Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Bonhoga, The Garrison Theatre & Mareel. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, & dance events. Our vision is for a creative, connected Shetland that values art and culture and the transformative impact it can have on everyone’s life; a Shetland that nurtures and celebrates its own creative talents and is open to all cultures and lifestyles; a Shetland where no one feels isolated and where culture is core to ensuring the economic and social wellbeing of all its residents. Supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082). Registered office: Mareel, Lerwick, ZE1 0WQ
This is such a great time of year to be in Shetland and to be at Shetland Arts. The third iteration of ShetlandMade is underway at Bonhoga with makers working hard to keep up with demand. Mareel has just finished hosting a run of creativity camps for young people where they explored filmmaking, performance and dance. We have hosted a great dance performance featuring Shetlands own Kathryn Spence, along with Inferno Dance Group and The Shetland Community School of Ballet. Fraser Taylors Shadowed Valley Installation is now on display in the upper cafe of Mareel, so if you are taking advantage of our new power points and work area you can be not only inspired by the view but by Fraser’s take on Shetland. It’s a packed month in the Cinema, with more than 30 films including action (The Meg, The Equalizer 2, Upgrade), comedy (The Festival, The Spy Who Dumped Me, The Happytime Murders, BlacKkKlansman, King of Thieves), drama (The Negotiator, The Children Act, The Seagull, Hurricane) and family films (Christopher Robin, Alpha, Luis and the Aliens and, back by popular demand, Incredibles 2). There’s also Teenage Flicks, a new strand of films specially chosen for young adults. If you’re a teenager, you get in for a fiver! The final weekend of Screenplay also falls into this month with special guests Timothy Spall and Nick Parks Q&As already nearly sold out.
BLOOMING YOUTH is going to take over the Flower Park in Lerwick on 15/16 September, as part of the Year of Young People Big Takeover weekend. A spectacle of contemporary art, inspired and created by young people. As part of the Big Takeover Mareel and the Garrison will be hosting an exciting range of events programmed by Young People for Young People and we are extremely grateful for Event Scotland’s support for this fantastic partnership event. The programme for Wordplay 2018 (8-11 November) is having the final touches put to it as I write this introduction and we will be launching the programme during Screenplay. WordCards, which will give you access to the whole festival, are already on sale. Enjoy the sunshine,

I’m With Her
The Lone Bellow
I’m With Her is Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan. An impromptu show in 2014 at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO, sparked the formation of I’m With Her and sent the trio touring the world together the next year. Along the way, I’m With Her formed a special, family-like chemistry, garnering acclaim for their unique blend of instrumental interplay combined with their indelible harmonies, as the New York Times describes, “... that could be sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.” Their debut album, See You Around, was recorded in Box, England, with Ethan Johns at Real World Studios.
Returning to Shetland after an acclaimed sold-out show at Mareel in January 2016, The Lone Bellow burst onto the scene with their self-titled debut in 2013. The Brooklyn-based band quickly became known for their transcendent harmonies, serious musicianship and raucous live performance — a reputation that earned them their rabid fan base. It’s been three years since the band’s victorious Then Came The Morning was released. Produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, the album was nominated for an Americana Music Award.
O’Donovan previously wooed audiences at Shetland Folk Festival with her band Crooked Still, while Jarosz and her trio performed to a sold out Mareel auditorium in January 2017. Watkins, who will visit the islands for the first time, first made her name as fiddler and vocalist with Nickel Creek (also featuring mandolin wizard Chris Thile and Sara’s brother Sean Watkins).
Please note: over 14s only and under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

FRIDAY 21 - THURSDAY 27 SEPTEMBER
Callum Beattie Callum Beattie has been hard at music for almost half his life, making his own chances, taking chances and, for sure, being a chancer. The Edinburgh-born musician has progressed from “mangled” versions of Wonderwall and bad gigs in pubs straight out of Trainspotting, via stage invasions in front of 80,000 REM fans and backstage blags with Kaiser Chiefs, to where he is now: a singer-songwriter with a punchy, rousing, emotive and gloriously catchy debut album that lit up 2017. And lit it up in stereo. 14 years and over, all under 18’s need to be accompanied by a responsible adult

The World is a Wedding, the Presentation of Unst in Everyday Life In 1948, Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman came to Unst, told everyone he was there to study the economy but, instead, studied everyone there. His research ended up in his massive bestseller The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life, changing the game for sociology. Seventy years later, a cast of Shetland youth have teamed up with performance company Mammalian Diving Reflex to apply Goffman’s insights to Unstfest, UK’s most northerly festival. The Presentation of Unst in Everyday Life presents their findings. Let us present a study of you to you, hopefully with a song or two. Bonhoga Gallery is situated in Weisdale Mill, on land cleared for large-scale sheep farming in the 19th Century. It was a meal and barley mill from 1855 until the early 1900’s, then used as a butchery and tannery before falling into dereliction in the middle of the 20th Century. The building was renovated and opened as Bonhoga Gallery in 1994, and since then has been welcoming large numbers of both Shetland residents and visitors to the isles. Bonhoga means ‘my spiritual home’ in Shetland dialect. In the south-facing conservatory overlooking the Weisdale burn, the Mill café is a popular spot all year round. The menu features locally sourced produce and all food is prepared daily on the premises. As well as options for children, the cafe caters for those with special dietary requirements.
