editor's note

We always want. We always demand. We always think we deserve. What we never do is consider if we deserve anything at all. We talk about making it. We talk about getting paid. We tell people what we are going to do and how others have to treat us.

Shinobi Muhammad Editor-in-Chief

"Fashion is our focus. real models is the expectation. The industry as a whole is what we aim to represent. "

We crave the opportunity to be famous, successful and and financially abundant. However, what we fail to realize that all things become as they are earned. In all cases, earning things is not based on our view of what we need to do. Because we are not the ones offering the opportunity. We have to cater our drive to earn our position by the criteria of others we seek to obtain opportunity. What most do not realize is that people will extend opportunities to you when they see what they perceive is what you deserve or have earned. Real opportunity is always that which constrantly progresses you and does not steal away from the value of your character, substance, and purpose.

Though it seems that just doing what people like is easy. It actually is a challenge because as you do others will too for the same opportunities. This forces you to take your game to the next level. It forces you to stand out more than the next person. It forces you demand more from yourself than you would have expected. This is the beautiful part of earning the opportunities you want. You learn things about yourself which in turn make you stronger, wiser and more of a value in the game of getting the things you want out of life. So the next time you think of achieving great tasks in life and obtaining the benefits of opportunities that will give you the joy of achievement. Remember, it’s not what you think you deserve it’s what you EARN.

What’s the Median Income for a Fashion Model in the U.S.? Take a wild guess: How much do you think fashion models make? It’s one of those professions that unless you know someone, or work in the biz, there’s not a lot of information out there to have a good view into. Judging by models’ perceived glamour and high society status, not to mention the cut-throat competition they deal with, you might think it’s a lot. I think I did. Which is why this line from a TNR review of the new book Pricing Beauty: The Making of a Fashion Model struck me as amazing:

The median income across America in 2009 for a model was $27,330—income that includes no benefits. The book is by Ashley Mears, a former fashion model and current Boston University sociologist. From the TNR review, written by Chloe Schama, here are some other insights into the strange world of fashion model economics: •The average magazine shoot pays about $100 a day. For appearing on the cover of Vogue a model gets an additional $300. •Payment for walking in a Fashion Week show in London is $500. •The super sought-after “high-end campaign”—for a fragrance or some other luxury good pays, on average, about $100,000. •The question of what makes a good model is prone to the greatest illogic and shrouded by the most impermeable mystery. A distinct “editorial” look is one that, in Mears’s words sits “on the border between beautiful and ugly.” CLICK LINK BELOW TO PURCHASE BOOK: http://www.amazon.com/Pricing-Beauty-Making-Fashion-Model/dp/0520270762

using fashion trends to boost your model portfolio A boring model is a model who presents a portfolio that does not reflect any aspect of the fashion industry. An investment in your look and style is knowing and exploring fashion inside and out. Especially, those who want to be “high fashion models. How can you feel comfortable presenting your book without a sense of fashion.

Imagine any of these outfits in your next shoot. Seeing how the clothes fit and provide a sleek elegance to the form and personality of each person. (images courtesy of www.fashionbombdaily. com). what will you do?

How can we ask the children to be strong when we frail away in the face of adversity. Pre-occupied with things of material and superficial pleasures. Ignoring the stories behind the reason for the chaos. Voiding ourselves from the responsibility. Distancing ourselves from the stories of our lives that though pained us could be the healing hand for others. We coward behind our past while showing the “FAKE” face of strength. How our lives and our stories our pain and our journies are the well of truth, freedom and spiritual prosperity. The Unveiled Tears campaign is about building from the fragments of others. We are asking for your stories. Your life experiences. Your challenges. All of this so we can INSPIRE, ENCOURAGE AND GIVE INSIGHT to others who are themselves on a rocky road of personal reflection. The unsure, stricken and perceptionally dazed. We need your support to reach out to those to tell their story of abuse. There are no magical words or best of english language to use to ask for your help other than to ask.

WILL YOU HELP US?

What is the Blue Ribbon Campaign? In the spring of 1989, a Virginia grandmother began the Blue Ribbon Campaign as a tribute to her grandson. The 3-year-old died at the hands of his mother’s abusive boyfriend. The Blue Ribbon Campaign is a memorial to children who have been touched by abuse and neglect, and a reminder that everyone has a job to do to prevent the maltreatment of children.

