn’t last long. The cold nights are drawing in and my poor bonsai tree has had to go back under its grow lamps to survive the darker nights and days. Absolutely ideal weather to be in a lovely warm building watching a film, seeing a concert or show, maybe even taking a class, or simply relaxing with a hot drink and sweet treat looking out over the harbour. We have had an exciting time over the last couple of months, co-presenting an exhibition and poetry reading with Roseanne Watt in Letchworth, launching a slew of new classes in September and presenting Screenplay. We also held our AGM for the financial year 2018/19. During the year we welcomed over 190,000 audience members to events,

screenings and exhibitions. We sold over 71,000 tickets to see a film, over 12,000 tickets to a music event and over 7,000 tickets to attend a drama performance. We turned over £2.4million of which over 60% is generated commercially. We posted an operating surplus of £43,323, our fourth surplus in a row. You would think we would be exhausted, but no . . . . . Our education team has welcomed the 2019/20 cohorts of students to Mareel. From Vocational Pathways in Film and Music for younger students through NCs, HNCs and Degrees our education offer keeps expanding. This year we have launched three new Masters modules across the UHI network and continue to develop and demonstrate how education can be delivered at an exceptionally high level in Shetland to students all over the world. If you fancy relaxing in front of a film or two then October’s film program has something for everyone.

Apocalypse Now The Final Cut and Metallica and The San Francisco Symphony are not to be missed cinematic events in my opinion, but we are also showing Abominable and Ugly Dolls if that’s more your cup of tea. The Joker, which took the Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, opens on Friday 18th and I can not wait. I am writing this at our retail space in Sumburgh airport listening to John Goldie and the High plains new album Here and Now. John brings his band north for a special one off show at Mareel on 30 October which will feature the very considerable talents of Seonaid Aitken of Shetland favourites Rose Room. Phew, we might need a break at the end of October . . . .

Wellbeing Arts Sessions (Drop-in) 

Over the course of this year five schools across Shetland (Brae, Aith, Whalsay, Sandwick and Fetlar) have been exploring the theme of COLLECTION & ARCHIVE through the off-site contemporary visual art programme. The project has been built around visits to two exhibitions with workshops from visiting artists and makers. We’ve been thinking about why people collect things, what a collection can teach us, and we’ve been discovering what our friends like to collect at home.

Informal Arts sessions in a low pressure environment and open to all. Sessions follow the model of one hour of arts activity followed by tea, coffee and biscuits for 30 minutes. Sessions are an opportunity to meet new people, learn something new and have fun.

‘Like singing around a campfire but in a warm, safe space’ (group participant). These informal Singalong sessions are open to all.

There will be an introduction to a new craft practice at each session. Sessions will explore: Felting, Decoupage, Upcycling and Aboriginal Style Painting

COLLECTION & ARCHIVE: FAVOURITE THINGS represents the treasured possessions of all the pupils we have worked with in 2019. In years to come this may tell us more than we can possibly know right now… The START Bonhoga Education Programme is supported by national organisation Children & The Arts and delivered by Shetland Arts in partnership with SIC Creative Links. It provides young people in five local schools with the opportunity to participate in high quality arts activities, focusing on our contemporary visual art programme.

creative LABS Beyond Bonhoga:

Roseanne Watt, Stoal   As part of Beyond Bonhoga, Shetland Arts’ ongoing programme of off-site exhibitions in locations across Shetland, we present Stoal, an exhibition by Roseanne Watt at The Booth in Scalloway. In a series of short filmpoems, Roseanne Watt summons up five ‘uncan’ (strange) beings who act as guardians of Shetland’s landscape, language and memory. Made with the assistance of the Kishie Wife Collective, spirits of land, sea, fire and water come together in this exhibition to observe what has been, and what may yet happen. Roseanne Watt is a poet, filmmaker and musician from Shetland whose work is inspired by the landscape and language of her birthplace. She won the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award in 2018, the Outspoken Poetry Prize (Poetry in Film) in 2015 and was runner-up in the 2018 Aesthetica Creative Writing Award. She lives and works in Edinburgh.

Creative Labs: Life Drawing 

Storytime for under 5s  

Practice your life drawing skills and techniques with access to a real life nude model.

Thursday morning is storytime!

Participants will have: • Access to a nude model • Time to develop your life drawing skills and techniques • Access to a comfortable, well-lit workspace

In partnership with Shetland Library, we are hosting weekly storytime for the under 5s upstairs in our Café Bar. Admission is free, there’s ample space for buggy parking and we have tea, coffee and cakes in the Café downstairs!

