MF “PANORAMA” DRY DOCKED BEFORE HEADING TO GREECE HISTORY The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago recently sold our once popular inter-island ferry MF “Panorama” (built 1987) by Martin Jensen GmbH. to European Navigation, Inc. This ship was lying idle at the port of Port-of-Spain for some five (5) years. This ferry was used to transport passengers, vehicles and cargo between Trinidad and Tobago and was purchased by the former National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR) government for $114 million. The MF “Panorama” was removed from active service in 2004 after it was declared unsafe to transport its maximum capacity of eight hundred passengers. As a mandatory requirement, the classification society Lloyd’s Register, recommended that the new owner dry dock the vessel before heading out to active service. This was undertaken at the CARIDOC ship repair yard at Chaguaramas Bay, North-West Trinidad, before she sailed to Greece, to be used as an inter-island ferry once again. J-MEC Limited (Trinidad) was contacted through their membership in the International Ship Electrical and Engineering Service Association (ISES) and undertook the following on-board contracts works: - Repairs and testing on No.1 and No.2 diesel generators, both electrical and mechanical. - Servicing, testing and re-commission of both the Port and Starboard Shaft generators. Also, the Interface standby generator was converted to function as an emergency generator. - Complete checking and servicing of main and emergency switch board. Complete checking, servicing and re-commissioning of Electro-pneumatic Clutch Control System for No.2 and No.3 Main engines. STX Offshore & Shipbuilding SUCCESSFULLY DELIVERED SUPERLARGE CONTAINER SHIP STX Offshore & Shipbuilding successfully delivered the MSC BERYL, a 13,000TEU class super-large container ship equipped with significantly reinforced environmentally friendly functions, to NIKI, a Greek shipping company, on September 30, 2010.
“MSC BERYL” (built 2010), is a 13,000TEU class super-large container ship.
The “MSC BERYL,” with a deck area as large as 3.5 football fields, can utilize an onshore power supply while in port using its AMP (Alternative Maritime Power) system to minimize unnecessary engine operation for self power generation, thereby reducing exhaust gas emissions. In addition, since the ship can use low sulfur oil with a sulfur content of less than 0.1% as its fuel, it can reduce the emission of sulfur oxide. It also reduced fuel consumption by approximately 2% by applying a high-efficiency rudder that significantly improved steering performance. The “MSC BERYL” with its maximized energy efficiency had its outstanding performance recognized by acquiring the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) certification from

Germanischer Lloyd (GL), the first time a super-large container ship transporting more than 10,000 TEUs has received the certification. It is also very apparent that the ship’s design took into careful consideration the need for a pleasant living environment for the crew. The “MSC BERYL” reduced the vibration level in the crew’s living quarter to 1mm/sec, which was no more than 1/9 of the maximum allowable value, 9mm/sec. This vibration level corresponds to that of a high class cruise ship. It is expected that STX Offshore & Shipbuilding will exhibit greater competitiveness than any other shipbuilder in building environmentally friendly ships by sharing STX Europe’s advanced cruise ship building technology and the capability of building environmentally friendly LNG fueled ships. ************************

MARINE TRAVELIFT'S FIRST 700-TON BOAT HOIST COMPLETES TWO SUCCESSFUL YEARS WITH GRADE ONE MARINE SHIPYARD Marine Travelift Inc. recently announced that its 700-metric-ton mobile boat hoist has completed more than two years of service and is making a significant difference in the business of its owner, Grade One Marine Shipyard Sdn. Bhd. (GOMS) in Lumut, Malaysia.