Why is child abuse prevention so important? Child abuse can happen in any home, in any neighborhood, within any family. According to statistics form the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, reporting agencies nationwide received 2.9 million referrals for child abuse and neglect in 2003, and an estimated 1,500 children died from maltreatment. Abused and neglected children do poorly in school, are more likely to become teen parents, and abuse alcohol and drugs. They are more likely to become criminals as adults and to suffer chronic health problems. Most children who are abused bear psychological scars—and in some cases, physical scars—forever.

How did the Blue Ribbons for Kids initiative begin? Blue Ribbons for Kids was originally created to help Wisconsin communities coordinate child abuse prevention initiatives by providing easy to use resources and materials to implement a successful awareness campaign. Since its inception, many organizations outside of Wisconsin have requested materials offered through Blue Ribbons for Kids. Most of the inquiries occurred because these organizations could not find child abuse prevention awareness materials that are comprehensive and easy to use in their own states. This strong response convinced us that organizations across the country are searching for high-quality child abuse prevention materials and we wanted to make our materials available to everyone interested in strengthening families and preventing child abuse. In the beginning of all things we find ourselves finding examples by which to follow. As human beings we are hot wired to study those who came before us. This in essence is the fact regarding Urban Mainstream magazine. Three years ago the magazine and its concept of diversity and individuality all under one roof was not present. Magazine publishing via an online outlet was in many cases something more for major print magazines to explore. Many of those magazines found at that time still did not grasp the understanding of an online publication online. As technology grew and the creative eye of those wanting to bring to life the online world of publications. The seed of thought manifested for Urban Mainstream magazine. A magazine which focused on the fashion, modeling, and entertainment world from a different angle. A magazine with no real motivation to become a print publication but rather a strong publication whereas readers could find things in it similiar to what they were familiar with and then those things that were new to them.

Couture Lingerie Collection In the society like ours everything is possible, even a prostitute becoming a fashion designer. Zahia Dehar who used to render escort services at the young age of 16 has presented a couture lingerie collection during Paris Fashion Week It seems that now to become a ‘designer’ you just have to be famous

for something, no matter what that ‘something’ is. Zahia Dehar, who is French Moroccan by origin, used to be an underage prostitute paid by footballers for her escort services. A few years later, today, she has showcased her lingerie collection at the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.

Zahia Dehar, who was just 16 when several football players who had slept with her were arrested and imprisoned, is now trying to make a reputation of a good and talented girl by designing lingerie. The lingerie line was debuted at Palais Brongniart – the former Paris Stock Exchange and was organized as a colorful show. Zahia Dehar appeared on the runway too, modeling a sheer dress covered with flower petals. The collection was rather diverse and interesting but there was hardly a common idea coming through it. Dehar herself didn’t design the couture lingerie. Outstanding masters including François Tamarin, Bruno Legeron, and Jean-Pierre Ollier did that for her. And photographer for the lookbook was Karl Lagerfeld. Karl commented on Zahia Dehar: She’s very French courtesan, like Liane de Pougy or the Belle Otéro.” source: www.millionlooks.com

TIps For Him: How To Choose Lingerie For Your Beloved source: www.MillionLooks.com

Women often complain that choosing lingerie is a hard task for them. We can only imagine how difficult it is for men to make the right option. And the problem lies not only in the size but in style, color, details and even budget. The tips listed below can be very helpful though. As a woman I can say it is always pleasant to receive lingerie as a present from your beloved. But considering the fact choosing lingerie is not easy even for a woman herself one can imagine how hard it is for a man to make the right option. So, I took my time and made a list of tips a man should keep in mind while shopping for lingerie to please his girlfriend or wife. Make sure you know the size. When it comes to lingerie, size is really everything. Try your best to get her size: check her drawer, look at the size of lingerie she’s wearing now (do it the way she doesn’t notice) or ask her friend or sister to do the research for you. If her size is impossible to figure out, opt for a piece that doesn’t require precise sizing: a babydoll, pajamas or a luxurious kimono. Don’t make radical choices. If your wife or girlfriend likes comfy underwear and you have never seen her in anything sexier than French knickers the chance she will like a skimpy thong is quite insignificant. Think of something she would want to wear. Don’t play it too safe. Of course you want the lingerie to fit her and it is essential she likes your present, but playing it too safe can not be the best option. Go bolder and buy something she will not buy herself. Stay true to her style though. continue on next page 2012 JANUARY URBANMAINSTREAM.com