These informal life drawing sessions give artists of all abilities the opportunity to practise using a nude model. The model will work through a series of dynamic poses, then some longer poses to allow participants to produce more detailed work. Suitable for artists used to selfdirected work - these are not tutored sessions. Participants will bring their own materials, and easels are not provided. Suitable for ages 16 years + Learn, experiment, create - Creative Labs are workshops across all art forms where the focus is on learning new skills and their practical application. Bairns’ Open 2019: Craft  The Bairns’ Open takes place every year in the Lower Gallery at the same time as the Open exhibition in the main gallery. It is open to all school age children and young adults in Shetland, from P1-S6. This year the focus is CRAFT and we are looking for all kinds of handmade craft, eg, textile pieces including knitting, weave, felt; sculpture including wood, ceramic, metal work; as well as jewellery. The piece must be no larger than A3, and 3D equivalent of A3. Three prizes are awarded and work will be displayed in the lower gallery and craft cabinets at Bonhoga from 21 Sep – 3 Nov. Deadline for entries is 7 September, with work submitted to Bonhoga or Mareel. Monday - Saturday 10:30- 17:00 Sunday 11:00 - 17:00

Shetland Open 2019: Contemporary Applied Art & Craft  The Shetland Open exhibition takes place every two years, with an exhibition of work developed by prize winners in the intervening year. The focus this year is contemporary applied art and craft and entries are welcome from amateur, professional and student artists and craft-makers aged 18 and over, who are linked to Shetland by birth, education or residency. Work is to be submitted to Bonhoga Gallery or Mareel no later than 7th September. All submissions that meet the entry criteria will be displayed in the exhibition. Applied Art and Craft work includes… Basketry & Willow Weaving, Bookbinding, Ceramics, Furniture Making & Wood Working, Glass Working, Jewellery, Leather Working, Metal Working, Millinery, Mosaics, Paper Making (paperworks and wallpaper, this does not include stationery), Silversmithing & Goldsmithing, Stone Working (carving, lettering, sculpture and plasterwork), and Textiles. James Acaster Hugely acclaimed English comedian James Acaster is bringing his seventh solo show to Mareel in September. In 2018 he was commissioned to record four hour-long stand-up specials for Netflix, has appeared on a host of leading TV panel shows and garnered a succession of awards and nominations at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 will be in residency in London’s West End for six nights in January before he takes the show the length and breadth of the UK. Here’s what he has to say about it: “One time I bought a lasagne from the supermarket, heated it up in the oven and ate a bit of it and it wasn’t very nice so I put it in the fridge because it felt wrong to dump a whole lasagne in the bin and then later on I ate a spoonful of the cold lasagne because I was drunk and it was absolutely delicious. It was 4am. I then changed the name of a WhatsApp I was a part of to COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF 1999 because I had been thinking a lot about how 1999 was the best year of my life and also about how much I hate myself sometimes. On Saturday 28th September at Walls Regatta Club Jenny Sturgeon & Hersel will perform.

These sessions will explore a range of craft styles. Get creative with Crafternoons!

After the interval each night we open the stage for you to take part so bring an instrument or just your voice and remember, participants get in for a reduced ticket price.

There will be an opportunity for participants to share what they have created with friends and family as they take what they make home with them..

Hairst Ebb and Flow The Shetland Community School of Ballet presents its annual show featuring performers from 3 to 17 years. Opening with another chance to see Stuart Hannay’s film of Peerie Mootie and her Muckle Buits, which won an award at Screen Play, leading on to the beginners’ group performing their version of this popular story by Valerie Watt.

Strip MS Again  The MS Society Shetland presents Strip MS Again, with local bands Forgotten Sons and Sidewinder. Our amazing strippers are back to put on a show with a few good men also getting waxed for you all to see! There will also be a raffle on the night. WARNING: This show may contain nudity and strobe lighting.

The pre-ballet group launch into their lively dance before the interval. The older dancers of the intermediate and senior groups start the second half with a comical ballet and an Indian piece. Then the seniors explore themes of marine wildlife and plastic pollution with some routines accompanied with live music provided by Robert Bennett and Alan McKay. This is a family show, suitable for all ages.