GOMS is a full-service shipyard, handling ship repairs, emergency repairs, refitting, refurbishment, scheduled maintenance, conversion work and hull, mechanical and electrical work on a routine basis. It’s also a shipbuilder, offering steel and aluminum construction for Anchor Handling Tugs (AHTS), utility vessels, accommodation barges, pipe lay barges, tugboats, patrol boats, crew boats, assault boats and more. A few years ago, GOMS’s management began looking for new lifting equipment that could handle the yard’s diverse business mix — in particular, the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) vessels. To meet the demands of such a special contract, as well as to offer an alternative shipyard facility to RMN and MMEA, the new equipment would have to be able to lift the vessels, each weighing a maximum of 700 tons. “We selected the Marine Travelift 700C mobile boat hoist because it’s the way to keep the shipyard up to date with the latest technology and engineering,” said Tan Kiow, GOMS managing director. “With this lifting method, we know we can lift all types of vessels without defect. We also can maintain the fast turnaround we need.” He observed that the hoist’s manoeuvrability suited the shipyard’s location, which has significant tidal and land limitations. He also noted Marine Travelift’s worldwide reputation for engineering and manufacturing of high-quality machines that are built to last. “We had to consider the low cost of maintenance on a Marine Travelift mobile boat hoist over the long-term life of the machine,” he explained. GOMS ordered the Marine Travelift 700C in August 2006. The mobile boat hoist was delivered on time in April 2008, was assembled by May 3, and started its first operation just two days later. The first RMN vessel, KD Zuhrah, was hoisted on October 8 of that year. Once word got out that the shipyard had a large mobile boat hoist on site, GOMS began lifting everything from government agencies’ vessels, tugs and supply boats to oceangoing cargo ships and megayachts. “They became extremely busy, which hadn’t been in their original business plan!” said Stephan Chayer, Marine Travelift’s managing director of international sales and business development. “That was exciting for them; meanwhile, we were thrilled because our machines handled large cargo vessels even better than we anticipated. That’s opened up new doors for us.” To date, the 700C has lifted 120 vessels, including the RMN vessels. It remains the largest mobile boat hoist Marine Travelift has built featuring 16-wheel electronic steering. This patented all-wheel electronic steering enables each wheel to steer, regardless of how many wheels are on the machine. There are five optional steering modes: front, rear, coordinate, crab and carousel. “This kind of manoeuvrability means you can avoid the old cumbersome ‘S’ turns of the competition,” Chayer explained. “That inspires confidence in hoist operators, and it guarantees that you’ll be able to utilize every square inch of yard space. That’s important for yards like GOMS, which does have some specific constraints in its land area.” CEO Dato' Che Mansor said all parties involved are very pleased with the Marine Travelift 700C’s performance. “The most important thing is the fast upslipping and downslipping, which we can utilize within 24 hours if an emergency arises,” he said. “That kind of turnaround is very important to our operation.” ******************** Page 12 of 30

The U.S. Navy conducted a full power demonstration of a Riverine Command Boat (experimental) (RCB-X) powered by alternative fuel, Oct. 22, at Naval Station Norfolk, Va. Testing and evaluation of alternative fuels from the 49-ft. RCB-X boat supports the Secretary of the Navy's efforts to reduce the fleet's reliance on fossil fuels and is part of a series of progressively complex tests and evaluations scheduled through 2012. These exhibitions will culminate in 2012 with a Green Strike Group of U.S. Navy ships operating locally and by 2016 deploying a Great Green Fleet powered entirely by alternative fuels. "Going green is about combat capability and assuring Navy's mobility. It is not just about natural security; it also strengthens national security. By having reliable and abundant alternate sources of energy, we will no longer be held hostage by any one source of energy, such as petroleum," said Rear Admiral Philip Cullom, Director of the Chief of Naval Operations Energy and Environmental Readiness Division (OPNAV N45), which leads the Navy's Task Force Energy.

"First and foremost, energy conservation extends tactical range of our forces while also preserving precious resources. Our goal, as a Navy, is to be an "early adopter" of new technologies that enhance national security in an environmentally sustainable way," said Cullom. The fuel, a "drop in replacement" to standard shipboard fuel, is 50 percent algae-based and 50 percent NATO F-76 fuel, which forms a 50/50 blend of hydro-processed renewable diesel, also known in industry as "HR-D." Additionally, HR-D, as opposed to biofuel, does not include water which is incompatible for shipboard fuel systems and does not have the limited serviceable life (typically six months) of biofuels. A blended hydro-processed renewable diesel fuel ensures that the integrity of the fuel system is maintained. The Navy is incorporating a systematic approach of evaluating systems, protocols and standard operating procedures. The testing and certification represents a cost-effective approach for the entire engine inventory. The testing and evaluation is being lead by Naval Sea Systems Command's Advanced Fuels program office. ************************