LINGERIE (CONTINUED) source: www.MillionLooks.com

Don’t limit your options to matching sets only. Try a teddie, babydoll or a sexy nightgown. Your present should be interesting, intricate and totally functional. In case you can afford buying two different styles, do that. Go classic and edgy. Ask for professional help. You can always ask for help from a professional employee in the store you are planning to buy your present. They are trained to assist in situations like yours. Don’t forget to ask for gift wrapping which will make your present even more special. In case you can’t spend much on the present opt for a sexy lingerie accessory or a pair of silk stockings. A lovely suspender belt, a mask or a garter can be a great gift which will spice up your nights. Variety of stockings is huge. You can opt for a simple pair of nude stockings to make your present practical or invest into a pair with back seams, polka dots or any other erotic pattern for her to wear it for you only. Choose lingerie that’s trendy. Most girls follow fashion trends and will hardly wear a piece that’s old-fashioned. She can make an exception to please you though, but you will hardly see her in the lingerie you gave her anywhere else outside your bedroom.

7 SEXIEST TRENDS IN LINGERIE

FASHION

Lingerie is out of fashion, it is everlasting. Unlike outwear it is hidden from people’s eyes, it is women’s secret weapon. While looking at the woman it is hard to define whether a femme fatal or a nice nelly is hidden underneath her clothes. Among all the methods of shopping therapy, purchasing of lingerie is considered to be the most effective way to improve one’s mood and selfworthiness. According to experts nothing else can improve self-perception and private life but beautiful lingerie of high quality with a perfect fit. Choice of certain lingerie pieces reflects our internal perception. We are presenting latest trends in the world of lingerie. Bright colors Fuchsia, turquoise and coral colors are the most actual colors of the season. Little black details add some piquancy. Black and beige This combination of body silk and black lace looks dramatic and a bit vicious. It reminds me of a tattoo on the skin, but much more gracious and beautiful.

Polka Dot print Black polka dot print looks very refined on a modest beige background even with minimum of decorations.

MIX & MATCH Flower prints and vintage boyshorts look touching in mix&match combination. Mix&match- combining lingerie of distinct colors and fractures according to own taste.

7 SEXIEST TRENDS IN

LINGERIE FASHION continued

Beige Retro Corsets in the spirit of grandma’s vintage “grace” and panties with correcting features- a delicate option for fans of classics.

Femme Fatal For those who love hot staff: black satin and translucent net, imitation of skin and extravagant models that are able to add intrigue and sexual touch.

Exotic Prints Nowadays lingerie is moving away from classical plain predatory prints. Today predators’ prints are not used so literally- a bit of blue leopard and turquoise tiger is enough to express playful mood. 48 URBANMAINSTREAM.com JANUARY 2012

weak pictures:weaker portfolio know this business and know yourself 7 THINGS TO IMPROVE YOUR PICS & PORTFOLIO: 1. Stop taking a whole lot of pictures thinking that is going to make you better. Quantity is not the

key. Quality images shot by quality photographers who understand and know the real demands of the industry improves your images.

2. Choose photographers who themselves have demonstrated a high standard of photography. Use

magazine spreads, advertisiments, catalogues, and any major display of commercial, high fashion, lifestyle, editorial, glamour etc images you can find to better understand if that photographer has what is needed for you. 3. Utilize strong makeup artists and hairstylists who’s work is excellent before photoshop. Make sure

they can contour, use coloring and can bring to life a natural to glamour look. Make sure the hair stylist and makeup artist understands what agencies and possible clients look for in the image. 4. Don’t spend all day shooting. If it is a paid shoot then shoot as long as they are paying you. If not

give a timeframe and shoot no more than 2 outfits. Allow for variety in hair, makeup, clothes and scenery. More than 40 final images per look can often indicate a weak photographer. Shooting time for two outfits should never take over 60 minutes. 5. Know the look, posing, and attitude you are to express for every shot. If given directions during

shoot. You will need to focus on the shoot. Not the music or people around you.

