So you wanna personalize your own clothes, eh? There are two ways you can go about doing that, you can either: a) Master sophisticated graphic design programme just so you can draw out that design you have always wanted on your clothes. OR b) Sketch it out on a piece of paper. Scan. Seriously, image manipulation programmes such as GIMP and Adobe Photoshop do have its usefulness. But if you only want to print your favourite design on your shirt without having to go through the hassle of learning a new skill, drawing it out first on a paper is the best way to go.

The first step would be to draw out the design. For the purpose of this tutorial, we shall be using this tribal design (a tutorial on this sort of tribal design is available in our discussion board):

Remember to always use a pen to draw out the design. A scanner typically has more problems scanning a picture drawn using a pencil. Furthermore a penciled drawing would leave more www.poink.com.my

stains and smears which would pose a challenge later on when we want to color the insides. Scan it.

The digitized drawing should look like this:

Poink recommends that you use GIMP for your image manipulation work. It’s a freeware so you don’t have to fork out big bucks to use it (unless you are thinking of using pirated software, but that would be a grave violation of the copyright law…). And it’s only 16 MB! The download link for this software is available here. http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

If you are happy with the result, so be it. The next logical step would be to import the design onto the clothes. But wait! What if I want to color the insides of the design? Oh I know, I’ll just fill it up with this ‘bucket fill’ tool.

Now that looks downright ugly. Didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to, didn’t it?

The proper way to do it would be to first to sharpen the image using “Unsharp mask first. This would eliminate the porous borders (which are more prevalent in penciled drawings).

Then tune the different parameters in order to obtain a clearer image. Experiment with the values until you are satisfied with the result.

After that, convert the image to indexed colours.

Choose “Use black and white (1 bit) palette”.

You should get a black and white version of the design. Now proceed to fill up the insides with black (use the “bucket fill” tool

for this purpose).

Unfortunately a hand-drawn picture can never be perfect. The image would most likely still be littered with imperfections such as unconnected lines and white spaces here and there. Just patch up the flaws with the “paintbrush”

or “pencil”

tool.

Now switch the color mode back to RGB (red green blue). This would allow us to use all the colors.

You can now fill up the solid image with any colour of your choice. The end product should like this:

Enjoy!