A special screening of Turner Prize-winning artist Charlotte Prodger’s new major single channel video work, commissioned and promoted by Scotland + Venice for the 58th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, and touring Scotland at the same time as it is being presented to audiences in Venice. The artist’s most ambitious work to date, SaF05 draws upon multiple sources – archival, scientific and diaristic – and combines footage from a number of geographical locations (the Scottish Highlands, the Great Basin Desert, the Okavango Delta and the Ionian Islands). SaF05 is named after a maned lioness that figures in the work as a cipher for queer attachment and desire. The screening will include a short film documenting the project development, and will be followed by a talk with members of the Scotland + Venice team and curator Helen Nisbet. 365 Stories and Music   Wordplay 2019 is taking on a slightly different format this year, built around the concert, workshops and installation of 365: Stories and Music, a major new collection of Scottish contemporary literature and music in one interactive sound-art installation, launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival this year and touring to Mareel in November. 365: Stories and Music brings together the genius of Scottish poet and novelist James Robertson and Scottish fiddler and composer Aidan O’Rourke of Lau. James wrote a short story every day for a year, each story comprising 365 words, this was published in 2014 by Penguin as 365: Stories. Aidan then matched the challenge. He wrote a new tune every day for a year in response to James’s stories. “I loved reading those stories: a daily dose of poetry and wisdom. And I loved the writing. The language is emotional, concise, apposite. Somehow the words and the pacing of the stories felt musical. I was intrigued by the discipline of setting such a quantifiable daily creative ritual. Would the same be possible in music…?” - Aidan O’Rourke Aidan’s response is sparse and emotive contemporary folk music — the fiddle is paired with bold and exploratory harmonies from ECM recording artist Kit Downes on harmonium and piano. This concert features Aidan and Kit performing music from the 365 Project alongside readings from James.

Shetland Youth Dance Company offers talented young dancers the opportunity to develop and refine their contemporary dance technique and choreography skills. There will be performance opportunities throughout the year as well as opportunity to work with local and visiting choreographers. Sessions will be weekly with intensives happening during holidays or weekends throughout the year.

A drop in contemporary dance class for Adults (18+ years). This accessible and energetic class will look at contemporary dance techniques. Get fit while learning different contemporary dance styles through dynamic technique exercises and phrases.

Creative Writing Cheer up these dark winter evenings. Genevieve White will take you through a relaxing session of creative writing, providing writing prompts and discussion points to help you create prose and poetry.

These sessions are aimed at those with dance experience and/or a commitment to learning.

Film Crew   Film Crew has been designed to offer young film enthusiasts opportunity for progression and development. Participants will learn how to use the equipment and develop skills in recording, lighting, directing and editing. The projects will be diverse across different genres as well as including some green screen work, animation, documentary and self shooting. Participants will learn techniques and a creative approach to filming and editing. This sets participants up for progression into the NC level course offered here at Mareel or producing their own films for fun.

Shetland Youth Theatre Company  Shetland Youth Theatre now meets weekly as well as staging intensive productions! We will be meeting weekly to develop and refine our acting skills, allowing for progression and development. This group will allow participants to have an understanding of theatre practice as well as developing a range of appropriate skills in voice, movement, acting, acting for camera and stagecraft. Participants will get an opportunity to be part of the creative process with performances and projects from local and visiting Directors throughout the year.

This class is for those with and without disabilities. The classes will be a fun and engaging way to learn theatrical skills, movement and music. We aim to introduce elements of sign language and Makaton to this class. Carers recommended to support where necessary.

Learn how to make films! Suitable for beginner - intermediate filmmakers.

Once a month on a Thursday we will be presenting Soup and a Show. Your ticket gets you a hearty bowl of soup, unlimited bannocks, tea and coffee and a 40 minute show. What better way to spend a winter lunchtime.

In this Creative Lab you will learn: • How to use equipment • Write storyboards • All the elements of good camera work You will be able to take the footage away to edit so please bring a hard drive. These will be hands on practical sessions.

The first show will be on Thursday 14th November hosted by local comedian Neil Tindall and will feature standup comedy from local Shetland comedians Miffy and James Nicol.

Aly Bain / Ale Möller / Bruce Molsky  Shetland fiddle maestro Aly Bain, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Moller, and American fiddler, singer, guitarist and banjo player Bruce Molsky unite to explore their Celtic, Nordic and Appalachian cultures. They perform in dynamic harmony, creating complex music of exhilarating diversity. Aly Bain (fiddle. viola), Ale Moller (mandola, harmonica, wooden whistle, harmony vocals), Bruce Molsky (fiddle, vocals, banjo, guitar). Aly, Ale and Bruce kick off their UK tour with a date here in Mareel.

This Creative Lab will be followed with a Filmmaking: Editing lab in February which will also be delivered by Keiba. Keiba Clubb is a local film maker who also lecturers in film on the NC and Vocational Pathways courses we teach here at Mareel.