6. Excercise by practicing pilates and or yoga to strengthne your core. Drink plenty of water. Take care

of your money maker. Your body and mind is your ticket to success. Treat them well.

7. A bad picture is a bad picture. Don’t accept low grade images. Don’t allow yourself to come half pre-

pared when you are expecting full rewards. If you want to be like the greats then invest in yourself and spend your time, money and energy wisely.

success loves preparation... Nowadays you have everybody with two legs and an eye wanting to be a photographer just like you have people who have no business modeling trying to get in the game. Many of these people have so many high expectations of what should be afforded to them solely because they have decided to do something. Looking for opportunities to be extended and expecting the world to suddenly open up to them. It is my belief that opportunity is never given yet it is earned. People who recognize your due diligence, hard work and progress are often the same ones who will give you what you’ve earned. Earning respect in this business falls on the amount of true effort you put forth to demonstrate your uniqueness, knowledge and professionalism. When models shoot it is very uniquie to find one who not only understands what they want from this business, but one who can properly express the finer points of what it is to be a model. Models who get in this business often will not take the time to research fashion trends. The lack of their knowledge of the industry is often portrayed in their portfolios. I once asked a young lady to bring a “color blocking” outfit. She responded what’s that and if I, a non model, could send her examples. I said “Google it”. Often these aspiring models will expect the photographer to dress them, show them what to wear, do their makeup, do their hair, show them how to pose and so on. While most will not take the initiative to stand their own ground and be that model worthy of the chance to be a success. Models need to take some initiative in building a personal wardrobe. Learning how to thrift store and bargain shop. Learn how to apply different types of makeup. Learn how to style their hair for different occasions and definitely learn how to be more of an asset by improving upon their posing. There is another expectation that they do not have to pay for anything. While, they are expecting value adding services to be provided which are meant to give monetary value to them. It’s like they are being selfish. Taking without giving. Wanting without learning. Expecting without a desire to meet the challenge. I always ask these type of models. What can you offer me? I’ve honed and am improving my skills to provide quality services and consultation. I have value. I bring something to the table. I always often get. I am new or I really have nothing to offer you. My answer. Pay me if you want to earn my respect. Show me what you are willing to invest in yourself. Don’t treat yourself like you are a looking for hand outs. Because if you are not contributing then you are begging. As it is a fact that you can’t go at it all alone and make it in this business. You sure can’t expect everyone who will be a value to your endeavors to give you special treatment. Some will and some will not. Often those who just give you things never condition you to be able to earn things.

Mary Lou, when working with photographers you have to take into consideration the work that is about to be done and how you as a hairstylist benefit from it. Although your work looks beautiful, it’s barely visible. How would someone know to hire you if they can’t see the work in your portfolio? When doing TF’s or any photo shoots, it would be within your best interest to review the concept of the shoot with the photographer before going forward because when you don’t, it’s just a waste of time.

Sweetp Hair, when entering in the entertainment industry as a hairstylist, it is imperative that you show versatility or else this will be a downfall. It’s understood that the photos of your models may not be the best due to the fact that you are new to the industry but the goal is to intrigue the audience that you are attempting to work with and limit yourself to one race or ethnicity.

""report: Scams and Badbusiness KANAKO, the same model, same hair texture, and most of the same styles does not help your portfolio at all. In fact, I thought it was the model’s portfolio! I see more of the model than the hairstyling work. Your portfolio made me very interested in the model and the photographer and less interested in you. It’s all about presentation and versatility. You need to have both in order to make your work pop! Next time you shoot with a photographer, make sure he has at least a little interest in showing your work instead of making another portfolio for Geisha.

MWH, your photography work has shown to be poorly done. This is because models are badly posed, with too much light exposed on some photographs and not enough exposed on others. A photographer should have some idea of what a good pose should look like, in your portfolio it appears no one had a clue. Also do you know how to touch-up a photograph? Models are being negatively represented in your photographs. The work done in your portfolio appears as if an amateur had taken them. It would be greatly appreciated if you worked on your photography skills better or just put down the camera.

