DECLAN O’ROURKE
Friday 25 July Doors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pm Support: Adam Guest & Chloe Robertson Classy contemporary Dublin singer-songwriter Declan O’Rourke is to perform a solo show at Mareel later this year. His honey-deep vocals were previously heard in the isles as part of the 2012 Transatlantic Sessions show. O’Rourke will draw on material from his three solo records, Since Kyabram, Big Bad Beautiful World and Mag Pai Zai. The latter was BBC Radio Scotland’s album of the week. The 37-year-old’s work has been covered by a host of big name artists including Paul Weller, who described the song Galileo (Someone Like You) as “possibly the greatest song written in the last 30 years.” Tickets £16 / £14
For a quarter of a century, the James Taylor Quartet has set the standard for the coolest sounds in funky acid jazz. It was 1986 when the first Quartet coalesced after the demise of psychedelic mod scenesters the Prisoners. The ensuing quarter-century has produced a bulging catalogue of remarkable albums and show-stopping gigs. Along the way, there’ve been chart entries, a MOBO Award nomination for 1998’s ‘Whole Lotta Live,’ and guest appearances by James with everyone from the Pogues and Manic Street Preachers to Tom Jones’ multi-platinum charttopper ‘Reload.’ In a career that has embraced jazz, soul, rock, funk and often tipped its hat to classic detective and action movie soundtracks, the Quartet also delivered their own cinematic moment in 1997, contributing Austin’s Theme for the film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. They are band well past their first quarter-century but still finding new challenges to meet and new peaks to climb. Tickets £15

BATTLEFIELD BAND Wednesday 27 August Doors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pm
Battlefield Band’s seamless fusion of the ancient and contemporary has continually evolved over the decades, confirming their position as vital composers and interpreters at the forefront of a living tradition. Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength and vibrancy of today’s Scottish cultural scene, which indeed they have done much to create and fuel, they have led and been at the forefront of a great revival in Scottish music. Refusing to be limited by fashions, they have mixed the old songs and music with a new self-penned repertoire, all played on a fusion of ancient and modern instruments - bagpipes, fiddle, synthesiser, guitar, flutes, bodhran and accordion. The band’s latest release, Room Enough For All (awarded Album of the Year at the prestigious MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2013), captures the fiery instrumental dynamics, intuitive interplay and understanding between world class musicians, while their plaintive ballads and tales of social history are as powerful and relevant as ever.
