12 pt Baseline grid was used throughout the book. A 12 pt Baseline grid allows me to lay contents out freely, besides that, it works well with various point sizes of the typefaces used.

Klinic Slab is a contemporary, versatile Slab Serif, it carries both personality and functionality. The curved and rounded edges of this typeface resembles the concept of roundness very well. It has a subtle tone and manner with it. Besides, its variety of 4 weights makes it really flexible to work with.

break & build
A sculptor who is born and raised in London and now live in Bristol, he started to work at Spike Island since 1998. Seamus studied at Canterbury College of Art and St Martin’s School of Art. As an experienced sculptor, his works appear to have been crafted with a passion for oceanic rhythms and sounds. I got in contact with Seamus through my meeting with Howard. Seamus has always been very interested in the landscape architecture and how shapes interact with the urban space. He shared with me on how the shape of influences him during the process of creating his past and current work pieces.

Bell MT is a transitional serif typeface designed in 1788. Since the idea of this book was first inspired by the Chinese culture, I wanted a typeface that expresses a sense of nolstalgia. It is almost like an old storybook. Besides, the sharply serified typeface balances out with the roundness of Klinic Slab. Both work together harmoniously just like a circle.

I wanted to keep the colour palette simple throughout the book, so a combination of red and black was chosen. Red is the primary color for festive celebrations as it has the symbol of prosperity and happiness in the Chinese culture. It is a colour that expresses power and impact too.
To balance out the boldness of red, I used black as the second colour because it is a universal and versatile colour; just like how this book covers all various aspects of the concept of circle. I wanted this design to express a subtle yet impactful tone and manner.
image Illustration
Several illustrations were done for the book, reason for that is because pencil drawing is like going back to basic. I am exploring on topics from scratch and filling it in stories and facts. I wanted the readers to feel more personalised with my drawings like how our childhood storybooks used to. It has this sense of nolstagia that suits the tone really well.

Image Effect: Colour Overlay, Screen C: 0 M: 90 Y: 85 K: 0 Colour overlay was applied so that it ties back with the red colour palette and there is a cohesiveness in the entire book.

I kept all the portrait shots neutral with black and white effect so that the quote beside will stand out and make a statement. Black and white images has always give people a sense of timeless classic.

For images such as artists’ work I remain as it is because that is how it is supposed to be, it is a respect to them. I used some personal photos that was taken few years back to support the content, I have slightly adjusted the overall colour so that it is not so strong that it overtakes the other elements in the book.