Traveling Stylist, your work is beautiful but it is a shame that the models are in the dark and the styles are barely visible. How is this benefiting you? When working with photographers, take into consideration how his/her work can add to your portfolio. Ask the photographer to also take headshots of the models. This would help your portfolio and not just theirs

Donald, as a photographer, your work looks so amateur. The photography of the women looks so sub-par. The posing, styling, hair, and makeup of the models are ridiculously low budget. Many of these women believe they are so close to making it as a model because some photographers fill their heads with high hopes. In most cases it is always “Guys with Cameras” who just take pictures for sport and play while showing themselves off as knowledgeable professionals. It would be wise to learn from other experienced photographers. Your current presentation shows you need advice and better instructions on how to be a more skillful practitioner of photography.

LEARN SOME HISTORY source: www.sidewalksarerunways.com

bRIEF HISTORY OF fASHION The history of fashion or fashion design can be traced back to the starting of the nineteenth century when the dress designs were inspired from the dresses worn in the royal courts. Ultimately, this resulted in opening of a fashion house in the city of Paris, which is considered as the fashion capital of the world by Charles Frederick Worth, who is deemed as the first ever fashion designer in the entire fashion history. People were highly influenced by Charles Frederick Worth’s fashion sense and admired his designs. They labeled the designs as the designs of the ‘House Of Worth.’ As a result of this, the fashion and the designer became synonymous with a specific brand. Paul Poi Ret was also an important designer in the history of fashion who also did a great job and contributed towards the evolution of fashion. He invented a new form of fashion that involved blending of the classical style, aesthetic dressing with the fashion in Paris. To name a few other designers who earned a name for themselves for their contribution to fashion origin were Patou, Vionnet, Fortuny, Lanvin and Chanel. During the entire twentieth century, the city of Paris remained the title of being the fashion capital of the world, along with open aping of the French designs by countries like US and Britain After the World War in the fashion history, there emerged many other countries as being the fashion hubs and this resulted in Paris left as only the influential factor. Later on in this history of fashion, well known fashion designers such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren came into existence and crafted a niche for themselves. Today, fashion is classified into two main categories- the haute couture which is meant for individual customers and the ready-to-wear collection, also known as prêt wear, which is meant for the masses. Thus, we see that how the steady evolution of fashion over the years and it wont be inappropriate to say that fashion has been the by-product of the sincere efforts of many of the top designers.

In the past we’ve talked a lot about what the model should do far as posing, facial expressions and so forth. Now we are going to go into what the model should do in choosing a good makeup artist. Insight in this area is so very key as it is the foundation behind making all things work well for the model, the photographer and all involved. A good makeup artist is first and foremost an “artist”. They should be able to go with the flow and fulfill the demands required to bring forth the best looks possible. Professional, on time, clean, and prepared. Check out the video below to get a Model’s andPhotographer’s feedback on choosing a makeup artist.

A model nowadays has to be real selective in choosing a photographer. Your selection of a photographer is based on what you see in their pictures as it pertains to its quality. What can be some key quality concerns? 1.) Composition 2.) Lighting 3.) Contrast of colors 4.) Clarity of imag A model does not need to be skilled in the art of photography but they should understand what makes a good image. No matter what it is about the creative flow of the person taking the picture. However, it is also about the end product for you. The below video highlights the concept of composition. 1. Do not be a “no-neck monster.” Try to elongate your neck for ma mum extension. 2. Do not pose like a hoochie. (If you don’t what a hoochie is, er, that’s probably best.) 3. Do not be a limp noodle. Always pose with tension in your body completely from H2T (head to toe). 4. Do not play it safe and stay in the same pose. Mix it up with innovative poses, your wildest pose could be the one that’s picked. 5. Do not show up to a photo shoot unless you are clean shaven, have a clean face and clean hair. 6. Do not let hating how your hair or makeup is done affect your performance. Model through it. 7. Do not stare aimlessly when posing. Create intensity for the camera through your eyes. Smize (smile with your eyes)! 8. Do not slouch on the runway; pretend you have a wire through your spine that is pulling you up to the ceiling. 9. Do not be forgettable. Karthy Amarati (Book Publisher) I’m sure we’d both agree model photographers and posing models themselves are paid extremely well – if they’re good at what they do. But what makes the difference between a weekend hack and a super model or photographer to the stars? I’ve pondered this question, as I’m sure you have, for a great while and with all the models and photographers I’ve studied, I’ve invariably come to the same conclusion every time. In short, anyone at the top of their game has invested a great deal of time and energy into studying their craft. With that in mind, I think I might have taken this to the extreme… I’m pretty much a modeling fanatic. The truth is I’m always on the internet looking at anything and everything I can find on modeling and model photography.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably found your fair share of the same – you may not have even realized it was harmful. WALKING IN HEELS