Islesburgh Drama Group:

The Crucible “Until an hour before the Devil fell, God thought him beautiful in Heaven.” - Arthur Miller, The Crucible Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witchhunt of 1692 - ‘one of the strangest and most awful chapters in human history’ and the McCarthyism which gripped America in the 1950s. The story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice, culminating in a violent climax, is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations. In this new interpretation of the play, Islesburgh Drama Group reimagines the town of Salem in a familiar landscape of a small island community in 1600s Scotland and explores how the themes are as relevant today as when the play was written over 60 years ago.

This event also celebrates our local writers’ groups, who meet regularly to work on their pieces together. They share ideas, encourage and give critiques, and develop their skills and techniques. Many of these writers have published works in anthologies, or their own collections and novels. Some of the groups have even published Writers’ Group collections. This event gives us the chance to hear new work from these talented local writers.

This summer, Haltadans, Herkja and Freda Leask have all been recording in the studio in Mareel. With new releases due out, here is your chance to see some of the country’s best musicians right on your doorstep. All three musical acts perform at each event.

Shetland Rape Crisis presents

Zero Tolerance: Violence Unseen  Zero Tolerance and award-winning photographer Alicia Bruce have worked with groups and individuals affected by men’s violence to create a series of photographs that explore the types of violence against women that remain unseen and unacknowledged by mainstream society. The photographs shine a light on the types of violence against women that still remain unacceptably hidden and better represent the constellation of women’s lived experiences. Over the past decades there have been dramatic changes to public attitudes around some aspects of men’s violence against women. Yet domestic abuse, sexual violence and other forms of violence against women are still prevalent in Scotland today, especially for groups of women who face other forms of discrimination; women with learning disabilities, women in prostitution, lesbian, bisexual and trans (LBT) and black and minority ethnic women.

Singing Masterclass   Andy Ross is a classically trained singer who has been teaching vocal music for twenty years. This workshop will give you the opportunity to sing in front of a small audience (ten in the session in total) after which Andy will give you techniques, hints and tips on your vocal production, interpretation and breathing. For those who want to learn without singing in front of an audience, there are three observers places available as part of the session. globalyell.org/music

Make More Noise!  Following the success of Make More Noise! 2018, we’re bringing it back again with some of your favourite stars and some new faces. Mareel hosts the ultimate cabaret Christmas party. Book early to avoid disappointment. Buy out a table and get yourself a seat near the action. Cabaret is followed by DJ and dancing till late!

Burlesque Teaser Class With Missy Malone 

Yoga against the Tyranny with Timberlina 

This workshop is a “one off” 1 hour teaser class with international burlesque performer Missy Malone!

Shetland’s favourite Drag Queen Bingo Host presents Yoga against the Tyranny!

This class will introduce you to your inner burlesque goddess! Looking at popular elements of tease such as Posing, Working a Feather Boa, Glove/Stocking Removal and Tassle Twirling. It is a perfect class for beginners and Hen Parties! This is not a burlesque stripping workshop and will not include nudity. The workshop will also include a Q&A with Missy.

It will be a 45-minute yoga session combining yoga, breathing and contemplation to help nullify notions of negativity

Ticket price includes any prop use (Tassles, Gloves and Feather Boas). But if you have your own Tassles/ Gloves/Boa please feel free to bring them along! Please bring: Comfortable Clothing & a pair of heels. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment!

It will consist of a process of Sun Salutation cycles, breathing techniques and relaxation, culminating of course in an obligatory yoga shot. Ticket-holders for Make More Noise receive a 10% discount

AC  DC UK  Fronted by the most authentic Angus Young, and Brian Johnson in the business; AC/DC UK deliver up to a 2-hour powerhouse show, featuring all the AC/DC hits; with a few fan favourites thrown in to boot. AC/DC UK are widely regarded as one of the world’s premier tributes to Australian rock gods AC/DC and play prestigious venues around Europe, including many festivals, where they have even shared stages with legends such as Iron Maiden! Support for the show comes from local rockers Delorean.

Another Great

SCREEN This year Screenplay featured special guests Sanjeev Bhaskar, Jeanie Finlay and Harry Wootliff. During the ten days over 3000 tickets were sold to more than 30 films, plus nearly 1000 pupils from 18 schools attending 16 education film screenings in Mareel and the Mid Yell Hall, and over 250 pupils taking part in workshops. Screenplay attracted praise for its gender balance with half of the feature films in this year’s programme fully or co-directed by women. This year also saw the introduction of a new Screenplay Audience Award. Top five films by popular vote were 1. Sound It Out 2. Children of the Snow Land 3. Capernaum 4. On Her Shoulders 5. Shorts for Wee Ones. Over three quarters of the films in the programme scored an average of at least four out of five!