INTERNATIONAL NEWS Royal Caribbean Opens New School in Haiti - Oct 25, 2010 Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., one of Haiti’s largest foreign investors for almost 30 years, today announced the completion of the L’Ecole Nouvelle Royal Caribbean – one of the first schools to be built in Haiti after the earthquake. The strategically located 6,500 square foot school complex is in northern Haiti near nine towns and villages: Labadie, Cormier, Ducroix, Fort Bourgeois, Marchegalles, Cimetiere-Juif, Champ de Mars, Port Francais and Cap Haitien. The campus consists of six buildings, with 12 classrooms, administrative offices, a computer lab and bathrooms. The school will provide children from the area an education, including classes in English and environmental stewardship. In the evenings adults will attend vocational training. “What better way to help Haiti than by educating the children?” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. ”Haiti's needs are enormous, and although we can only be a small part of the solution, we believe our model school is a good start. We hope that these children will develop into leaders who will guide Haiti’s recovery in the future.” The school is on land Royal Caribbean leases from the Haitian government. Royal Caribbean worked with InnoVida and used the company’s Fiber Composite Panels to build the entire school complex in only four weeks, using 50 local Haitian workers, in time for the 2010-2011 school year. All construction materials were transported from Miami onboard Royal Caribbean cruise ships. InnoVida’s structures can sustain hurricane winds, resist earthquakes due to their high deflection capacity, are waterproof and are a highly energy efficient system.
Japanese Ship Orders Nearly Double in September - Oct 25, 2010 Orders for ships received by Japanese exporters increased for the 10th consecutive month in September, surging 96.1 percent compared with the depths of the recession a year ago. In September, Japanese shipbuilders received orders for 30 export ships -- all of them bulk carriers. The 30 ships total 502,793 compensated gross tons. Gross tonnage in September was still 51.9 percent lower than in September 2008, according to figures released by the Japan Ship Exporters' Association. The year-on-year pace of growth in September was also slower than 111.3 percent in August. In the first half of fiscal 2010, which started in April, Japanese export ship orders totalled 6,933,231 gross tons, up 108.6 percent from the same six-month period last year. Japanese shipbuilders have not received any orders for container ships since the beginning of the fiscal year in April. Japan started providing official financial support early this year to shore up slumping vessel exports, through the government-affiliated Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

Gas-fuelled ships conference attracted large audience - Oct 21, 2010 The topic of using gas as a ship fuel attracted a large audience in Hamburg this week, underlining that the maritime industry perceives this technology as one of the most promising to meet future emission and profitability challenges. In his keynote to the conference participants, Dr Pierre C. Sames, GL's Senior Vice President Strategic Research and Development, outlined that gas as ship fuel offers not only large opportunities but that there are also challenges ahead before this technology becomes widely used. "The motivation to consider using gas as ship fuel has become stronger and we are now reaching a phase which requires more focus on the gas-as-fuel supply and bunkering as well as selecting the right gas storage tank size and type," said Dr Sames. The conference addressed all relevant subjects ranging from the economics of using gas as ship fuel, bunkering and gas supply systems onboard, the availability and expected demand of gas as ship fuel, engines, ship concepts for large merchant gas-fuelled vessels and, last but not least, also safety concepts and the upcoming IMO IGF-code. GL experts contributed by presenting on safety consideration for the gas bunkering process and talking about the expected demand from gas-fuelled ships in this decade.
Bangladesh Zone to promote Shipbuilding Exports - Oct 18, 2010 Bangladesh will establish a special shipbuilding zone to promote the export-oriented shipbuilding sector with the aim of earning $5 billion a year from exports by 2015, said officials. The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), which is leading the plan, is now in talks with top shipbuilding entrepreneurs in the country, they said. "We plan to establish a shipbuilding zone to accommodate top exporters on the same premises and help the sector expand by providing more incentives and supports," said EPB Vice Chairman Jalal Ahmed. The shipbuilding and ICT sectors can individually earn up to $5 billion a year from exports, he said, adding that the government should come forward to expedite expansion of the sectors. "Bangladesh economy is now dependent on only traditional export items. It needs diversification to sustain. The shipbuilding and ICT sectors have the potential to diversify our export basket and generate more employment," Ahmed said.

FLEET WEEK BRINGS 1.5 MILLION VISITORS TO SAN FRANCISCO Under clear skies and with calm seas, they came by the hundreds of thousands to San Francisco Fleet Week 2010, the largest such gathering in more than twenty years to take place in the City.

