“Each night, when I go to sleep, I die. And the next morning, when I wake up, I am reborn.” - Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
This project aims at resurrecting an unfinished structure in an urban context and transforming it to be a site of identity and attraction. By re-organizing the interior space and ‘opening up’ the existing building shell in both rhetoric and literal senses, the building evolves from a efficiencydriven, isolated, concrete ‘bunker’, to be a differentiated destination with ongoing civic activities and events. With the proposed additional entertainment/recreational center bridging the two individual buildings together and the directed flow between the indoor and the outdoor space, HNA Mall will be a lively paradise for shoppers and merchants as well as an energizing civic center for the general public to gather and rejoice in their daily lives.

ENTERTAINMENT CENTER/RECREATIONAL PLAZA CONCEPT SKETCH
The meandering landscape of the plaza and the undulating roof of the entertainment center flow in harmony within the space between the two individual buildings. The gap that once interrupted the integrity of the site and the traffic flow between the two buildings is therefore bridged, not only in a physical sense, but also in a perceptual one. 02

With an existing total floor area of 4.2 million square feet, Mall of America is the largest fully-integrated mixed use, retail entertainment complex in United States. With a multi-phased expansion plan that extends to 2025, the complex will expand across Lindau Lane to include a new hotel, an additional office tower, various retail anchor and a integrated mall on the first three floors to knit the new programs together with activities and opportunities. By the time the final build out of the expansion is finished, Mall of America will double its floor area to around 8 million square feet and truly become a world class destination for travelers around the globe.