The worse thing in the world to see in a model is one who cannot properly walk in heels. Walking, posing, and having grace in your heels is so important. As a model, you will spend 90% of your time in heels. Those of you who do runway really need to make sure you are properly addressing the issue of walking properly in heels. I want every model to really look at these videos and compare how you walk in your heels. Having grace, poise and elegance in your shoots. Then ladies consider the fact of when you go on networking functions for clients or just for yourself. People are always watching. tERRELL TAYLOR, LLC.

Company Name: Terrell Taylor LLC Owner Name: Terrell Taylor Website: www.terrelltaylor.net Phone: (404)447-9292 Specialty: Swimwear designed for more than just your average Swim

UM: What got you started in the business? AN: Well I’ve always been designing since I could remember. But I recently got started doing Swimwear living out in San Diego, Ca. The weather there was always so nice, and the girls were always at the beach. So just being in that environment day in/day out it just sort of became my focus. And I feel like females are the most beautiful beings on this earth. We come in so many different shapes and sizes and what better way to accentuate the body then with Hot Swimwear…. UM: Define what gives you creative inspiration? AN: My inspiration kind of comes from everywhere. But mostly it comes from myself. I design and create what feels good to me. I’ve always felt that as a designer if you create what comes from you, then others if they like you, and what you do then they’ll love your creations as well. If your not yourself then who are you. And people can tell when your not being yourself…. UM: What’s your business strategy? AN: I feel like if I hit people in their comfort zones then they will love and appreciate my Swimwear much more. I design things that are sexy yet sophisticated, classy yet comfortable. When they put on my suits I want them to feel good and look good. Because as a female if you pin-point those two areas then you can’t help but love you….and that’s all I want is for people to love themselves…in my Swimwear of course…lol UM: What have been some of your learning curves? AN: Wow….everyday I’m hit with something new. What most people probably don’t know about me is that I’m a self taught designer/entrepreneur. I have never had any type of formal training what so ever. But the fact that I’m doing something I love motivates me to keep going, and to keep learning. If you don’t believe in yourself or your own work then how can you expect others to believe in you as well. UM: What are your goals for 2012? AN: For 2012 I just plan on being the best me that I can be. I’m going to keep trying to reach as many people as I can until the whole world knows my name. UM: Why are you presenting your business through Urban Mainstream Magazine? AN: I believe that me showing my work/craft through Urban Mainstream Magazine will help people see the dedication that I have for greatness. My story I feel is one that is relatable and I just want the world to see what I can do. I guarantee that this is not the last that they’ll hear or be seeing from Terrell Taylor. Fashion editorial

written by Shinobi Muhammad

The Faces of Urban m a i n s t r e a m In the coming months, Urban Mainstream magazine will be taking a front seat in its quest to be a positive force and vehicle for models, artists, photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists, fashion designers and all of those who are in the industry seeking a way to express their talents, stories and points of view. We are currently planning more editorial, fashion, commercial shoots and media events where our current and new readers will get a chance to explore these great talents. Our overall goal is to maintain DIVERSITY in our approach. When we say DIVERSITY it is more about the mixture of talents than that of models based on race or ethnic background. We want to expose rising, established and curious talents to each other. Whether you are in Russia, Germany, United Kingdom, Isreal, China, Bogata, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada or the United States. Our mission is to expose your talents. Open up a bridge of exchange. Each issue of the magazine we will further our reach. Seeking out those from around the globe who want to be seen and heard. The FACES OF URBAN MAINSTREAM is all about the cause of the many. We are all at heart driven to explore beyond our own worlds. The reality however is that most do not know how. Connecting our worlds through our crafts is both inspiring and unlimited. Urban Mainstream magazine is about the faces of the MANY. Seeing in each of us that which God has gifted our hands and minds to create. To connect us beyond borders, ideology, race, ethnicity and financial status. As we are inspired we are driven to impact the world around us. It is the lack of inspiration which dulls the senses of society into boredom and decadence. It is the lack of true inspiration which drives us away from our passions as human beings and true creatures of God. We are many yet we are one. In this is the ILLUMINATION OF MIND, BODY AND SOUL.