The USS Makin Island -- known as the Navy's "Green Ship" for its revolutionary hybrid technology came to San Francisco early to showcase its disaster relief capabilities. In addition, five more 3rd Fleet United States Navy ships, plus two from the Canadian Navy, the US Coast Guard Cutter Active and two historic vessels of WWII and Vietnam era vintage made up the annual Parade of Ships. Over the three day weekend, an estimated 1.5 million visitors thronged to the City with more than 24,000 going onboard the ships berthed for tours. Throughout the week, federal, state and local officials -- civilian and military -- met and shared best practices and did collaborative trainings on how to prepare for a natural disaster or other emergency -- especially vital in the earthquake prone Bay Area. In addition to the serious content, there were softball tournaments between the Navy, Marines and San Francisco Fire and Police Departments, ten free concerts by the 1st Division Marine Band including a "band challenge" with area high schools and a greatly expanded Fleet Week / Italian Heritage Day Parade and -- of course -- the aerial artistry of the "Blue Angels." "San Francisco rolled out the red carpet for our men and women in uniform," said San Francisco Fleet Week Chairman Major General J. Michael Myatt. "This year's Fleet Week not only introduced our theme of humanitarian assistance and emergency preparedness, but we did what we were asked to do: we brought the Fleet back into Fleet Week. This was the perfect intro to next year's continuation of emergency preparedness and the celebration of the centennial of naval aviation." On January 18, 1911, for the first time in history a plane was launched from the deck of a ship, the USS Pennsylvania, here in the San Francisco Bay. Next year's Fleet Week celebration will be the culmination of that centennial observance. San Francisco and Fleet Week share a long and storied history that originated in 1908 with the arrival of the "Great White Fleet" to the Bay during their round-the-world 14-month-long voyage. Over the years, millions more San Franciscans have welcomed the United States Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard making its Fleet Week one of the City's most treasured traditions. Under the leadership of then Mayor Dianne Feinstein, the modern Fleet Week tradition began in 1981, honoring the dedicated men and women of the Armed Forces and their colleagues. The San Francisco Fleet Week Association is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to honor the dedication to duty and sacrifices of the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and to conduct and offer disaster preparedness training. Its honorary Co-Chairpersons are United States Senator Dianne Feinstein and former Secretary of State George P. Shultz.

WÄRTSILÄ’S TECHNOLOGY POWERS “ALLURE OF THE SEAS” Like sister ship Oasis of the Seas, the Wärtsilä engines installed in Allure of the Seas have common-rail systems, ensuring lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, giving smokeless operation at various engine loads.

“Allure of the Seas,” the sister ship of Oasis of the Seas, was handed over to Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL) by STX Europe’s shipyard in Turku, Finland on October 28, 2010. The 361 meter long ultra modern vessel is powered by six Wärtsilä 46 engines, including three 12cylinder and three 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 46 engines in V-configuration, and Wärtsilä 7500horsepower bow thrusters with a combined power output of some 20 MW that make the vessel easy to manoeuvre. Over the decades, Royal Caribbean International has had several of the world’s most innovative ships in its fleet, and as its partnership with Wärtsilä stretches back 40 years, most of them have been powered by Wärtsilä engines. Just 12 months ago, Oasis of the Seas, the world’s most innovative cruise ship at that time was delivered. “Allure of the Seas is Oasis’ sister ship, with the same propulsion setup, the same thrusters, and the same specifications,” says Fred Danska, Director, Cruise Business at Wärtsilä. Allure of the Seas is 361 metres long, has the gross tonnage of 225,000, has 2700 staterooms, 16 decks and can accommodate about 6400 guests and a crew of 2200. She has 21 swimming pools and whirlpools, 24 restaurants, a floating park with 12,000 plants and more than 2600 theatre seats.

Combined with electronic control, this means that the fuel injection’s timing, profile and duration can all be controlled accurately and even take place in stages, to provide improved low-speed operation, better load control and longer periods between overhauls. Wärtsilä common rail systems also ensure better combustion at all operating speeds and loads, lower fuel consumption, reduced NOx emissions and a reduction in exhaust emissions giving smokeless operation at various engineloads. In engines of older design, it is practically impossible to optimize the fuel injection characteristics for different loads and different fuels.

Solid and long partnership Wärtsilä has long and extensive experience in providing propulsion solutions for the world’s most innovative cruise ships. “What is truly remarkable is the long partnership between Wärtsilä and Royal Caribbean International,” says Danska. “We’ve worked together since the Song of Norway days.” The cruise ship referred to was built at what was then the Wärtsilä shipyard in Helsinki, and delivered to Royal Caribbean in October 1970. Cooperation evolved into an agreement signed between the two companies in 2000. “Our relationship is built on a solid foundation of trust and transparency, the essential prerequisite for a long-term partnership,” says Danska. “We work very hard to truly understand both our customers’ businesses and the needs of their customers. We’ve always done what is needed to be the forerunner in technological development: we were the first to implement common-rail technology in ships, and we are also at the cutting edge with emissionreduction technologies.” As they are sister ships, the good news about Allure of the Seas is that changes to the specifications of the equipment installed on Oasis have not been required. The feedback that Wärtsilä has received about Oasis’ first 12 months in operation has been good. “The experience we have gained from Oasis has been really good, everything has worked fine and the loadings have been optimal for the engines installed on the vessel,” says Danska. Getting it right first time is good news because with only a year between the deliveries of these two gigantic ships, making changes to the installed technologies would have been less than welcome. ************************
