Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 Shican Wu (900940) Sia 18
Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
.A symbol include a trophy, a monument or a word, which refer to its dynamic object throug a formal representation. In addition, its relationship between content and form is immaterial . The diagram, in the contray, did not play a representational role in dynamic object, but represented between the pysical content and concepts on organisational level. It performed depened on the requirement.

Week One
Precedent Analysis
For modelling this bizarred shape in Rhino, I traced the boundary part of the each views, (plane, front, right). After that I modeled the basic shape of Burnham. In image1, the curves produced by projecting the lines in plane view. In image2, te basic shape created through curves provied to get the different angle of Burnham. In the last image, trim the opening space

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture.
Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
A design should not be extreme in its functionality, it could be a suggestion for considering the visual enjoyments of vistor. A good design could use each part of the space to create an appropriate design for people. In this case, I pick up the Zaha hadid’s Burnham Parvillion, which is built for celebrating the big dreams of Daniel Burnham’s visonary Plan of Chicago. It also related to welcome the future with innovative ideas nad technologies. Thus the parvillion should consist with some technologies and creative ideas for meeting the historical value of this parviliion.

Burnham Parvillion. The modelling the Burnham Parvillions is chanllenging in technicial parts and it required more knowleges about how to use Rhino properly. It is cost lost of time in building the angle of boudnary parts and create a “flat“ in the opening space at the top. The relationship between shape and light is also chosen to shwon. Circulation provide the path of how people acting in this parvillion, which provide the primary circulation space for analyzing the relationship betwwen the sunlight and movement. Threshold is the point which physical or pschological reactions occured, which provide clear idea what the parvillion expected or already provided people with the experience. The key concept of the parvillion is abou the culture of Chicago, it built for celebrating the bold plans and big dreams of Daniel Burnham;s visionary plan of Chicago, it also for welcoming the future with inovative ideas and technologies, thus the laser projection is provided inside the parvillion.

Week Two Diagrams
Circulation Diagram Threshold Diagram This Diagram provide various path of visitors inside the Burnham Parvillion, the boudary part of the these path combined and get th primary circulation space, while the change of colors in circulation space represent the different density of people in this area, the darker space is where laser projection provided.
6
It is the point pysical or psychological reaction occured, the experience shall begin in where people in Chicago City head to parvillion, due to the visonary plan of Chicago is enlarged version of Burnham Parvillion. When people outside the parvillion, the contrast of sunlight and shadow provided second experience.
Appendix Process
Firstly, trace the boundary part of the provided pictures
Create a solid ball and using “cage edit“ with bounding box, then we are able to edit the shape of ball according to the pre-edited boundary in seperated views(plane, front, right)
7
Appendix Process
When the shape is done, then we could trim the botton side to create a vert smooth closed surface.
Using “project“ command to project the curves into the surface
8
Appendix Process
Using the built line, we could able to create the angle of burnham parvillion’s surface.
By lifting up a bit lines in the surface, we could able to Use the “sweep 2“ command we could able to create the “flat “ opening space.
9
Finished with adding texture to the surface of the parvillion in V-ray.