Lauren Jennings United States/Marietta/Georgia http://www.modelmayhem.com/141130 UM: What got you started in the business? LJ: My friend’s mom is a photographer and asked me to model for her portfolio back when I was in middle school. I have been in love with modeling ever since. UM: What are some of your challenging moments? LJ: I did an outside photo-shoot this past winter while it was raining! It was extremely chilly but it was worth it because the pictures turned out great. Also, I did an event a little while ago where I was on heels for a full 8 hours, no sitting. By the end of the day the blisters were so big that I had to walk on the sides of my feet for the rest of the week! UM: What motivates you to stay in the business? LJ: The people, the clothes, the hair, and make-up keep me in this business. I love being around so many creative people, and getting to wear beautiful clothes and have my hair and make-up done has it’s perks too! UM: Who and or What are some of your inspirations? LJ: I am inspired by pretty much every fashion magazine I pick up. I love to make collages from fashion spreads that catch my eye. I am also inspired by the people that I network with and the personal style that they put into their work. UM: How does it feel to be on the cover of Urban Mainstream magazine? LJ: I am very excited to be on the cover of Urban Mainstream. I can’t wait to see the issue! UM: What are some of your accomplishments you’d like to speak about? LJ: I have had the privilege to model for several local businesses including Veruca, Luna, and Fab’ rik. I have also been on the cover of the Atlanta Bride and Groom Planner and I have been in many independent films around the area, including Love on the Rocks and Strangers with Faces. UM: What do you offer that is unique to the industry? LJ: I think what I have to offer are my unshakable values. I will not let others pressure me into things I do not want to do and I believe that it is very important in this business to have the ability to say no and get out of sticky situations. UM: What are your views concerning Urban Mainstream magazine? LJ: I think this magazine has very helpful information for people in this industry and I love looking at the photographs. UM: Why did you agree to do the interview? LJ: Was not doing it an option? I’m just kidding :). Well, I wanted to let you know a little bit about myself and share some of my experiences.

YOUNG CHILD MODELS AGES 2-12

parentS please read This new section of Urban Mainstream magazine is designed to feature and highlight our young angels. Our children have a special place in all of us. We all want to see them grow and mature and move on to be the leaders, builders and all those things we could only pray the best for. Often the children need something else to give them that special encouragement and insight. Young people need re-enforcement. They need space to grow, improve and expand their horizons. Like with any other art such as music, dance and painting. Modeling can be a positive outlet to teach professionalism, proper etiquette, poise, people skills, positive self imaging and a lot of other fundamental skills. We are now screening, shooting and even developing young people from two age groups. Group one: 2-12 and group two: 13-17. In February we begin training classes, shoots, and other developmental projects designed to hone the modeling skills of young people and then feature their works right here in Urban Mainstream magazine. Our goal by Summer is to have developed a new magazine which will have in it from cover to cover children 2-12 modeling in fashion, lifestyle and commercial shoots. So for now they begin here. Those 13 - 17 will be part of the general magazine via various editorial and features until we develop the Teen version how we feel it should be. That magazine will also be introduced in the summer. Parents will work with us to learn how to build their childs portfolio, avoid scams, and really help their child enjoy the learning and exposure experience. We will expand this section as it will begin at the end of the current Urban Mainstream magazine as a supplement. Initially, starting with 20 to 30 pages and growing till it hits 100 pages at which time we will launch the separate version. Issue 62 the new segment will be installed in its entirety. (late February)

Mike was born and raised on the East Coast in Connecticut, but settled in sunny San Diego in 1998. He began writing music in the mid 90’s, but didn’t start performing until August, 2005. His style has been described in many ways, but if you ask him, he will tell you “I really have no idea. I’ve been influenced by so many different singer/songwriters and bands going back as far as the 60s. I can’t put my finger on it. You tell me!” Let’s just say a little surf / meets folk / meets rock / ...

“We at Urban Mainstream Magazine love Mike’s music. For him to be an unsigned artist just shows how much untapped and under appreciated music is out there. Plus, as an artist he has been very supportive of our magazine and we definitely applaud him and his work.”
